Staffing Update - Congratulations

We are delighted to announce that Mr Davidson has recently won the 5 year tenure as Deputy Principal at Largs Bay. There is a mix of happiness and sadness as we congratulate and farewell Kieran. He leaves a legacy in the areas of our school he lead and developed; our latest Nature Play upgrade and Nature Play Crew being a testament of his positive work. We will farewell Kieran at future celebratory events and wish him all the best in his new role.

Materials and Service Charges 2021

The Governing Council chairperson Jonathan Halliday recently invited families with queries to attend a Governing Council meeting to discuss 2021 fees. Following the meeting the GC would like to clarify some key information to all families.

Are West Lakes Shore School fees comparable with like schools?

Our school fees incorporate a $50 excursion levy. When comparing like-for-like with local SES schools West Lakes Shore School fees are below or equal to schools with a similar Category 6 SES. Other school fees researched were $370, $360 and $400 with all three schools charging additionally for each incursion and excursion throughout the year.

Why is an excursion levy incorporated?

An excursion level is incorporated and covers fees for excursions and incursions, such as Japanese Culture Day, Footsteps and local educational visits that are essential to the curriculum. The excursion charge excludes camps and celebratory end of year events such as cinema or bowling.

Incorporating the fee supports lesser administration time from both families and school.

How does the school support families who have been impacted financially due to COVID?

The Principal - Carol Press, will meet confidentially with any family to discuss any financial implications and work to support families based on their individual contexts. The GC encourages any family who has had significant hardship to contact the school and make a time to chat this through with Carol. We are here to support all our families and work together to ensure equity for every child.

After responding to parent questions the Governing Council moved to accept the 2021 fee of $400 incorporating a $50 excursion charge. Therefore, as outlined in our Education Act, the GC will now poll the parental community. More information about this will be sent to families next week.

Please do not hesitate to contact Carol Press - School Principal if you have any questions.

A big thank you to our exceptional West Lakes Shore teachers - we hope you have a relaxing weekend, knowing the positive difference you make!

A reminder to all families - please let the front office know if your child will not be returning to WLSS in 2021.  We are in the final stages of our Class Placements for 2021 and having this information helps this process.

Have a great weekend

Carol, Helen & Fay

CELEBRATION CORNER

WORLD TEACHERS' DAY 2020

A recent spotlight report highlights the importance of valuing our teachers more than ever! It also indicates that teachers are valued much more than they know; when teachers feel supported there is a strong correlation between positive learning outcomes. “This year has shown us just how agile, committed and dedicated our teachers can be in the face of tremendous stress and upheaval... World Teachers’ Day on the 30th October is the perfect opportunity to show our teachers how much we value them, we support them, and we acknowledge the brilliant work that they do to every day to enhance the learning lives of students” AITSL CEO Mark Grant said.

Each teacher at West Lakes was treated to a yummy cake recess and an individualised framed message of recognition written by students in their class! Read the spotlight report here https://www.aitsl.edu.au/research/spotlight/teaching-a-valued-profession

DISTRICT DAY ATHLETICS

Well done to our District Day Athletics Team.

We came in third for our District Athletics - the first time in 28 years we dropped from first place, but still an absolutely amazing effort.

With athletes absent on the day, our students present stepped up, took on more events and put in their personal best. Congratulations to those that achieved personal best's and placed in events.

A big congratulations to Largs Bay and Westport for achieving second and first places. Watch out Mr Davison West Lakes Shore will be back and raring to go in 2021!

SAPSASA BASKETBALL

Congratulations to our Year 6/7 SAPSASA Boys Basketball team who recently competed in the State Carnival at St Clair.

Our team consisted of:  Brad M, Jai E, Jack W, Kaleb S, Jed R, Lachlan M-B, Jack McK and Angus M.

Playing at St Clair, they won 5 out of 6 games in their pool and came 2nd, narrowly missing out on the 'grand final game'.

A massive thank you to Mr Dixon, Prue May and all the parents that helped and supported us on the day.

VISUAL ARTS CORNER

SALA ART GROUP - 'POTTERING AROUND' CLAY SESSION

The SALA students were recently invited to attend Pottering Around to participate in a clay team building session. Working together in  groups of 4, they recreated an object, person or thing out of clay using a photo as a reference point........but there was a catch!

  • Student 1 could see, speak but not touch the clay
  • Student 2 could only use their left hand and couldn't speak
  • Student 3 could only use their right hand and couldnt speak
  • Student 4 could use both hands, speak but was blindfolded!

The students encountered  many challenges with this task but it proved to be lots of fun!

Many thanks to Louise McGowan from Pottering Around for facilitating this workshop for us!
