Newsletter: Term 2 Issue 4

Principal's Message

A big congratulations to Room 2 who performed a fantastic assembly item titled ‘The Crown’. I especially enjoyed this recital and was impressed with the students choral speaking; keeping the audience engaged and on the edge of their seats!

You would have seen through our communication channels or received a note home today re the impacts COVID-19 is still having on our school operations. I am pleased that together, we have been able to make the best of this situation and ensure your child’s continued learning. The letter outlined how we are still maintaining face-to-face teaching and the impact of both staff and student absences on reporting for Semester 1. Whilst our reports will be distributed as usual, teachers Semester 1 reporting involves the provision of an indicative grade based on work assessed to date and can change as the year and more evidence is collected. Absences and coverage of classes can have an impact upon this. If you have any queries and wish for additional information on your child’s progress, please make a time to discuss directly with the classroom teacher.

As a school we wish Mrs Nicole Giles a fond farewell and all the best in her new role in town. She has been a valuable Education Assistant and staff member and will be missed. We welcome Mrs Kathy Offer who is assisting with the coverage of classes as part of the Departments flying squad of teachers for the remainder of the term.

Our staff participated in a particularly engaging and informative professional learning program last week from STEM Smart, supported by Newman Futures. We delved into the STEM program at school and looked at the integration of different technologies into teaching and learning programs. It is exciting to see where programs can be enhanced and include the integration of digital literacies.

You would have noticed that our school canteen has limited operating hours for the remainder of the term. The canteen is run by our fantastic P&C and staffed by parent volunteers. If you can assist in any way, please contact our P&C as we would love to keep this valuable service operating at full capacity. A big thank you to the volunteers who give up their own time each week so out students can order yummy recess and lunch!

Please see the below up coming events for happenings around the school.

Congratulations to Asha and Fletcher who were recently voted in as Faction Captains by their fellow faction peers.

Resilience Project - Parent Hub Summary

In the final part of The Resilience Project's digital series, Martin shares an important message about creating environments where our kids can ask for help.

65% of adolescents do not seek help for mental illness.

In this presentation, Martin shares a personal experience about a traumatic event that happened to him as a child. He explains how he overcame adversity and built resilience by asking for support, particularly from his family.

Note: This video contains a story of sexual abuse that may be triggering. Please consider this before watching. For mental health resources and support information, visit The Resilience Project’s Support Page

                                                                                                                                      Ni Hao!

This year Newman Primary School introduced Chinese into our languages curriculum for years 3 to 6. As part of our journey, we are learning the Mandarin language as well as lots of interesting cultural facts about China. After our first module, years 3 to 6 are now able to have an introductory conversation where they can say hello [Ni Hao,] goodbye [Zai Jian,] and introduce their name [Wo Jiao.] Our year 3 and 4 classes have been focusing on learning the names of animals and we think the panda is very cute [Xion Mao hen ke ai.] Years 5 and 6 have continued to expand on having simple conversations about our names and where we are from, learning the pronunciation of several countries such as Australia [Aodaliya] and England [Ying guo.]

We look forward to learning much more as the year progresses and would like to thank our teachers in China: Jin Yicun, Wu Ruihong, Elisa Bian and Jin Jinhua for their time each week when they Zoom in to us.

Harmony Cup Excursion

Harmony Cup was held at South Newman Primary School on Friday 27 May.

We were so happy to be celebrating ‘everyone belongs’ with all the Year 5 and 6 students from Newman Primary and South Newman Primary Schools. Students were mixed together in netball and football teams competing in a round robin, fun fixture.

A very special thanks to all the parents that volunteered to coach teams and those who came along to cheer the students on. A very big appreciation thank you to the Newman Senior High School students from the Rise Up program who assisted greatly with the umpiring, coaching, setting up and packing away for the event.

A fantastic day was had by everyone involved.
