2022 Term 2 Week 9

Volunteer time

Parents/Grandparents/MPPS Community friends,

We would love to have your help to assist our students in their learning. If you have a spare 30 minutes (or longer!) you could be a MPPS helper. This role would involve listening to individual students read, helping students practise sounds, basic addition and subtraction facts, times tables, etc. If you are free to help any day of the week 9am-9.30am (or longer if you’re willing) we would love your support in providing one-on-one help.

If you are able to support our students in this area, please email the school melrosepk-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au (attention: Mrs O’Neill) with the following details:

  • Parent/Grandparent/MPPS Community friend name

  • Student and class you’re associated with

  • Day/s of the week you’re available to help 9am-9.30am (or timeframe available if you can stay longer)

    Thank you for your support

    Mrs O'Neill

    Learning and Support Coordinator

Uniforms

Wearing school uniform helps Students to build self-confidence and a sense of connection with their community. There are many benefits when the whole school are in uniform. Not only does it look smart, but it creates a sense of equality amongst all. Wearing the correct uniform is an outward sign of pride in and respect for the school.

Recently I have noticed students attending school in the wrong uniform,  jumpers and jackets of many different colours and many students not having a  school hat.

I ask for your help in supporting our school by ensuring that your child wears the correct uniform every day. Any families requiring financial assistance regarding the purchase of the correct uniform, please arrange a meeting with me where all matters will be dealt with sensitively and with the strictest confidentiality.

The Melrose Park Uniform Shop is run by our hardworking parent and community volunteers. The uniform shop is open every Tuesday morning from 8.45 to 9.15M.

You can also purchase your child’s uniform online via the shop and pay through our secure online payment system. Your orders will be collated and handed out to your child each Tuesday. Please see the link to the P & C Uniform Shop below.

We have a very limited supply of second hand items available for purchase. All contributions to the clothing pool of clean school uniforms are gratefully accepted and donations may be left at the school office.

Covid Continues

Melrose Park Public School has been advised that members of the school community have recently tested positive to COVID-19. Reinfections are also being reported.

Students and staff may have had contact with a person who was infectious with COVID-19. While testing and isolation is no longer mandatory for being exposed to someone with COVID-19 in school settings, NSW Health has provided advice on testing and isolation requirements for our school communities following exposure to COVID-19 that should be considered when making decisions for your child and family.

You are reminded that students and staff cannot attend school if they are showing any symptoms of COVID-19. These include fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose, loss of smell/taste, muscle/joint pains, diarrhoea, nausea/vomiting, extreme tiredness, unexplained chest pain or conjunctivitis (eye infection). If symptoms occur at any time, your child should not attend school and should undertake a rapid antigen test. If the rapid antigen test is positive, your child should isolate as someone who has tested positive to COVID19. If you cannot access a rapid antigen test, you can attend a PCR (nose and throat swab) testing clinic.

You must register any positive test on the Service NSW website or Service NSW app so that you can be linked to important health care support and advice. Parents and carers are reminded to please ensure that you select your school name when prompted when registering a positive test for your child. The safety and wellbeing of our students and staff across NSW are paramount at all times. As such, we will continue to ensure that all necessary health advice is closely followed.

KP Reading

This term in Kindergarten a big focus has been on independent reading habits. Students engage in guided reading groups with the teacher and are taught strategies to use when reading independently. It is great to see students building a love of reading.

Partner reading is also being embedded into the classroom. Students actively listen to each other read and are beginning to provide feedback to each other. Last week Kindergarten students had the opportunity to read their decodable texts to their Year 5 buddy.

The Year 5 students demonstrated patience when listening to students read. It was fantastic to see the support they provided to Kindergarten students. Students cannot wait to read to their buddies again!

Public Speaking Showcase

This term our students have been presenting speeches in class as part of the Speaking and Listening strand in English.  All students have been developing skills in writing speeches, considering effective presentation and presenting the speeches to their class. It has been an enjoyable process as students encourage their peers with positive feedback and enjoy  hearing different ideas  in student presentations.

Speeches for students in Years three to six aimed to have multicultural perspective. Two students from each class were chosen to be a part of a  school showcase with a competition for the students in years 3-6. The finalists from the 3-6 competition were chosen to represent our school in the next round of the Multicultural Speaking Competition via video submission.

We congratulate all class finalists and recognise the following school finalists: Mehek – 3R, Bella – 4L, Abby – 6M and Freya – 6M.

Naidoc Week

National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.

As Naidoc Week is celebrated during the school holidays our school will focus on our learning next week before the holidays.
