Principal's Message

There’s been lots happening around our school in the past few weeks. Thank you to all the parents who came along to our class information sessions on Wednesday night. It was great to once again see such high attendance levels to this event. A big thank you also to our wonderful staff; those who put such thought and effort into their presentations, those who stayed to support and especially those who came in on their days off to be part of the information sessions.

From a sporting perspective, we had the always popular surfing lessons start last week as well as a new initiative, Little Athletics sessions, starting today after school. These sessions will run for a 4-week period on Friday afternoons. Two Little Athletics coaches will be organising the afternoons along with our Physical Education specialist, Mr Aaron Bacci. Mr Bacci has also organised and will run some touch rugby sessions later in the year. All of these initiatives have been partially or completely subsidised by a Sporting Schools grant that was successfully applied for by Mr Bacci and Mr Dorozenko at the end of last year. I would like to thank them both for their efforts in this space.

You will have noticed that Monday fitness has now moved to Tuesday mornings. Starting next week, we hope to reinvigorate this session by setting a community goal: Can we ‘run to Tokyo’ before the Olympics start in July? We will be counting the laps completed during these Tuesday morning sessions and putting them into the distance required to get to Tokyo. You will be able to monitor our progress on the display that will be put up in the undercover area over the next week or so.

As always, if you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to contact me by phone, email (sarah.dawson@education.wa.edu.au) or in person.

Basketball Court Update

As you will be aware, the work on the basketball court is still in progress. The newly laid asphalt requires 3-4 weeks to settle properly. After that time period a green acrylic coating will be applied to the surface and then once that has set lines will be marked. We are well on track to have the work complete in time to use the new court for our winter sports next term!

Attendance Focus – Holidays during school time.

Developing the habit of going to school every day is vitally important so your child does not miss out on important ideas and skills they need for future learning. That is why we strongly encourage you not to go on family holidays during school time.

While it can be tempting to take advantage of discount offers for accommodation and flights, we strongly encourage you to organise holidays during school holiday periods to make sure your child doesn’t miss out on school.

We do understand that at times, particularly for the large proportion of our community with family overseas, in-term travel may be hard to avoid. If this is the case please contact me via email, Sarah.Dawson@education.wa.edu.au to let me know about your travel plans. I will then be able to tell you what learning your child would be missing out on as well as what their general attendance levels are for your consideration.

Schools can record absences due to holidays using the ‘K – unauthorised holiday’ or ‘V – authorised holiday’ lesson attendance codes. The principal has the authority to determine which code is most applicable for each circumstance. As a general rule at Scarborough PS, if you have emailed me about your plans AND your child’s attendance is generally above the acceptable level of 90%, we will mark your absence as a V. If not, it will be marked as a K.

Please note, there is no requirement within the School Education Act 1999 or School Education Regulations 2000 for teachers to provide a work package.
