Dear Parents & Community Members,

Our “new” School Board met for the first time on Monday evening.  We welcomed new members to the Board and elected new members to official positions. I sincerely thank the Board in advance for their efforts towards supporting our school.  The current structure of the Board is as follows:

·      Caroline Goldie (Chair)

·      Stewart Lillico (staff)

·      Matthew Morgan (Secretary)

·      Megan Richards (new- staff)

·      Laren Collen (new – parent)

·      Jacinta Stephens (staff)

·      Urszula Helac (parent)

·      Peter Meston (Principal – ex-officio)

·      Hannah James (new – parent)·      Gail Kimpton (community)

The meeting on Monday was largely devoted to discussing the Business Plan and in particular documents that closely align, i.e., Operational Plans and Phase of Learning Targets.  While early in the year, the Board also viewed the school’s comparative budget ready for further, in-depth discussion at subsequent meetings.  The Annual Report for 2022 was also endorsed and is attached with this Newsletter for community perusal.

Our Chaplain, Obang, will be finishing at our school as of the end of term.  We have certainly enjoyed having Obang at Glengarry, hearing his stories and sharing his experiences.  We wish Obang all the very best with his future ventures.

HARMONY DAY @ GPS

The “official” date of Harmony Day was last week on March 21.  Given the events taking place at the time (including NAPLAN) we decided to reschedule the date to next Thursday, i.e., the last day of the term. On this day, everyone is encouraged to wear orange and participate in a number of activities on the day.

Why orange?  Traditionally, the colour orange is associated with social communication and stimulating two-way conversations.  A warm and inviting colour, it motivates people to think and have a meaningful talk!  This is a day we celebrate our cultural diversity and recognise that everyone should be included in all aspects of society. Everyone belongs.

ANZAC Service 2023

The service will be held on Wednesday April 26th at 2:00pm in the school undercover area.

* Students who belong to uniformed organisations such as Brownies, Guides, Cubs and Scouts are invited to wear their uniform.  They will be seated with their class.

* If students have been given medals by relatives, protocol decrees that they are worn on the right breast.

* Hats (except for uniformed groups) are not to be worn as the service is under cover.

* If parents wish to attend this event, please ensure you arrive prior to the start time.

Student Accounts - Credit

Thank you to all the parents and carers for settling the balance on their child's/children's accounts.

Some student accounts have a credit, unfortunately not recorded on the recently issued statements.  The school is not permitted to apply the credit to upcoming events without the authorisation of the parent or carer.

Please contact the school office, on 9378 5678 or email glengarry.ps@education.wa.edu.au,  if you would like the credit applied to an incursion / excursion / voluntary contribution, or if you are unsure if there is a credit on your child's account.

Minecraft Club

On Thursdays in Term 2, Miss Cole will be facilitating the Education Minecraft Club for students in Years 4 and 5 who bring their own iPad to school.  These sessions will be held in the library at lunch times after students have eaten.

Students have the opportunity to sign up for this club by putting their name down in the front office.  There will be a limit of 20 students for these sessions initially, with the possibility of opening the club to more students in the future.  To participate in this club students will need to have their ‘good standing’ and will need to follow library rules while using that space.

In this club, students will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with their peers to complete challenges and build landscapes. Minecraft Education prepares students for the future, building future-ready skills like creativity, problem solving, and systems thinking, and nurturing a passion for play.

Staff Car Park

We are still finding parents parking in both staff car parks as well as using them as a drop off zone for their children or as a thoroughfare.

Please note that the Staff Car Parks are for staff parking only and is not to be used under any circumstance by parents or carers.

Parking or walking through the Staff Car Park is actively discouraged even if parents/carers are walking with children – this is not modelling appropriate road sense.  Please pass this message onto friends or relatives who may be dropping off or collecting your child/children.

Synergy Solar Challenge

This term in Science, Rooms 9 and 10 have been learning about and building solar cars.  On Tuesday 21st March, Aayan P, Lola F, Jesse G and Bailey R represented Glengarry Primary School in the Synergy Schools Solar Challenge Race Day held at St Marks Anglican Community School.

All teams had 40 minutes to build a solar car using the same equipment. To make the fastest car, they had to consider the best solar panel position, gears and wheel size.  These pupils showed great sportsmanship, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork.  The students had a terrific day and gained a lot of knowledge about solar power despite the fact that we were unable to advance to the next round of the competition.

Health and Hygiene

Is your child feeling unwell?

If your child is unwell with cold and flu symptoms, please keep them at home and consider checking in with your GP if symptoms don't resolve

Healthy WA also recommends seeking a COVID test for cold and flu symptoms.  See links below for more info.

Department of Health LINK

DoE LINK

As directed by our guidelines, we will ask for your child to be collected if they are displaying cold symptoms such as a cough, runny nose, fever etc.

We have a student at school who is immunocompromised.  This means they can potentially become gravely ill even when contracting a common cold/virus.  Please be mindful of sending students to school when they are unwell, as they may spread their infection.  Please speak with your GP/health professional and see the information in the links above re: advice about keeping your child at home when unwell.

Canteen - MONDAY and WEDNESDAY

Do you love the thought of not having to prepare lunches on a Monday?

Good news… Starting Term 2, our canteen services will be available on a Wednesday as well.

We would love more volunteers to join our team.  If you are available on a Monday or a Wednesday between 11:30 and 12:30 please contact Dianne Byers on 0409 993 748.

Distributing lunches to the classes is super easy and your kids will love seeing you help out at the school.

The much anticipated Blokes and Kids Camp Out has been locked in for Saturday, 29th April - the first weekend of Term 2.  The booking form went home with students this week, and they can be dropped off at the school office by next Wednesday, April 5th.

A big thank you to our hard-working P&C Volunteers for organising this community event.
