Principal's Post

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week we celebrate Book Week. Book Week puts a spotlight on authors, illustrators and children's literature.

Reading is such an important skill that opens pathways and opportunities to students. Reading is fundamental to function in today's society.  It is vital in finding a good job, many well-paying jobs require reading as a part of job performance.  Reading develops the mind. The mind is a muscle, it needs exercise. Understanding the written word is one way the mind grows in its ability. Teaching young children to read helps them develop their language, spelling and writing skills.

Reading develops the imagination and creativity.  It also develops good self-image. Non-readers or poor readers often have a low opinion of themselves and their abilities. They can feel isolated and behaviour problems can surface. Students can also perform poorly in other subject areas. There are many other benefits to reading, however, these are just some to name a few. Finally, reading is important because words - spoken and written - are the building blocks of life.

As many of us focus on Book Week as an opportunity to dress up, it is more important to focus on reading with your child or discussing what your child is reading and the benefits that they feel they get from reading.

Are you being a role model by reading in front of your child?

Mrs Nic Williams

Book Week - Reading is My Superpower, what is yours?

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Fabulous effort to our students for displaying the focus behaviour of 'Right Place, Right Time'. They have been supportive and encouraging to their friends by ensuring the play remains in designated areas. Playing and learning in the 'right' areas allows students to be actively supervised and get support from a teacher if required.

Keep on buzzing and following our focus behaviour as we are moving up the hive to the 'Dress Up Day'! Keep remembering our other behaviours of 'Cool Under the COLA' and 'I Choose It, I Use It' so we continue making our school AWESOME!

Keep BUZZING!

The Chickens are Coming

On Monday morning, MCE received a delivery of an incubator and some chicken eggs. We have lots of information to read and follow to ensure that the incubator is doing its job and we will have healthy chicks in 21 days.

MCE AT THE ALBURY LIBRARY

Last Thursday was the first excursion for Term 3 where students attended the ‘Settlement by Land and Water’ exhibition. Janien took us on a tour of all the memorabilia that showed the history of settlement in Albury and surrounds. Audio recordings explained the local names of places spoken in Wiradjuri language. From the origins of the Wiradjuri nation to the contributions made by migrants that came to Australia for a better life, the students saw how our town grew and prospered to become the city it is today.

LEPS Chess Team joins Tournament at Hume Public School

The LEPS chess team participated in the NSW Junior Chess League one day tournament for the Riverina Region (Albury) hosted by Hume Public School. Our students were impeccably behaved always being in the ‘right place at the right time’. They earned dozens of buzz tickets as we focused on quick transitions between playing and break times. I was proud of our students for making friends with other children from a range of schools. During break times, LEPS students included a variety of children in their games exhibiting fairness and respect.

As for the chess, there were a total of 32 teams from as far away as Deniliquin. Our dedicated chess players fought valiantly. This resulted in one team earning 10th place. Their points were only a half mark difference from the three teams in front of them.

The following students represented LEPS in the chess tournament commendably:

Asthon Doyle, Isaac Martin, Isabelle Anstis, Brian Warhurst, Lachlan Morton, Gus Boyer, Lachlan Joyce, Noah Brewster and Camden Kreutzberger. What really impressed me about our teams (and teachers from other schools also commented) is that no matter winning, losing or drawing, our students were always respectful to the other opponents, shaking hands and accepting the results graciously.

A special thank you to our parent volunteers: Danielle Martin and Kylie Semmens. Not only did they transport some of the children to and from the tournament, they were also our cheer squad.

After the tournament, many of the players shared that they had learned new moves and had improved from the previous tournament. In order to maintain this skill, chess club is on every Thursday at recess in the Wellbeing Room or Mrs Brownsea’s room. Old players, new players – all welcome.

Our School Canteen is now using eCanteen

Our school is using the eCanteen online canteen ordering system from Week 4 Term 3 2019.

Place your order at your own convenience prior to 9am and up to a week in advance.

It's really simple, no new logons or passwords to remember - get started now!

eCanteen is an online order processing system for schools. It can be used on any device without the need for installation. It is mobile compatible as a free simple app installed from the website without any need of an app store

The eCanteen online ordering system is designed with parents in mind. Many of its features are designed to make the process of ordering from the canteen convenient and simpler for parents of students. These features include:

  • Simple login - Login with a Facebook, Google or Microsoft Account to cut down on having to remember yet another login. Don’t have one of these, don’t worry it’s easy to sign up to one of these providers for free.

  • Manage your own students.  Your account allows you to create profiles for multiple students across multiple schools (should those schools be using the eCanteen online ordering system). This stores the details of your students and allows you to process orders for one or more children in a single transaction, rather than having to place individual orders for each student.

  • Order up to a week in advance.  Not only does eCanteen allow you to order for multiple students, it also allows for you to place all your orders for the current week. Cut off times are set by your school’s canteen, so please check to make sure you complete your order for a day before the cut off time.

  • Easy, secure payment. All payments are processed by PayPal. PayPal is a trusted payment processing site which gives you security in knowing your details are securely stored, so you don’t have to enter them every time. PayPal allows you to use either a credit card or bank account and keeps a record of all payments made.

Steps for Creating an eCanteen Account and Profiles

Click on the green eCanteen link above

Click on New User

Select either Google, Facebook or Microsoft account to use as a login.

You will then need to sign into your chosen account

Complete the fields to register your account with eCanteen

You will then be asked to create a profile for your student to place an order (this is done by clicking new profile).  An account can contain multiple profiles (eg one profile for each student).

Select Lavington East Public School Canteen and complete the student details - for Lavington East PS we suggest that classroom (eg 1B) is entered into Room Number.

Once this is completed you are now right to place an order by clicking new order.

Some Things To Note When Using eCanteen

  1. Please be advised that due to the significant cost of a refund through PayPal, the school canteen will give all refunds via cash payment or future lunch orders.
  2. If your child would like hot food at recess please note in the comments which hot food items are for recess. Unfortunately there isn't an option to differentiate between lunch and recess for hot food orders.
  3. Please follow the prompts on the website to submit a request for help and it will be sent through to Megan.

Did you know our canteen is run by our School P & C?

Did you know the canteen is registered for 'Work for the Dole'?

Do you have 2 hours to spare per week, month, term?

The canteen needs volunteers and is under 'New Management'. If you could lend a hand, the canteen runs Tuesday to Friday 9am to 2pm. However, we are particularly busy between 10am and 12pm.

Children love to see their family members behind the counter. The best part is that no skills are needed! Mums, Dads, Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles are all welcome! It's also a good opportunity to share ideas for menu items.

If you have previously volunteered, we would love to see you again! Please see the office for a form to update your details.
