Principal's Message

Student Learning Semester 1

This has been a great new approach to involve families in Student Learning in and beyond Semester 1. Our thanks for such a tremendous response by our students and parents. By the end of this week, statements on student learning will be sent home consisting of your input and the goals identified by the student's classroom teacher for the start of semester 2.

New Parent Portal

We are introducing a new parent portal for Semester 2. A letter will soon go home to each family. The portal will firstly be used to purchase upcoming school photos (see dates below). We will be expanding the facilities in the portal gradually. Please set up your account as soon as you receive your letter.

Religious Coordinator's Message

Draft New Curriculum for Religious Education

Religious Education in the Diocese of Parramatta has undergone much change in the last two years. Term 3 2020 marks the next step towards a new curriculum that will replace ‘Sharing Our Story’, the current curriculum that has been in place for over 20 years.

The process of developing a new approach, currently known as the Draft New Curriculum, has been a collaboration with students, parents, teachers, clergy and system leaders. This innovative and ambitious project has led to the development of Learning Cycles (one per term), that apply scripture and tradition in a meaningful way to the contemporary life of young people. This endeavour supports our students to grow in faith and understanding through prayer, reason and action in daily life.

In Term 3, using experiential learning through student inquiry, students in Stages 2 and 3 will engage with one Learning Cycle (unit of work) from the Draft New Curriculum. In preparation for the 2021 implementation, teachers are continuing to participate in extensive theological formation and professional learning.

This is an exciting opportunity for our faith community of Mary Immaculate Primary School to further exclaim our commitment to empowering all our young people to discover a meaningful and flourishing life.

We look forward to sharing this journey with you throughout the term and will keep you updated about opportunities that will extend the learning experience further for students and their families.

Yours in faith,

Mrs. Helen Moore

Religious Education Coordinator

Holiday Maths Fun

CROSS OUT

FOCUS: Addition

An activity for two to four players.

Equipment

Two regular dice, paper and pencil

Each player writes all the numbers from 2 to 12, on a piece of paper. The first player rolls the two dice, adds both numbers together and then crosses out the total on their piece of paper.

For example, the student rolls a two and a three. On this roll, the player may cross out 5 (2 + 3). If the same player rolls 4+1, they skip their turn as they have already crossed out the number 5.

The first player to cross out all the numbers is the winner.

 TAKE 100 FOCUS: Subtraction

Each student begins with 100 points.  In turn, students roll a regular dice and subtract the number from their 100 points. The first player to reach zero is the winner.

Variations

Change the number of points to begin.

The students may roll two regular dice and either add or multiply the numbers together before subtracting from the total.

MULTIPLICATION SNAP!

As a school, we are focussing on developing our students' understanding of Multiplication and Division. Perhaps you could try this game to consolidate and support what we are doing here at school.

The rules of Multiplication Snap are simple...

• Use an ordinary pack of cards

• Distribute the cards equally between two players.

• Each player puts out a card without looking at what it is.

• The first player to give the correct product gets both.

      For example, the correct answer below is 8 × 5 = 40.

The winner is the one with the most cards at the end of the game

Decide before the game starts on the values of these cards.

To being with, we recommend:

o Ace is 1

o Jack is 11

o Queen 12

o King 13

o Joker 20

CHALLENGE:

o Ace is 15

o Joker 100
