Principal's Message

Back to the Future

Welcome to Week 5. Last week was unfortunately another disrupted week for several of our classes. For a variety of reasons, legitimate and necessary staff absences impacted KH, 3W and 3/4M particularly. Whenever there is a change of routine or teacher absence which lasts for more than a day or two, we do our utmost to provide continuity for classes by employing the same casual teacher for those classes - so that routine is maintained, and the disruption is minimised. At the moment, this is becoming almost impossible to achieve. We simply cannot secure casuals for longer periods than 3 days. If your child is in a class that has recently had a variety of casuals teach them, or they have been split for a day because we couldn’t find a casual to cover the class, I sincerely apologise that our usual process has not been able to have been maintained. Please be assured that we are mindful of the impact that this has and continually monitor these classes to ensure that learning and student wellbeing is prioritised. We keep looking for the light at the end of the tunnel and trust that things will get better and back on track soon. For now, I thank all of our families for the ongoing support and understanding that you show when we are not quite able to meet the high standards, we set for ourselves.

Uniform update

Following the letter sent to parents at the end of Term 2, I can report that Expression of Interest forms have now been sent to all manufacturers that have previously inquired with respect to our uniform review. Manufacturers will have just over 2 weeks to submit their presentation to the uniform committee. These presentations will form the basis for the uniform committee to determine our preferred supplier. The early signs are positive with a number of companies that chose not to submit a tender the first time, willing to put their best foot forward through the EOI process. I look forward to working with the uniform committee to evaluate the submissions very soon.

Out of Uniform – Pyjama Day

One of the most frequent requests that I receive from students when I chat with them in the playground is ‘Can we please have an out of uniform pyjama day?’. There is something that really excites them about wearing their pyjamas to school and it always seems to be most appealing in the winter months. I love the idea and have agreed to do this on Tuesday this week (16 August). The students are invited to wear their pyjamas to school on Tuesday, this may include Ugg boots, slippers and dressing gowns. Please ensure that your child is dressed warmly enough and choose appropriate pyjamas to protect their modesty. Sometimes we plan out of uniform days as part of the SRC’s charity fundraising efforts, however this one is ‘Just because…………….they always ask so nicely!’ (And it’s lots of fun)

Have a great week.

Newcastle City Council – Water Safety Talks

Tomorrow we are privileged to have the Newcastle City Council lifeguards visit our school to present to ALL students the City of Newcastle Water Safety Education Program.

Each year, lifeguards visit over 50 local schools to deliver key messages about safety and drowning prevention. The program seeks to interactively educate children about water safety and covers water safety at the beach, at the pool and around open bodies of water such as rivers, lakes and dams. By actively engaging children and empowering them with the knowledge to keep them safe, they hope to prevent child drownings, accidents and minimise children getting into dangerous situations.

Both beach and pool lifeguards present the program at local schools during winter, in an attempt to ensure the safety of their patrons leading into the City's popular spring and summer swimming seasons. The Water Safety Education Program is free to schools in the Newcastle LGA. It would be great to ask your children around the dinner table on Tuesday night – What were some of the important lessons you learned?

Assembly this week

Our next assembly to be held this Thursday (18 August) will be led by 5/6N. During this assembly students will be presented with ribbons from our recent Athletics Carnival and awards presented to Junior and Senior Athletics Champions.

Parents are invited to attend. If you are attending, please be prepared to check-in with the QR Code provided and to wear a mask.

We look forward to seeing you then.

Premier's Reading Challenge 2022

The Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) will end this Friday, 19th August.

Students from Years 3-6 are required to enter their books online themselves, then bring the completed form (with parent signature) to the library by that date.

If students need assistance, they can come to the library at 2nd half lunch this week.

K-2 children have already completed the challenge at school and their PRC books have been entered online for them.

Year One Phonics Screening Check

All Year One students will participate in a Phonics Screening Check during this week with their class teacher.  Phonics is the relationship between letters and sounds and is vital in learning to read.  Some children struggle with learning to read so it is important that these children are identified quickly so teachers can plan for any specific support that they need.

This check generally takes just a couple of minutes and is carefully designed not to be stressful for students however if students are struggling their teacher will stop the check.  Students will be asked to read 40 words aloud to their classroom teacher. These words include 20 real words and 20 nonsense words.  Nonsense words are included  to see if students are able to use their knowledge of blending to read a word rather than their memory of having seen that word before.

Should you require any further information please contact your child's classroom teacher via the school office.

Stage 3 Bathurst Excursion

Our Stage 3 excursion is fast approaching, and staff are working closely with our tour provider on final arrangements.

To assist staff in accommodating your child's needs during this excursion, we are requesting that all notes including permission, medical and dietary requirements, code of conduct and movie consent are returned as soon as possible. To assist families, the school office will send additional copies of notes home with students on Tuesday 16th August.

Classroom teachers will contact families to arrange a meeting in the coming weeks to discuss students’ medical or dietary requirements to ensure they are effectively supported whilst on the excursion.

Please remember payments must be finalised by Friday 23 September (last day of this term). Students will not be permitted to participate in the excursion unless full payment has been made by this date OR alternative arrangements have been made with Mr Holland.

Kindergarten 2023

Emails were sent to all families who have enrolled their children for Kindergarten next year with details of our Orientation Program. We are currently putting the final touches on the program but are pleased to advise the following dates have been scheduled.

Thursday 3 November9:30 am - 10:45 am or 11:30 am - 12:45 pm
Thursday 17 November9:30 am - 10:45 am or 11:30 am - 12:45 pm
Thursday 1 December9:30 am - 10:45 am or 11:30 am - 12:45 pm

The aim of the program is to give children an early understanding of the school’s routines and its physical layout and for students to become comfortable within the school environment and meet some friends with whom they will be attending school in 2023.

If you or a friend/neighbour have a child starting school next year, now is the time to ensure we have their details so we can share important information with them regarding our Orientation program and how to finalise their enrolment.

Children that are household contacts of positive Covid cases

Please remember that if a member of your household tests positive to Covid-19, household contacts are not required to self-isolate for 7 days as they were previously. If your child has no symptoms and tests negative using a RAT in the morning (each day for 5 days) they may attend school. You must still notify us in this instance (a call to the office is sufficient). Additional RAT testing kits will be delivered to schools shortly. As soon as they are received, we will send them home with students to support this new process of being a household contact.
