Principal`s Report

Leaders induction

Well done to all of our new leaders for 2020. Mrs Arnot organised a whole school assembly and conducted a terrific induction for our student leaders, sports leaders and I-Centre leaders. These positions have all been organised and the children should be very proud on their selections for this year.

The school and sports leaders were organised late last term and the I-Centre (library) positions were organised this term with Mrs Adams taking nominations. They are all terrific opportunities for children and each hold various specific roles across the school.

The inductions were well supported by parents and families with many photos being taken.

We thank the Parents and Citizens organisation for their support with blazers, jackets and shirts as without their tireless support with fundraising we would not have such vibrant looking leaders.

Captains - Mia and Tevita

Vice Captains - Cassidy and Charlie

Prefects - Ziying, Ryan, Ava and Vance

We also met our Sports House Captains and Vice Captains and our iCentre Leaders.

Good luck leaders in your various roles, we are certain you will represent Wyong Public School proudly in 2020!

Swimming carnival 2020

The annual swimming carnival kicked off another year of sport for the school and it was very well attended from students turning 8 years and above. We did need to push the carnival and remind all students that we expect them to attend (whether you compete or not). It is a school day and all children should be able to attend. It is concerning the amount of children who do not attend the carnival and stay home. I can understand students who are not confident swimmers but this does not stop them from attending the day to support their fellow sport house mates.

Thank you to Mr McGuinness and his strong team of organisers who have put on a superb carnival at Wyong pool. We thank the staff and also parent volunteers for their time and management of the day to ensure it is enjoyable and fun for all. We had some wonderful supportive parents and families helping out with the timekeeping which helps to make the event run smoothly.

The carnival is an important one in terms of swimming competitively and also allowing our children to participate in non-competitive events. I am very supportive of all things sport and also wish to stress the importance of children learning to swim (for survival). We as a school support the swimming program each year in term 4 and will do so again this year. Last year we heavily subsidised the learn to swim program and saw increased numbers of students who attended, and we hope that this leads to more children being competent swimmers which means more students competing at our school carnival. We have applied for more spaces for this years learn to swim program in term 4.

All results for the school carnival will be published in the next newsletter.

Refurbishments for this year

During the year we will have a range of refurbishment programs being completed. This will include classrooms and administration areas gaining new carpets ( year 2, 3 and 4 classrooms) as well as the completion of painting in storerooms and wet areas throughout the school.

Last year you may recall that many classrooms were re-painted and these work's have all been completed.

The support classes will receive new toilet facilities including a shower area in Mrs Bourkes wet area which will be a terrific addition and much needed.

We have also added some minor fencing to the boundaries near the carpark to provide more safety for students.

We are also planning to have an upgrade of the student toilets near the canteen and plans are also under way for some of the other student toilets across the school to have some refurbishments completed this year.

It will take some time but they will be completed.

Breakfast Club

We also remind students and parents that breakfast club is now located near the canteen each morning from 8:15 am. Our new out of school hours service (Wesley Mission) is using the SACC centre for this year hence the change in venue for breakfast club.

This is school and community funded and we expect all children who attend to be courteous and respectful of the wonderful volunteers and staff who supervise this program.

National Apology Day Assembly

Last week on the 13th February we held an assembly for the Anniversary of National Apology Day. This day remembers the National Apology delivered by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in 2008, to Australia’s Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander people’s for the injustices of past government policies, particularly to the Stolen Generations. Our students were respectful throughout and our new school leaders did a great job with their first official event for the year.

School Photo Day 2020: Friday 20th March

This year the students will be having their school photos taken by MSP Photography. Notes will go home soon and as a parent, you can then go to the MSP Photography website and order the photos directly.

Scholastic Book Club

We are once again participating in Book Club this year at Wyong Public School. Did you know that children who read at home, or are read to, have a head start on reading success in school.

The iCentre will send home Scholastic Book Club brochures 1 - 2 times per term. There are a selection of books offered for all ages. There are some books that cost as little as $2!

The Book Club LOOP platform for parents allows you to pay for your child’s order by credit card. Your child’s order is then submitted directly to the school and books delivered to your child’s class.

You can order via scholastic.com.au/loop or by using the LOOP app which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. Each order helps earn free books and teaching resources for our library. There is no better way than to encourage reading than to allow children to choose the books they want to read.

Scope IT

The Digital Technologies Enrichment Program, ScopeIT is a fabulous opportunity for our students and costs $60 for 5 weeks worth of weekly tutorials. Creative Kids vouchers for payment are welcome!

Stage 1 Snap On Electronics

In Snap-on Electronics, students are introduced to the world of electronics and circuits in a fun and engaging manner. Students examine a number of components, then draw the circuit before they build it using snap-on style electric equipment. They will be making amazing projects involving lights and sounds. When students are building and investigating these circuits, they learn how the individual components function together to make a system work. This way of thinking and approaching a problem benefits them in science and mathematics.

Stage 2 & 3 Exciting Electronics
In Exciting Electronics students will be working together to draw, build and code working electronic circuits. They will learn how to light up LED's and code them to create their own Vivid light shows, as well as learn how to wire switches, make their own digital display, RGB LED's and potentiometers (similar to a dimmer switch). The course is very hands on and engaging and ends with a wonderful project. The combination of skills developed in this course serves to benefit other school learning areas that involve any system with rules and multiple dependant components, whether that be a science project, a maths equation, or a sentence in English.

Thursdays starting 12/3/2020 - 9/4/2020

K-2 Home Reading

All Kindergarten to Year 2 students have commenced Home Reading for this year. We have introduced many new resources into our Home Reading and would like to see all students remember to return books regularly (even if they haven’t been read). Teachers will remind students each day to return their Home Reading folders. If books aren’t returned teachers will be giving students a Home Reading Red Dojo similar to the Library Red Dojo to remind students to return their books and folders.

Children`s University

Our school will be in partnership with Children’s University Newcastle for 2020. This program is designed to connect children and families to learning opportunities beyond the classroom. Children are given a passport to learning and encouraged to find NEW learning experiences within their local and regional areas. Children work towards logging the learning hours and are able to work through certificate levels based on hours of learning. All children who reach 30 hours for the year will be invited to attend a Graduation Ceremony with their family in term 4.

Find out more via our Facebook page Children's University Australasia (Newcastle)

Important Information

This program will be available for students in Years 2-6 in 2020. Students in Years 2-6 will attend an information session next Thursday the 27th of February and notes will be sent home to those students who are interested.

* Cost: Annual membership $15. Includes passport, CU on campus discovery day, graduation gown hire, graduation ceremony (paid to the school)
