Principal's Report

Year Six Camp

I would like to wish the year six students all the very best for their camp next week.  The students are travelling to Camp Howqua, in the Howqua Valley next Tuesday.  There is a wide range of exciting activities that will stretch the student’s comfort zone and really test their skills and nerves.  They will participate in horse riding, giant water slide, the skills and fitness challenge (including the mud pit), team initiative challenges, high ropes course and the night walk amongst many other fun activities.  This time away together really cements the student bonds and we get to see the students in a different light, as they navigate the week.  Thank you to the teachers for all the planning and preparation that has happened so far in preparation and thank you to our parents who have volunteered to help us out.

Transition Days for 2023

We have four visits planned for our 2023 foundation students over this term.  The student will be coming in in small groups to get to know their teachers and get comfortable with the classroom and out school.  This will culminate on the fourth session with a parent information session.

We also provide our current students with opportunities to step up to the year group above for three mornings across the term as well.  We are currently working on the class structures for 2023 and will then start allocating students to their classes.  We set out to create well balanced classrooms and students will be asked to identify five of their peers who they work well with, and we make sure they have at least one match from those students.

The process is complex and often requires us to find a best fit for class dynamics.  Some of you may wish to put your preference down in writing to me, I cannot guarantee that we can fulfil parent requests for specific classes.  All our teachers are dedicated, and skilled professionals and they have all our student’s best interest at heart.

We encourage you to start to talk to your child about the transition that they will make at the end of the year.  Often supporting the students with this information helps them to prepare mentally for the changes that they experience toward to end of the year as we move into a new school year.  I encourage you to start setting up a positive narrative with your child/ren around change being an opportunity to try new things, meet new people and grow as individuals.  This is a life skill and often how we frame these things with our language and mindset, positive or negative, has a big impact on how we experience things.  Our role as the adults is to help shape our child’s

Sun Smart

With the beginning of the warmer weather we are back into our sun smart terms.  The students must wear a hat outside if they wish to go outside and play.  Please encourage your child to wear their hat.  They will be asked to sit in the rotunda if they do not have a hat during play time.

Kind regards and Sampai jumpa (until next time),

Matt

The Australian Fire Danger System

In September 2022, all jurisdictions across Australia will implement a new fire danger forecasting system, the Australian Fire Danger Rating System (AFDRS).  This will deliver a nationally consistent system for fire danger ratings based on the latest scientific research.

What's changed?

The new Extreme fire danger rating under the AFDRS will cover a broader scope of fire ratings combining the current Severe and Extreme fire danger rating.

In addition, Code Red will now be known as Catastrophic fire danger.

What does that mean for us?

Macedon Primary is classified as a Category 2 school, meaning that we will now relocate in accordance with our pre-approved plan on a day forecast Extreme FDR  for our LGA (Local Government Area).

We will continue to communicate with the school community over the coming months about how the AFDRS change will be applied and how we can support the community through the transition.

COVID update

COVID-19 isolation requirements have changed

The Victorian Government has announced the end of the Pandemic Declaration and associated Pandemic Orders.

The following settings, based on advice from the Department of Health, will apply from 11.59pm Wednesday 12 October 2022.

It is strongly recommended that students:

  • who test positive to COVID-19 stay home and isolate for 5 days
  • should not attend school after 5 days if still symptomatic
  • who are symptomatic but have not tested positive should not attend school
  • advise the school of the COVID-19 positive test result

Where students become symptomatic at school they should:

  • be collected by their parents/carers
  • undergo testing for COVID-19

Reporting positive COVID-19 test results

The Department of Health recommends that a person who tests positive for COVID-19 should inform those with whom they have recently been in contact, including their workplace, schools and household.

Parents and carers will therefore be asked to continue to report positive student COVID-19 cases using the VicED COVID Tool.

COVID-19 vaccination changes

The current mandatory vaccination requirement for staff and visitors, contractors and volunteers working in specialist schools will cease to apply from 11.59pm Wednesday 12 October. COVID-19 vaccination, including booster doses, continues to be strongly recommended for all school staff.

Face masks

Staff and students who wish to wear a face mask should be supported to do so, and schools should continue to make face masks available for staff, students and visitors.

The Department of Health recommends that masks should be worn by a person who is a close contact of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 when leaving home.

Additionally, the Department of Health recommends that masks should be worn by a person who has COVID-19, for at least 7 days after a positive test, when they need to leave home.

Art Update

This week in the Art room we are exploring an amazing Indigenous Art program that Mrs. Tulloch learned at a professional development day earlier this year, at Monash University. The course was taught by a wonderful group of Indigenous artists from Ballarat called Pitcha Makin Fellas. We will hear some of the story of Edward (Uncle Ted) Laxton and view Pitcha Makin Fellas’ beautiful and compelling art, before creating our own printed story boards to represent a special place or celebration from our own individual lives. Importantly, we will learn how to adhere to Indigenous Art Education Conventions in order to respectfully and appropriately explore Indigenous Culture and History without directly emulating or mimicking the sacred art forms of the many language groups of First Nations peoples.

On other matters, URGENTLY NEEDED!!!: Do you have any old white sheets we might use to chop up and dye later in the term? TOP SHEETS ONLY PLEASE. They will be bleached and laundered before chopping into squares for use so no returns on any donations.

Also for use in our exciting Textiles sessions, we are desperately searching for raw sheep’s fleece (undyed) so we can increase the number of students who are able to explore felt making. Nothing with sheep poo still on it please, but we will take anything else, no matter how dusty!

Thanks in advance.

STEM Update

This week Grade 1/2 students learnt about Meteorologists, Weather and Green Screening,  (or Chroma Key if you want to sound smart) and made their own, accurate, weather reports.

They needed to research a part of the world of their choosing, find out about the weather for the week, find an image to represent that location, and then film their weather reports.

We used iMovie on the iPad to combine it all together (and of course, I regaled them all with another "when I was young, we had to do it like this, and it was so much harder" stories)

We will share some of the final reports later, but in the meantime, you can see some of the behind-the-scenes action in this picture.

Well done Jess from 5/6MS in the Herald Sun 10/10/22
