Newsletter (1 December 2022)

Principal's Report

In this newsletter we have endeavoured to cover the important information to finish this year and prepare for 2023. There will continue to be Skoolbag reminders and the current newsletter is always available through the website home page. The school website events calendar allows you to sync items with your smartphone calendar app.

As this newsletter goes live we are still waiting to confirm a new date for the swimming carnival as  we need to have bus transport available. Please keep an eye on your Skoolbag App.

ANNUAL AWARDS PARADE 1-5

The presentation of the annual class awards for Years 1-5 will take place at a special parade next Monday 5 December at 9:00am in the School Hall. This event will also include the awarding of the Champion House Shield for 2022 following reports by the 2022 Sports Captains. Parents/Carers of those students receiving an award have been contacted in Week 9. It is a tradition of Beerwah State School that the students are not notified until the Awards Parade, that they have received one of the awards. The Peachester Road carpark will be open for attendees.

YEAR 6 GRADUATION ACTIVITIES

The Year 6 Graduation will be held in the School Hall on the evening of Tuesday 6 December. The doors will open at 6:00pm for a 6:30pm start. Parents and carers received a booking text earlier this week asking them to indicate how many guests per student would be attending the Graduation evening. There is no capacity limit but this will help us to plan to support social distancing.

The event will include the presentation of Year 6 Subject and Special awards, speeches by 2022 Student Leaders and the screening of the Year 6 Movie.

Students have also received an Autograph folder to collect messages from classmates.

On Wednesday 7 December students have a beach excursion and lunch with their teachers before a special farewell back at school at approximately 2:30pm. Parents/carers of Year 6 students are very welcome to join this farewell which will be on the Flagpole Green.

NOTIFICATION OF 2023 CLASS PLACEMENTS

Students in Prep to Year 5 will take home a note on Tuesday 6 December with the details of their 2023 class name and teacher. Parents of students who are new enrolments for Years 1-6 in 2023 are invited to email admin@beerwahss.eq.edu.au if you have not received class placement details by 9 December.

The following class configuration of 9 classes has been used for 2023 planning. Prep, Year 1, Year 2, 3/2, 4/3,4, 5, 6/5, 6. We have worked very creatively over the last several years to run straight year 6 classes but with class ratios in Years 4-10 being 1 teacher to 28 students we have to work with within our class teacher allocation. The 2023 Year 5-6 staff team will continue to work creatively to maximise Year 6 activities during the year.

Enrolment trends in the school continue to fluctuate as new students arrive and also families transfer for geographic reasons. The class plan is in place until the Day 8 enrolment census in the second week of Term 1 2023. If there are class changes required due to enrolment change, there will be a notification through direct email and the Skoolbag App.

STAFF UPDATE

Details for the new principal for the start of 2023 will be posted to the Skoolbag App when available.  Mr Macneil is taking leave for Semester 1 and will be replaced by Mr Alan Cross, an experienced senior teacher from Talara Primary College. Ms Emma Johnson will be taking further leave in 2023 and Ms Tess McAuley will be continuing as a class teacher for Semester 1.  Mrs Reimann requires continued medical leave and Mrs Melanie Bengtsen (Mrs B) will on staff for the first four weeks of Term 1 in her place.

My best wishes to the school community for a safe and refreshing holiday break.  As I finish as Beerwah SS principal and look at everything that has been achieved on behalf of our students over the last eight years, I would like to thank present and past staff and community members for their input into creating a school where all students get the chance to be the best they can be.

HODC Report

Semester Two report cards are being emailed out on Monday 5 December. Our report cards utilise a ‘learning statement’ for each learning area. These provide an overview of the teaching and learning that has been summatively assessed over Terms Three and Four. These are based on the Australian Curriculum achievement standards (which all children in Queensland schools are assessed against). Each semester we assess different elements of the achievement standards.

The following provides a brief explanation of what each overall judgement (grade) means. These are very brief and generic descriptions. For specific information about your child’s achievement, discuss with the class teacher:

C – on balance, the student demonstrated the achievement standard elements in the learning statement

B – on balance, the student demonstrated the achievement standard elements in different contexts and/or at higher complexity

A - on balance, the student demonstrated the achievement standard elements in different contexts and at higher complexity

D - on balance, the student demonstrated some of the achievement standard elements in the learning statement.

E – on balance, the student required support to demonstrate few achievement standard elements in the learning statement.

MOVEMBER

Miss Melville and 2/1B2 got seriously creative in support if Movember by creating an amazing portrait of students in the class with their own collage moustache. This has been proudly displayed in the office foyer.

To make a donation you can go to this link Beardwah

So far the Beardwah team have raised $645, thank-you to all who have contributed.

REMINDER NOTICES

Our school will be using a new Departmental process for sending reminder notices to parents/carers with overdue invoices. Reminder notices will generate periodically once your invoice becomes overdue.

How you will receive the reminder notice:
  • If you have provided us with an email address and you have overdue invoices, you will start to receive reminder notices directly to your email address
  • If you have not provided us with an email address, reminder notices for any overdue invoices will be posted to you.

ACCOUNT QUERIES

If you are unable to pay your invoices before the due date or have a query about an invoice you have received, it is important that you contact us before the invoice is due for payment.

PAYMENT OPTIONS

Beerwah State School is excited to offer all parents the ability to order and pay for your child’s school items using your smartphone, tablet or computer. The new Qkr! (pronounced ‘quicker’) by MasterCard application is a secure and easy way to make school payments at your convenience. We encourage all parents to use Qkr! as it reduces the need to send cash to school or attend in person, and receipts are automatically generated that can be easily retrieved on the app or sent to your email. It is easier for families and it also significantly streamlines operations with the school.
QKR! How to Guide

QKR! is our preferred method for payment via the secure QKR! App.

  • You Can also pay via the secure BPoint  payment portal in QParents.
  • You can also pay via the BPoint link on the invoice you receive via email
  • Cashless payments can be made at the Payment Window by EFTPOS on Monday, Wednesday & Friday morning between 8:30am-10:30am
  • Students may hand permission & payment to the office in a sealed envelope or snaplock bag.

HOME-SCHOOL COMMUNICATION

Please refer to the Communication Placemat that is available on our website to determine the appropriate method and avenue of communication for any information you require. If you are unsure, please email the school via admin@beerwahss.eq.edu.au and your query will be passed on to the appropriate staff member.

We welcome parents and other members of our diverse community into our school. Working together with the school community, school staff support the learning and wellbeing of every student, and are entitled to a safe work environment. Parents and other visitors to our school support safety by ensuring their communications and conduct at the school and school activities is respectful. Please read our Parent and Community Code of Conduct for more information.

STUDENT MESSAGES AND EARLY COLLECTION

We realise sometimes Parents need to get a message to student/s to change how they are going home, with whom, or need to collect student/s early. We ask Parents, where possible, to please contact the school at their earliest convenience prior to 1:00pm; to advise so messages can go out in rolls and minimise interruptions to class learning time.

Please call prior to arriving to collect student/s so we can have them in the office ready for your arrival. Our break times are 11:00am-11:30am & 1:00pm-1:40pm. We thank you for your support.

CHANGE OF DETAILS

Up to date information helps us look after each of our students. Contact details can be updated through the BSS Skoolbag, QParents app or SZ app. For a hard copy to complete and return, please download from the sidepanel of our school newsletter or website.

Other Reports

Student Services

At Beerwah, the Student Services team meets every second week to discuss how best to support our students’ learning and support needs.  Sometimes students’ needs are identified on enrolment or through our moderation process and other times individual student needs are identified by teachers.

Classroom teachers may discuss student needs with parents and carers and if necessary a referral will be made to the Student Services team.  If this is necessary, a green permission form will be sent home, explaining the process and we encourage you to complete the questionnaire on the rear of the form to help us to understand the needs of your student more clearly.

Our team are currently running an intervention program focussing on supporting students requiring additional support in the areas of phonemic awareness and phonics.

P&C Report

P&C MEETINGS

All P&C meetings have finished for this term and 2022, we shall resume our meetings in 2023. The first meeting will be on Monday 20th February at 6:00pm in the library. It would be wonderful to see some new parents come along and find out what we have in store for 2023. If you can’t join in person, you can always zoom in, just email P&C to get the link: pandc@beerwahss.eq.edu.au.

VOLUNTEERING

A huge thank you to all the volunteers who came to the colour run, I think it’s safe to say all the children had a great time, and so did the volunteers! It was fantastic to have so many enthusiastic parents come along.

Thank you to all the volunteers who have made 2022 a year to remember. I appreciate all the efforts of our wonderful parents, P&C couldn’t operate without you.

As stated on the mid-term P&C newsletter that was sent home, some of our members will be moving on next year so we are looking for new P&C members. Without the parent volunteers, we cannot offer all of the services & events we have been (tuckshop, uniform shop, book club etc). There are lots of little things that are simple to do from home if you can’t come into school. It’s tricky balancing our busy lives but with more helpers, we share the roles to make it easier for everyone. Please get in touch if you are considering joining us.

The P&C Association are an approved volunteer organization with Centrelink (Services Australia) so if you need to complete volunteering hours, the school is a great option. Contact us by email and we can arrange to work out how we can help each other.

FACEBOOK PAGE

If you haven’t already jumped onto our Facebook page, you should. It’s a great place to see what’s coming up, what volunteers are needed & helpful reminders in case you missed the notification.

It’s also the easiest place to get in touch with P&C. Just find our page and like us to start following. BSS P&C Facebook page

EVENTS & FUNDRAISING

Christmas raffle tickets have been sent home with children last week, there are some great prizes, please return sold or unsold to the office by Monday 5th December.

The final meal deal is the Pizza Hut pizza meal deal on 8 Thursday December (Week 10) to coincide with the swimming disco. Orders can be placed on Qkr! which is most convenient. Otherwise, for the final time, we will accept cash to the office. All orders must be in by Monday 5 December as we need to place the order. We cannot accept any late orders. If you are paying by cash to the office, ensure it is the correct amount as change will not be issued.

WORKING BEE

We will resume our working bee’s next year in term one. We plan to hold them every 2nd Saturday of term from 9:00am-12:00pm, so it’s just a small amount of effort for a huge return in our wonderful school grounds and appearance. Isn’t it lovely to wander past native flowering plants as you engage with the school? Our children can learn so much from nature and helping it along with a little effort is a great way to connect with other parents, and great for our own wellbeing by connecting with nature. Come along and try next year! Plus, your children will get recognition for volunteering with a new P&C Volunteer Superstar badge.

RECYCLING PROGRAM

P&C have registered with Terracycle as a collection/drop-off point for various things that normally don’t get recycled. Currently there is a box in the library for the collection of old pens and stationery that no longer works (not pencils). Take a look to see what can be included.

We also have a box for old dental products to get recycled. Sponsored by Colgate, please recycle your old toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, dental floss packets, and electric toothbrush heads. Visit www.terracycle.com.au to find out more. Over time we’ll add more boxes to recycle other products. Items can be dropped off anytime the library is open, boxes are beside the window.

It’s a wonderful initiative to reduce our landfill and look after our environment. As an added bonus, P&C will receive funds as we send off our recycling donations. I encourage you to reduce your landfill and contribute to our recycling program. It makes sense for the planet, sense for the P&C, and sense for your environmental conscience.

 Carolyn Brewer (P&C President)

TUCKSHOP

The Tuckshop will be closed in week 10 so please ensure your child has their lunch with them.

As we move into the new year, we welcome ideas & suggestions from parents & students, please email them to pandc@beerwahss.eq.edu.au. This is also who to contact if you need to change a menu item for your child, as there is no opportunity to add comments in Qkr!

Click here to order online or download the Qkr! app on your mobile device.

UNIFORM SHOP

The Uniform Shop will open each Wednesday afternoon 2:30-3:00pm, or at other times by appointment. The best way to order uniforms is ONLINE via Qkr! It’s quick & easy & there are no transaction fees

Alternatively, an order form can be collected from the Office. Items will then be sent home with the student or can be collected from the Office.

To ensure orders are processed quickly, once you have placed an online order, please send your details to pandc@beerwahss.eq.edu.au

Strategies to support anxious children

Given the ongoing COVID issues/ implications and other stressors on families, it seems timely to share this helpful website from Beyond Blue: https://healthyfamilies.beyondblue.org.au/age-6-12/mental-health-conditions-in-children/anxiety/strategies-to-support-anxious-children

The 10 practical ideas are aimed at children aged 6 to 12 years. Please consider the 9th strategy which involves an interactive, online program for the prevention and treatment of childhood and adolescent anxiety. This free program which was developed at the University of Queensland, has programs for a range of ages and parents: https://brave4you.psy.uq.edu.au/
