Principal's Report

Term 3 has been a very busy term.

It seems that we have had something to rehearse for, get organised  or decorate the school; almost every two weeks.

This highlights that as a school we are  striving to achieve the goals set for Zig Zag Public School. We aim to provide as many learning opportunities for our students and we believe including all our students and involving our parents, carers and the wider community , whenever we can is an important aspect of the learning experience.

In this newsletter I have enlisted the skills of our Year 6 journalists and have asked them to write a snapshot of the many activities we have accomplished this term.

I hope you enjoy their reports and interviews.

Have a safe and restful term 3 holiday.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN tests are designed to provide you, your child and their teachers with information about how your child's learning is progressing.  NAPLAN  is a point in time diagnostic test.

Head Lice

We have  been notified of a number of cases of nits.  Please check your child’s hair for nits/lice tonight using the methods recommended in information from NSW Health (http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/environment/headlice/Pages/treatment.aspx).

If you find any eggs or lice please commence treatment as recommended.

Further information on head lice is available on the NSW Health website (details above) or through the Department’s website at http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/studentsupport/studenthealth/conditions/headlice/index.php.

I appreciate your assistance in this regard.

Attendance

Term 3 has been a bad term for illness for our students. While we encourage children to stay home when they are sick, we also advise that students need to attend school regularly, in order to continue to learn and prevent gaps in their learning.

When your child returns to school, it is a requirement that an explanation is received for your child's absence.

Teachers are now sending home absence slips as our explanation records are not at an acceptable level.

Stephanie Alexander Garden High Tea

On the 14th of September Zig Zag Public School held their annual Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden High Tea.  Year 6 students had the opportunity to become a waitress, a waiter or a kitchen hand.  Year 6 served different sweets, finger food such as cakes, scones and chocolate covered strawberries.  We would like to give a big thank you to the guests who came, all the staff who helped with the High Tea, the donations of cakes and scones  and a huge thank you to Mrs Simpson who organised the whole thing.  Every year we have a different theme.  This year’s theme was pink, sliver and white with fairy lights.  The room looked very elegant.

Term 3 sporting Grant

For the past four Fridays Zig Zag Public School has been coached in playing different sports, such as Gymnastics, Basketball and Hockey.  Interviews from several students reported the following.  Elijah Hatte who went to hockey, loved playing the fun training games.  Claire who went to Gymnastics, loved the beams and bars.  Junior went to Basketball and loved trying to get the ball in the hoop.

Spelling bee

A few weeks ago four lucky students got to go to the regional spelling bee.  There were many hard words for our students to spell correctly.  Our four fantastic students were, Rory, Grace, Eli and Bella.  Here is what some of them had to say.  Rory said that the spelling bee words were very difficult.  She also said it was very cold and she was nervous.  Although it was hard she concluded that it was fun.

Bella stated it was very nerve racking, she was happy to see that there were lots of kids there.  Congratulations to our students who participated in the regional spelling bee!

Yarning Circle

In Term Two our school built the yarning circle.  If you’re wondering what the yarning circle is, it is a place where children can talk about something that’s on their mind or to tell stories.

Uncle Owen was there to tell us the instructions of it because he is Wiradjuri.  He knows all the information about the protocols of yarning circles.

Mrs Simpson was there to make sure it happened and helped us to build it.  We sand papered the logs, laid the beds, filled it with sand and purchased a fire pit.   There were so many contributions from  the community. Thank you everyone.

Eisteddfod

On the eleventh of September Zig Zag Public School attended the Bathurst Eisteddfod.  We performed two songs one was “Higher Ground” and the other song was “Time enough to give.”

From our perspective it was very nerve racking to say the least but was also exciting.  From the Judges point of view “Time enough to give” was a nice ensemble with a sweet sound which we sang with feeling.  In “High Ground” clear diction and good rhythm playing, was the positive comment.  We must thank Mrs Smith for her dedication and great teaching.  Thank for the experience.

The next P&C meeting is on Monday 21st October.

Student of the month

This month we would like to acknowledge two great students of our school.  Angel Adams and Chloe Dray.

Both girls are outstanding students who not only try their best in everything they do, but are also a good influence and are helpful to other students.  Well done girls.
