Quality education for all, in a secure and caring environment

ISSUE 4: Term 1, Week 7 - Monday, 6 March 2023

From the Principal's desk

On Tuesday, 28 February, I had the opportunity to accompany the students in Years 1-6 on the excursion to Albury to visit the Flying Fruit Fly Circus, MAMA, and Oddie's Creek Park. The excursion was made possible by the P&C, and a grant from Charles Sturt University - Community University Partnership (CUP) Grants making this a free opportunity for our students. Our students and staff had an amazing opportunity to engage in various performing and creative arts programs in Albury. There was positive feedback from students and staff, with the highlight being the Flying Fruit Fly Circus activities – I loved the juggling!

The Parent/Teacher meetings held in the hall on Wednesday, 22 February, were a great success. The hall was ‘abuzz’, and teachers were booked out in most timeslots. I enjoyed listening to and talking to parents about the goals and aspirations for their children. These meetings provided a great opportunity to build partnerships between home and school for the benefit of our students’ learning and well-being. We look forward to more opportunities throughout the year for parents and families to engage with our school.

From Wednesday, 15 March to Monday, 27 March 2023, Year 3 and 5 students will participate in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). It is a point-in-time assessment of literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. Years 3 and 5 students will participate in tests for writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

NAPLAN tests are just one part of our school learning assessment program, and questions are primarily based on knowledge, understanding and skills gained from the prior year of schooling. If you have any questions, please get in touch with me through the front office.

I wish our swimmers all the best at the upcoming Riverina swimming carnival, also our football and netball players attending Southern Riverina trials. This term, we have many sporting opportunities for our students, and I have enjoyed hearing about the high levels of skill, participation and, best of all, sportsmanship.

I would like to give a ‘shout out’ to Arabella Landale for offering to swim for another school at the Southern Riverina swimming carnival. This enabled them to enter the competition when one of their swimmers was ill and couldn’t swim a leg of the relay. It put a huge smile on my face when I received an email from Henty Public School thanking Arabella for helping them out. These small gestures do not go unnoticed by staff, students and the community.

Good luck to Will Glass and Ollie Cardile, who travel to Ballina to compete for Riverina at the State Cricket Carnival. Not a bad spot to spend the week playing cricket!

Have a great week!

Principal

Southern Riverina Swimming Carnival

Congratulations to the 25 students that competed in the Southern Riverina swimming carnival on Friday, 24 February, at the Lavington Swim Centre. It was a beautiful day, and all our swimmers gave their best. A big thank you to the parents who helped out as timekeepers on the day. It was fantastic to have so many parents offering to help out and so many parents there to cheer on our swimmers.

Cess Lieschke broke the only record for the day in the Junior Boys backstroke. The old record was 51.44, and Cess swam it in 50.62.

We also had a few champion swimmers for the carnival. Congratulations to Cess Lieschke (Junior Boy champion), Harry Purcell (Junior Boy runner-up), Jasmine Purcell (Senior Girl champion) and Ollie Cardile (Senior Boy runner-up).

We have a team of fourteen students swimming at the Riverina swimming carnival at Leeton on Monday, 6 March. They include Bonnie Cronin, Sophie Burey, Cess Lieschke, Henry Beavis, Harry Purcell, Jasmine Purcell, Zye Liddell, Zayne Liddell, Will Finlay, Eddie Bull, Lachie Saunders, Jonty Ingle, Brydie Laffan and Edwina Barr-Smith. Unfortunately, due to a clash with State cricket, Ollie Cardile, Will Glass and Fergus Glass cannot compete in the events they qualified for. We wish our team well and look forward to hearing how they go.

Years 1-6 Creative and Performing Arts excursion

Fergus Glass
On Tuesday, students in Years 1 to 6 went to Albury for an excursion. We went to MAMA, the Fruit Fly Circus and Oddies Creek.

The Fruit Fly Circus was so fun, it was my favourite place on the excursion. There were five activities, bouncing, juggling, swinging, climbing and going in circles.

At Oddies Creek, we had lunch and then we played a big game of 'the floor is lava'. It was so much fun!

At MAMA, we saw cool pictures and artwork. We watched a video of a man making artworks by doing doughnuts in an old car in the red dirt. There were a lot of little boxes in the wall with secret artworks inside.

Zayne Liddell
On Tuesday, 28 February, the students in Years 1 to 6 went to Albury on a bus. We went to the MAMA museum, Oddies Creek and the Fruit Fly Circus.

First, we went to MAMA and of course there was a lot of cool stuff there. My favourite part about the museum was the silver boxing glove. Then we went to Oddies Creek for lunch and had a little play afterwards. My favourite thing at the park was the rock climb. We then walked to the Fruit Fly Circus and had lots of fun, but my favourite activity was the trampolines. On the trampoline, my favourite trick was spinning around and I did three spins.

Sophie Burey
On Tuesday, 28 February, Years 1 to 6 went on an amazing excursion together. Years 1 and 2 went together, Years 3 and 4 went together and Years 5 and 6 went together. At the Flying Fruit Fly circus, we had four different activity places: aerial, trampoline, bounce and juggling. My favourite part of the Fruit Fly Circus was the aerial space, because we got to be up in the air and swing on the swings.

Also, we went to MAMA and we learnt a lot from our guide, Hannah. There were special boxes and a kid's room with lots of dresses and a boy's helmet. The best part of the MAMA museum was the secret boxes in the walls.

Oddies Creek Park was an amazing place to have lunch and play together. There was a big flying fox that everyone wanted to have a go at. My favourite part of Oddies Creek Park was the flying fox.

In conclusion, the excursion was the best thing ever.

Curriculum Reform

The NSW education system is reforming the curriculum which will be taught in all classrooms from Kindergarten to Year 12. The new curriculum, as a result of the NSW Curriculum Reform, will give students more time to focus on key learning areas so that they can acquire a deeper understanding of central concepts. It will ensure students develop strong foundations for learning, life and work in a complex and fast-changing world.

This reform has been informed by extensive consultation with teachers, parents and education experts, and is underpinned by extensive research. Curriculum reform involves change that spans many aspects of schooling, including teaching, learning, assessment and reporting to parents. New syllabuses provide schools with a unique opportunity to re-focus and place curriculum at the heart of school planning. Key curriculum changes include:

  • building strong foundations for future learning with new English and mathematics syllabuses for Kindergarten to Year 2

  • an entirely new curriculum from 2022 with new syllabuses focused on what is essential to know and do in early and middle years of schooling, and key learning areas in the senior years

  • providing more time for teaching by reducing the hours teachers spend on extra-curricular topics and issues and compliance requirements

  • strengthening post- school pathways with new learning areas for Years 11 and 12 that clearly link learning to future employment and study options.

The new curriculum will ensure every student develops strong foundations for learning, life and work. The reforms are vital for the young people in our schools today, and for those who will arrive in the years to come. More information can be found on the NSW Department of Education and NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA)External link websites.

Teachers in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 have been implementing the new curriculum this year. They are doing an outstanding job learning 2 new syllabus documents to plan engaging and high-impact learning opportunities for your children. We are so proud of the way in which our Team embrace change and respond to the research-base, in the pursuit of excellence. Our Year 3-6 Teachers will be exploring aspects of the new syllabus this year to identify and plan for changes required for effective curriculum implementation.

We are excited to share some of our learning with you at our upcoming Parent Reading Night which will be in Week 9. The day and time are to be confirmed. Please keep an eye out for more details about this evening.

Many thanks

Southern Riverina Boys AFL Trials

Isaac Mathewson, Blake Robards, Will Glass, Ollie Cardile, Cess Lieschke and Fergus Glass were selected to represent Holbrook at the Southern Riverina football trials. On Thursday, 2 March, the boys travelled to Culcairn and participated in a skills session and scratch match in an effort to be chosen to represent the Southern Riverina on 10 March.

Due to an injury the day before, Isaac wasn’t able to participate and Jimmy Boers was also unlucky to miss selection, due to an arm injury. Congratulations to Ollie Cardile, Will Glass and Cess Lieschke who have been successful in progressing to the next stage. Fergus Glass would have been selected to play for the Southern Riverina, however due to family commitments, he is not able to attend the next stage this year.

We wish our boys all the best as they move through the selection process which culminates in state level selection for 22 of NSW's best. Good luck boys! Put your best foot forward and enjoy it.

Our boys showed great skill, determination and sportsmanship and I was proud to be there as an observer and selector.

NAPLAN - Years 3 and 5 students - Wednesday, 15 March to Monday 27 March 2023

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point-in-time assessment of literacy and numeracy skills. Each year students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in tests for writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

From 2023, NAPLAN is moving to Term 1 and will take place from Wednesday, 15 March, to Monday, 27 March. The reason for this change is so that results can be returned to schools earlier in the year, which will support teachers in understanding the learning needs of their students and plan accordingly.

NAPLAN tests are just one part of our school learning assessment program, and questions are primarily based on knowledge, understanding and skills gained from the prior year of schooling.

In preparation for NAPLAN 2023, our school will undertake activities to help students to become familiar with the format and functionality of the online tests. These activities are not an assessment of student ability and will not be marked.

Students and parents can access the public demonstration site (https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site) to familiarise themselves with NAPLAN and the types of questions and tools available. Excessive preparation for NAPLAN is not required nor recommended.

If you have any questions about NAPLAN, please get in touch with your child’s teacher.

World Down Syndrome Day - 21 March 2023

This year, Holbrook Public School will again celebrate World Down Syndrome Day on Tuesday, 21 March. Students are invited to wear their favourite, craziest, silliest socks to school. More information about the day’s celebration will go home via SkoolBag closer to the date.

Down syndrome is the most common genetic condition in the world. Approximately 290 babies are born in Australia each year with Down syndrome. Most people have two of each chromosome. Down syndrome occurs when three of chromosome 21 are developed during pregnancy, hence why it is sometimes referred to as Trisomy 21 or 321. World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), held on the 21st of March each year, is a global awareness day that the United Nations have officially observed since 2012. The date for WDSD is the 21st day of the 3rd month. This date was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down syndrome.

Is your child attending a government high school?: If you would like your child to attend a government high school in 2024, you must complete an expression of interest for Year 6 to 7 transition. The expression of interest lets you indicate which school(s) you would like your child to attend in Year 7. After you submit this expression of interest and it has been assessed, your child will be offered a place at a government high school.

Is your child attending a private high school?: You still need to complete an expression of interest, even if your child does not require placement in a government high school next year. Select the Placement Not Required in a Government High School link.

Please complete an EOI using the Online Enrolment System by clicking the link.
