Letter from the Acting Principal

We had a wonderful morning today welcoming our 2023 Prep children and their families for their first Transition morning.  It is always such a special time on our school calendar to see the joy and wonder on the faces of our new students.  They were excited as they read stories together and met some new friends.  This day is also exciting for our current Preps as they start to feel very grown up as they get closer to being Year 1s.

Transition is such an important part of our school for all children from Prep-Year 6.  As a school we are committed to our mission that will ensure our students flourish both in the time they are students at St John the Baptist and beyond.

We will be Christ centred, where all are valued since we are made in the image and likeness of God.

We will have a focus on Whole Person Formation, where each young person will be a person of competence, conscience and compassion.

We will develop Relationships, where we recognise that the strength of a community is in collaboration and service with and for each other and the wider community.

We are one body of many parts.  1 Corinthians  12:12-27

Swimming Carnival

We are looking forward to our swimming carnival for our Year 3-6 students on Tuesday 25th October at Aquatic Achievers, St Joseph’s College, Ferntree Gully.  The students will participate in events, including individual swimming races, team relays with some fun novelty events to be enjoyed.  All parents, grandparents and supporters are welcome on the day.

Year 3/4      12:30 - 1:30pm

Year 5/6     1:30 - 2:30pm

Working Bee

We have a Working Bee scheduled for 22nd October 1:30 - 4:30.  Once again we are grateful for the time you generously donate to our school.

2023 Class Groupings

As a staff we give significant time and consideration to your child’s class placement each year.  We look at the academic, social and emotional needs of all of the children and work on creating the most positive class groupings to ensure that each child will transition well into their new class and flourish throughout the year.  I am very grateful that for most part our parents trust the staff and the decisions we make for your child’s class placement.  In exceptional circumstances we understand that sometimes families may need to make a class placement request for their child.

If you have a request for your child’s placement next year you will need to place it in writing via email, no later than Tuesday October 18th.

Summer Sports

After a two-year COVID induced break, the SSV Summer Sport Competition was back last Thursday. The Grade 5/6 students, along with Zaylen, Josh and Sam from Grade 4, proudly represented SJB in Basketball, Softball, Cricket and Tennis. Each team experienced the joy that competing can bring, celebrating victories and commiserating losses with one another. A big thank you to the parents and staff who made the day possible by stepping up to score, umpire and coach when needed.

Running Club

Running Club is back for Term 4! Starting tomorrow!

All students are invited to attend Running Club; however, junior students (P - 2) must be accompanied by a parent. All students (P - 6) must bring a completed permission slip (see the attached document) before being allowed to attend any sessions (if you have previously returned a permission slip, there is no need to complete another one). Running Club will set out from the office at 8am, please don't forget to sign in using the book inside the office.

During Running Club, students will use the bike/walk path that leads to Kings Park in Upper Ferntree Gully.  In the case of inclement weather, fitness work and exercises will be held in the school hall.

Parents are welcome to attend if they wish to enjoy a morning walk/run.

I am excited for a fun term of Running Club and hope to see a big turn out each week.

If you have any questions about Running Club please contact Tess Farry.
