Dear Parents & Carers

Welcome to Term 2, we hope our families enjoyed the break and had a wonderful Easter.

It was lovely to finish off Term 1 with parents/visitors onsite to witness the Stations of the Cross, hopefully we can continue to invite our school community to events throughout the year.

COVID Requirements: With recent changes announced by the Government in relation to COVID isolation rules etc we have provided a letter to all families which outlines the current information in relation to this. If you have any queries after reading this information please give the office a call. A further supply of Rapid Antigen Tests will be sent home to families tomorrow.

Mothers Day Breakfast: Friday 6 May: We are pleased to announce that we are able to run our Mothers Day Breakfast this year, please keep an eye out on Operoo for the invitation over the coming days, a response will be required by Monday 1 May to allow for catering. Please note there is no vaccination requirement to attend this event.

Nude Food Tuesdays: St John's is creating a greater awareness of sustainability in our school community by introducing 'Nude Food Tuesdays’ for the remainder of the year and by providing paper and cardboard recycling boxes in classrooms.

All students, from Foundation to Grade 6, will be learning more about sustainability during STEM classes throughout Term 2.

Our Nude Food Tuesdays aim to encourage families to provide a rubbish free lunch for students at school.

'Nude Food' is food that comes to school without disposable packaging – extra plastic bags, paper bags, wrappings, cling wraps, tetra packs or disposable plastic tubs.

SchoolsTV: Our school is now licensed to have access to SchoolTV,  a new online resource that provides credible and sound information with realistic, practical ongoing support strategies for parents in their endeavour to raise happy, healthy and resilient young people.

Topics are handled sensitively to suit primary aged children and to support families in many different areas of Wellbeing such as; anxiety, cyberbullying, school transitioning, bullying, resilience and blended families, to name a few. A range of well known authors and psychologists, such as Dr Michael Carr-Gregg, have shared their thoughts on some of the topics too.

Links to specifically relevant articles, videos and information, will regularly appear in our school newsletter.

Please follow this link for more information :    SchoolTV

Winter Uniform Term 2: All students are to wear winter uniform during terms 3 & 4, hats are no longer required on the yard. A reminder also that full school uniform is to be worn at all times - please see Uniform Guidelines in the Parent Info section of the Skoolbag App if you are unsure.

OSHC: We are still in the process of finalising OSHC arrangements with our new provider and will inform families as we are able.

Regards

Chris Dortmans, Principal

Junior News

Welcome back Junior Families to Term 2! Hopefully you had a refreshing Easter break and were able to spend lots of quality time together. This Term ought to be another exciting 9 weeks as we look forward to a range of different learning activities!

The big change to our learning this term will be our new Inquiry Unit. Inquiry this Term will cover a range of curriculum topics including Geography, History and Intercultural Understandings. Foundation students will be delving into the question: ‘Where in the World do I Live?’ They will unpack knowledge of their families and hometowns. Grades 1 and 2 students will investigate the question: ‘What do we know about the place in which we live and learn?’. Focussing their learning at the local community level and comparing the past to the present.

We look forward to the exciting learning we will have this Term in Inquiry and some upcoming activities to go with it!

A gentle reminder to return all the reader books that were given out for the holidays. We will return to 2 books each day at your child’s current reading level.

Middle/Senior News

We hope you’ve had a wonderful break and welcome all our senior students back for another term.

The big buzz for the middle school is of course Sovereign Hill Camp which is happening this week! After so many cancelled camps and excursions over the past couple of years it is so exciting to be able to set off and enjoy this learning experience together.

We thank John Camilerri, president of the Koo Wee Rup RSL, for coming to speak to our grade 5 and 6 students about ANZAC Day on Tuesday. We love hearing from John and learning from his vast knowledge base all about this important Australian Day.

We also have a busy tem to look forward to which includes swimming, Sacraments, NAPLAN, Cross Country, Mothers Day breakfast, disco and St John the Baptist Feast Day just to name a few!! We urge you to keep an eye on the dates section of the newsletter to keep on top of everything that’s going on.

Religion

Rejoice, Rejoice for the Season of Easter is still upon us. We stay in this space until the 5th of June (Pentecost Sunday)  to help us reflect and think about the Risen Christ and how the disciples must have been filled with grief as their master/Lord had died. This week we begin the process for First Eucharist students who will be committing to their faith journey for the next 6 weeks. We wish them well and let them know they are supported in this faith community along with their families.
