Plattsburg Public School Newsletter

February 2023, Term 1 Week 5

Principal's Message

I would like to acknowledge and farewell Mrs Stokes. Mrs Stokes has been a School Learning and Support Officer at Plattsburg PS for almost 2 decades. She has just this year been transferred to Waratah West PS and how lucky are they to have her! A keen gardener, Jodi brought that love into the lives of the students she worked with. Students were shown how to plant, water and wait for food to grow. Skilled in basketball training, time on the courts with Jodi was a favoured student activity and there were plenty of complaints if it didn’t run. Jodi taught sportsmanship, inclusivity and self-respect with that one round orange ball. Supporting learning in the classroom Jodi knew the kids, about their interests and gets results that meant improved reading and recall of number facts. Jodi expected good manners, persistence and teamwork and skillfully corralled students with humour, bargaining and kindness. Jodi made a difference and she will be missed.

The playground in Federal Park

The playground in Federal Park is a great. We have been using it through the week as part of our Federal Park play to encourage kids to use the facilities responsibly and safely. We still have students unaccompanied in the morning and afternoon in the park. Please remind your child to go directly to school and directly home. The school does not supervise the park. Young students have been observed in the morning hearing the school bell then running blindly across the road to get to school.

Don't Forget Your Hat

The days have been extremely warm at Plattsy recently. It is as important as ever to ensure you pack a hat and a water bottle in your child's bag each day.

You can purchase a new school hat through our online uniform shop at Quickcliq.com.au or wear an old favourite from home.

Supporting your K-2 child at home

You can help your Kindergarten child at home by:

  • modelling listening skills by taking turns when speaking with your child and waiting for them to respond,
  • asking your child open-ended questions about their day or surroundings. For example, Tell me about a book you read today. Or How did you make that artwork?
  • gradually building the number of verbal instructions from 1 single direction to 2 directions then up to 3 directions for your child to follow. For example, pack your bag, brush your teeth and put on your shoes.

You can help your Year 1 or 2 child at home by:

  • using and explaining language that describes position such as left/right, near/far, above/below. Play games such as ‘Simon Says’ or design a map to go on a treasure hunt,
  • comparing and discussing different aspects of life around you. For example, what is the same or different about the seasons, movies, books, food, clothes, cars or weather,

  • continuing to support your child to successfully complete 2- and 3-step instructions. For example, make your bed – put on your jacket – turn out the light,

  • introducing more detailed texts to your child, such as beginning chapter books, so they can focus and listen to you read about one topic over a longer period of time. For example, reading one or two chapters per night.

ATTENDANCE- Not turning up makes easy things hard and hard things harder.

What's Been Happening at Plattsy

Youth Liaison Visit

Plattsburg students in Years 3-6 today were presented with Safety Online by officer Cassie Johnston. The presentations provided our kids with very helpful information on being safe online, reporting inappropriate behaviour and identifying safety strategies. Thank you to Cassie Johnston for coming to Plattsburg Public School.

Cultural Room

Our Cultural Room is a hive of activities. The Cultural Room has been open at recess where students partake in activities. This week the girls played card games while listening to the boys practice the didg.

Times Table Challenge

There's a competition brewing between Mr Bryant and Miss Tjarna.

Each week 4/5B and 5/6T have been working on and practicing their times tables. On a Friday the two classes go up against each other in the inaugural Times Table Challenge.

Students face off in a rapid round of time table questions with the class with the last student standing, winning the weeks challenge.

This week saw 5/6T winning their second week in a row. Mr Bryant is confident 4/5B will level out the score over the coming weeks.

Canteen News

Sno Cones

This week we saw Sno Cones return to the menu as a one time special. They were a such huge hit that Mel in the canteen has offered to sell sno cones every TUESDAY until the end of the term.

Sno cones are $2 each and will be sold at recess.

Have you updated your Quickcliq Profile?

Please have a look at your child's Quickcliq profile and update their CLASS and TEACHER. This will help Mel in the canteen get lunches to the correct classrooms and save the confusion when a students lunch is missing from their basket.
