Salmon Gums Primary

E News - Term 3 Week 10

Principal’s Report

Hello everyone

It is nearly the end of the term. It is timely, as the students (and staff!) are tired after all their hard work and everyone deserves a break.

It is with great pleasure  that I have accepted the appointment as the principal of Salmon Gums PS. I have loved being here this year and I look forward to working with you all over the coming years. Together, we can ensure that the students reach their full potential.

What We Have Been Doing:

Walk about Town

Assembly

Well done to the Junior Room for entertaining us today. It is not easy to get up in front of everyone and a few of the students said they were nervous. Well, you could not tell as they did a fantastic job. Well done.

Merit Certificate winners are: Jarrah Allan, Mitchell Guest, Klancie Allan and Amelia Egel. Well done all of you.

Congratuations to our merit certificate acheivers

Numero

Well done to the 4 students that attended the Numero competition, Charlotte, Jarrah, Oliver and Sophie. They came back with smiles, and all said they had a good time. Thank you for volunteering and doing your personal best. You are excellent representatives of SGPS.

Numero Competition

Excursion

Whilst the 4 students were at Numero the rest of the school went for a walk. We had a few areas we were focusing on for Geography and Science, but visiting the dam and considering the drought was one of them. Miss Jac also showed us the landing strip for the Royal Flying Doctors. All the students were well behaved and showed that they are a credit to the school.

Scaddan and Salmon Gums Interschool Practice

Scaddan came to visit last Friday so that we could practice for the interschool competition. I was impressed by the behaviour of all students and both schools should be proud of their sportsmanship. It was great to see all the children interacting and working together. A special mention must go to Mr Jake for leading a dance session, Miss Jac for warming us up with Tribes activities and Mr Suttar for setting up all the games and making sure we all knew what we were doing!

Interschool Practice

School Council Training

A huge thank you to Jodi Suttar, Anna Allan and Erin Starcevich for joining me at the high school to learn all the ins and outs about the School Council. The training was excellent and gave us all a clearer direction. I appreciated the ladies giving up their day to do the training. It just shows how lucky we are at SGPS to have such supportive parents.

Youth Mental Health

I have mentioned this previously when I went on the training. This is an excellent course as it is all about supporting our young people’s mental health and wellbeing. As we are all learning this is as important as our physical health. Thank you to Mr Suttar and Mrs Doney for taking the time to attend.

Mental Health First Aid

School Survey

Thank you to those of you that have completed the survey so far. I have left it open and I will not close it until the beginning of next term.  Please do have your say if you have the time to complete it. Thank you.

Lovely Learning

We have had several lessons on Cyber-Safety over the last few weeks. I have mentioned this several times, but I cannot over emphasise the importance of safety online. The students in Y1-6 have shown that they are knowledgeable and sensible. They should have all come home with a certificate of completion and I have told them that I will be checking in with you to see if your child showed it to you. I thought it could be an opening for you to ask about what they learnt. The 4 elements of the program we completed were: Device Safety, Privacy Online, Money Online and how to get help if you are bullied, see something you do not like, they have someone trying to contact them that they do not know etc. Excellent participation and engagement from all.

Star Students

A special mention must go to Holly this week. Holly is a quiet achiever and I would describe her as studious and thoughtful. I really like how you want to learn, Holly, and are not afraid to ask questions.

I would also like to mention Thomas, Sophie, Oliver and Klancie. I work with these students, along with Holly, on a Monday and they amaze me weekly with their work ethic. They really are a pleasure to teach.

Faction Token Winners

Charlotte, Thomas, Isobel x 2, Emily x 2, Bella and Amelia.

Excellent to see you displaying the Tribes Agreements so many times, keep it up.

Water Night

This was something that I wanted to do with the students and community this year, in light of the drought we have been suffering. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, I think that it is harder to do, as good hygiene is imperative. Instead I ask you to think about some facts to share with the children to make them think. Evidence shows that our nation’s youth are significantly less water literate and significantly more likely to take tap water for granted.

Research indicated that as many as 55% of Australians agree they are addicted to using their taps, yet only 42% consider tap water to be precious! (They obviously do not live here) I like no. 2 on this list, and I wish my own children would stick with no.1.

Water Saving Actions

63% of Australians agree they could save more water than they do.

  • Keep showers to 4 minutes or less
  • Keep a bucket in the shower to capture water to use on your garden
  • Turn off taps when washing your hands
  • Fix dripping taps
  • Always use a full load with dishwashers and washing machines
  • Fix leaking toilets
  • Reduce flushing at night and if its yellow let it mellow, if its brown flush it down
  •  Share these tips with your family and friends especially the kids

    Student Leaders Report

Jarrah and I went to Perth camp. The camp we stayed at was Point Walter. My favourite part of the camp was going to the SciTech because we got one and a half hours of free time to explore. Jarrah’s favourite part was the high ropes by far because the people were very nice and she made it to the top and back down safely twice.

On Friday the 18th of September Scaddan came to our school to practice for interschool because we are joining schools. Mr Jake came as well to teach us some dance for 30 minutes. I think we all reconnected with Scaddan Primary and it was great.

    Be Sun Smart, every day.

Sun exposure can lead to skin cancer and other forms of skin and eye damage later in life. Remember to Slip! Slop! Slap! Seek! Slide!

Layer sunscreen on thickly 20 minutes before going out into the sun and reapply sunscreen every two hours. Do not rub it in!

There is no such thing as wind burn! Wind may dry your skin but it will not burn it. Remember to Slip! Slop! Slap! Seek! Slide! when the UV Index is 3 or above.
