August 2022, Term 3 Week 4

Principal's Message

Thank you to our amazing families for supporting our Book Week/Education Week celebrations. The kids were very clear on what they were wearing and why. I had encounters with Scooby Doo, Storm Troopers, Little Red Riding Hood, a couple of doctors and even a school teacher. Not to mention Thing 3 (or Mr Henderson) and Rainbow Fish (Miss Ashley and Miss Lauren). Oh, and massive effort from Mrs Moriarty and the delicious Nacho meals!

Our next great day is Father's Day Breakfast. One of my favourite days because it is also a day, we wear our footy jersies. Are there no rugby supporters out there??? I know it will be a sea of Rabbitoh and Rooster jumpers đꤔ.

Please read our shout out for help to cover library books, maybe you can lend a hand. Because of the great support we had for Book Week we have some great new additions to the library.  Plus, please consider, if you have not already, completing our survey.

Illness and the School Community

Illness has continued to impact our teachers, students and their families throughout Winter. This has led health and school authorities to take a very cautious approach to the start of this term. Schools are being encouraged not to plan too many major school events which will bring additional visitors on-site (thus increasing the risk of transmitting illness). Any events that are planned, need to have sensible covid smart measures in place.  Unfortunately we have had to cancel our planned Halloween celebrations to limit major events in Term 4. Thank you to our school community for cooperating with us on this. Please remember the key messages for this term:

a)   If your child is unwell, they should not come to school and undertake a RAT test as a precaution

b)  If your child is a household contact for someone who has Covid-19, they may come to school, but first you must notify the school, they must return a negative RAT test each morning before coming to school (for 7 days) and it is recommended that they wear a mask.

Please see the Department of Education's
Advice for Families for more information on COVID safe measures in schools.

Book Covering Help!

Our library needs some help covering books. Are you available Tuesday mornings at 9am to cover some books in the library? If so, please come to the office in the morning to sign in and then meet at the library.

Head Lice

Look out!! Nits are about! Along with Spring comes head lice.

We have had a number of cases of head lice within the school and are asking that you please do your part to support our school community in preventing the spread of this infestation. Please check your child’s hair this weekend for nits/lice and if you find any nits or lice commence treatment immediately.

To see nits (eggs) and lice in your child’s hair:

• Use a strong light so you can see the nits on the hairs or lice on the scalp

• Use a comb to separate small amounts of hair

• Check the whole head paying particular attention to the area behind the ears and back of the head

• It is essential to REMOVE ALL EGGS by pinching them with your fingernail and pulling them completely off the hair shaft

• Using a hair straightener will also help to kill the eggs.

Treating head lice does not need to be expensive. Treatment with a medicated shampoo is recommended for the first two treatments but the most effective treatment recommended by James Cook University and Westmead Hospital is the “conditioner and comb” treatment, which involves combing conditioner through an infestation and dunking all lice and eggs in hot water to kill them. Store-bought head lice shampoos or white conditioner must be applied to all parts of the hair, ideally with the same precision with which a hairdresser applies colour to hair, doing it in sections and applying it close to the scalp. No head lice product or insecticide currently kills all eggs, but is likely to kill the live lice. The problem is that eggs hatch at various stages of the life cycle and re-infestatlon occurs If retreatment is not performed. Manual removal of all eggs Is the only effective treatment. A complete regime to remove head-lice consists of two to four treatments a week. The first treatment kills the climbers, and the second kills the juvenile lice hatched from the eggs over the intervening week. In all head-lice cases, a second treatment is needed as no head lice treatment kills 100% of the eggs. You must retreat on day 7 with the same head-lice treatment product used previously. Thank you for your cooperation.

Kindergarten Geography

This term in Geography, Students in Kindergarten are learning about people and places in our community. We absolutely loved dressing up and talking about the importance of community workers.

Book Week/Education Week Celebrations

It was another exciting day at Plattsy, celebrating Book/Education Week. It was great to see the students and staff dress as their favourite characters. Miss Amanda captured the day on film for our families that weren't able to join our celebrations in person and we've included a select number of photos for our newsletter and all photos taken can be viewed on our school's website. Students and their families enjoyed a special Meal Deal of Nachos. A huge shout out to Mrs Moriarty for dishing out over 150 serves of Nachos and filling our tummies. We would also like to thank our Plattsy community for joining us today and helping us celebrate our wonderful school.

A big thank you to everyone for making the Book Fair a huge success. It was fantastic to see our students purchase so many books and show such enthusiasm towards reading. Our school community spent a total of $3188.00 during the Book Fair. This money goes to Scholastic. Our school earned $797.00 in Scholastic Rewards to be spent on new books and resources for the school. With all the books we sold, we are able to purchase new resources for the school and classrooms for all students to enjoy. Thank you!

Education Week with 5/6S

5/6S have been learning about natural disasters in science, and were tasked with creating a diagram, written explanation and prototype of an early detection system for a natural disaster of their choice. Each student had a role within their group and worked collaboratively to create impressive inventions that they presented for the class and then put on display in the hall for families to view as part of Education Week. Here are some progress photos of students hard at work on their prototypes.

Junk Sculptures

We had an outstanding amount of entries in this year's Junk Sculpture competition. The judges had a very tough decision as the entries were outstanding.Congratulations to all the winners. Well done to all the students who submitted an entry and we look forward to seeing your amazing creations next year. All photos taken of the junk sculptures can be viewed on our school's website.

P&C Bunnings BBQ Fundraiser

Dear Parents and Carers,

Due to COVID restrictions the last couple of years have been very difficult to fundraise for the P&C which provides essential resources for our school. We are kicking off this year's major fundraiser with a BBQ at Bunnings Wallsend and WE NEED YOU!

We have secured a booking at Bunnings Wallsend on Sunday 28th August and we are going to need as much help as we can get.

Please sign up on the volunteer form in this newsletter or email Kylee Burnett (P&C President) at plattsburgpandcexec@gmail.com

Come along and meet some parents from our community and maybe forge some new friendships.

1 hour time slots are available from 8.00am-4.00pm.  If you would like to volunteer for more than 1 hour please feel free.

Thank you to those families that have donated drinks and sauces for the BBQ. If you aren't able to help on the day, donating supplies to the P&C would be appreciated very much. Hand in any donations to the office.

Thank you!

Plattsburg Public School P&C

Uniform Shop

Keeping the school's uniform shop fully stocked costs approximately $30,000. A lot of stock goes unsold as our families choose to purchase shorts, pants and skorts from cheaper retail stores, eg. Best and Less, Big W, Lowes. This is perfectly fine, as long as the items are maroon, it is sensible to source cheaper alternatives to items available at the school's uniform shop.

Keeping the stock levels required for every item is no longer financially viable and after discussion with the P&C Association, Principal and neighbouring schools we have made the decision to no longer stock non-logo uniform items such as shorts, tracksuit pants and skorts. The school uniform shop will keep supplies of school shirts, hats and jackets.

There are still discontinued items available to purchase for $5 via www.quickcliq.com.au

As of the 1st July, our supplier LW Reid increased their prices and we have no other option that to pass this increase on to our families. From Term 4 our school shirts will increase from $25 to $27 each. Thank you for your support and understanding.
