Principal's Report

Tuesday 22nd February 2022

Hello Everyone,

I hope that you have all had a good week.

Thank you to everyone who came to the Welcome BBQ on Friday night. Luckily the weather was kind. I hope that everyone enjoyed themselves. Thanks to Geordie Taylor and his team for organising this night.

As per my message last week, I will be sending out daily COVID updates only if we have a positive case in the school, or there is important information that you need to know. Please assume that I have no cases to report if I do not post a daily update.

This week we have our school swimming team going to Sunbury Aquatic Centre on Wednesday for the District Sports. We wish them lots of fun and success.

This week we are also starting our lunchtime activity program. We have had a few staff absences and it has been difficult to get it up and running but hopefully we will have all sessions running this week. We will be focusing on students who have anxiety, are a little unsettled or who are struggling out in the school yard at lunch time.

Today I will declare that we have three vacancies on our School Council this year. Each year one half of the SC positions become vacant. I would like to thank Phil Krajewski, Luke Jackson, and Brad Ellul for their work over the past two years. I have included all of the information for you in the School Council section of the newsletter. Nomination forms are available at the front office. Please think about joining our school council.

At last weeks School Council meeting, the Kiss and Drop Zone at the front of the school was discussed. Concerns have been raised by SC about the safety aspects of it. Whilst the morning drop off seems to work well, the afternoon (where all the students exit at the same time) is often busy and chaotic. It has been reported to me (and I have witnessed firsthand), cars speeding into the parking zone and braking sharply; children moving on to the road to enter the car through the right hand passenger door, children standing behind cars to put their bags in the boot whilst another car is moving in behind them; children running along the grass verge, unsupervised by their parents; cars performing U-turns from the zone, across double lines. Please consider the safety of our children when using this zone.

This week the school will undergo a COVID Safe OH&S audit to check that our current practices are helping to keep the school safe.

Please keep in touch if you would like to talk to me about anything.

Kind regards

Trish

Kimochis at MMPS

Dear Families,

Welcome to a new and exciting school year!

This year, we are implementing a new character education and social-emotional learning (SEL) program that teaches children positive habits to lead happy and successful lives. This new program uses Kimochis… Toys with Feelings Inside®.

Kimochi means “feelings” in Japanese, and the Curriculum is based on research that tells us that a strong social-emotional learning foundation is essential to academic and life success. Research also shows that teaching social-emotional skills in school increases academic test scores by 11%!

In our school/classroom, we will be using the Kimochis® characters, feelings, and lessons from the Kimochis® Feel Guide: Teacher’s Edition to teach character education along with our regular academic curriculum. We refer to these important life skills as the “fourth R”—not just reading, writing, and arithmetic, but also relationships.

The lessons in the Kimochis® SEL Curriculum teach real-life skills, such as communication, self-management, decision-making, problem-solving, resilience, and responsibility. These are the skills that help us all become successful in life and in school. When children learn to communicate their feelings effectively, they build confidence, self-esteem, and strong relationships.

Once a week, you may receive a letter (School-to-Home Connection) that outlines what your child was taught and how you can reinforce and extend the learning at home.

Ask your children about what they learned in their Kimochis® lessons when they come home from school. Talk to them about their feelings and plan family time to practice communication skills and  expressing emotions appropriately.

I am very EXCITED and HOPEFUL about building a strong school-to-home connection.

I also hope Kimochis® will be a great new addition to your family and bring fun and fantastic feelings into your home!

District Swimming

The District Swimming event is being held tomorrow at the Sunbury Aquatic Centre. We have 10 students from Grade 4, 5 and 6 who qualified to compete. We wish them the very best of luck, and hope they enjoy the day!

MMPS Swimming Carnival

The MMPS Swimming Carnival was held over a week ago at the Woodend Outdoor Swimming Pool, and what a great day it was for our students. We were blessed with good weather, and everyone was in good spirits and excited to compete in their events. We are very proud of the efforts of all of the students, and commend them on their swimming skills. Below are some more great photos of the day captured by our very talented school photographer Darcy.

This week in Art

This week in Art the students were creating some very detailed drawings using lines. This technique teaches students how line can define a form, create a structure, traces a contour and shows light and shape. It also helps lead the viewers eye from one part of a work to another. As you can see from below, the Grade 1 students created some beautiful line drawings. Good work everyone!

From the Office

Just a quick note to remind parents if you are dropping your child late to school, please present via the school office and sign your child in as a late arrival. This really helps staff and teachers keep track of attendance, and helps avoid any disruption to the start of class. We appreciate your cooperation.

Hats in Term 1

Just a reminder to ensure that students have their hats to wear at school during recess and lunchtimes, as well as any other outdoor activities they may be participating in. It is important that we are all being sun smart and ensuring our children are protected from the harmful UV light that is at its highest peak during the months of mid August to April, where UV index levels regularly reach 3 or above. Please also remember to name your children's hats as they quite often are lost, misplaced or left in the playground and it is handy to know who the hats belong to! Spotted on the grounds were three of our Grade 6 students all wearing their hats during an outdoor lesson.

Music Lessons 2022

Music will resume for 2022. Our music lessons are run by Shaun Evans from Ranges Music Network. Please email: shaun@rangesmusic.net if you are interested in music lessons for your children. This year, the music lessons will be held mostly on Wednesdays and cater for all levels, classes and instruments.

Guitar Lessons

Aaron Moar has been teaching guitar students at Mount Macedon Primary School for the last 7 years. He is keen to meet some new students for 2022 who are interested in learning how to play. Aaron is a qualified teacher, and has been teaching guitar for over 15 years. He conducts group lessons at the school on Tuesdays, and teaches students of all levels and classes. His lessons are fun and interactive, where the students learn to play both modern and traditional tunes to practise their skills and technique. If you would like to enquire about guitar lessons for your child, please contact Aaron on 0438 177 764 or email: aaronmoar@infinitesound.com.au or see flyer below.
