27th August 2022 - Junior School Update

Principal’s Report

Mrs Chant

Welcome to Term 4.

I continue to see the great work in classrooms as the leadership team completes weekly learning walks. Bump It Up Walls and Learning Walls are evident in all classrooms and assist your child with the 5 questions:

1.       What are you learning? Why?

2.       How are you going?

3.       How do you know?

4.       How can you improve?

5.       Where can you go for help?

Some classes have begun their assessment task/s so attendance at school is crucial at this time. Please ensure you have notified the office if your child is absent.

At our school we take attendance very seriously. We understand that children get sick and we appreciate you advising the office when this is so, however, an alarming number of students have unexplained absences or repeated absences which will affect their long term success in school. When in Year 6 this also impacts their eligibility to attend the Year 6 social.

Did you know?

In the coming weeks our school will be conducting a lockdown and evacuation drill. Please do not be alarmed if you hear our drills in the community.

I have been advised that the QLD government will be installing speed cameras in all school zones in the coming months which will be active during the assigned pick up and drop off times on the sign. Please be aware of this as you travel around school zones.

This week we begin planning around 2023 classes and with fluctuating numbers that impact our structures, I will not be in a position to publicise details of 2023 until closer to the end of the term.

Our staff have a great deal of knowledge of all of our students, and spend a great deal of time placing students with the right teacher, balancing academic and social needs, as well as considering any requirements for students with disabilities and other diverse learning needs. Composite classes that may be formed are not streamed and will have a diverse mix of all learners. Our teachers are trained to teach across all year levels. I have a great deal of confidence in all of my teachers, and know that all parents and students should be extremely comfortable knowing we have such a dedicated and capable group of teachers at our school. I ask that you trust that we are able to make these decisions and that your students will be well catered for at our school.

Class lists will be available for all parents from Monday January 16th via the front office. We then will have an open morning in the January Pupil Free Day week for parents and students to meet their new teacher. This will be clearly advertised at the end of the school year. There will be a number of special circumstances that are considered for students with disability in regard to knowing which teacher your child will have. If your family is applicable, our HOSES Nicole Inder, will be in touch before the end of the term.

I am happy to receive requests for placement of children relating to social or family needs (i.e. not being in the same class as family members or strong friendships that can actually hamper learning) but will not be considering any requests by parents for a certain teacher. Please note, that while we will seriously consider your requests in this area we may not be able to honour everyone’s wishes. Please submit these requests in writing to the front office no later than Thursday 10th November. Requests after this date will not influence decision making.

Class structures will be released in communication with parents in Week 10 which will include the teachers on those classes, however, are subject to change as we adjust to fluctuating enrolments over the Christmas holidays.

If you know you are leaving our school at the end of the year, we appreciate you notifying the office as soon as possible. Equally, if you know of families that would like to enrol with us, please encourage them to make contact at their earliest convenience.

Our end of year concert is scheduled for Thursday 1st December and will be held at the Beaudesert State High School Hall. At our end of year concert, each year level will perform their selected Christmas carol alongside other school performances. The P&C will release further information to our community in the coming weeks. A reminder that all parents are very welcome to attend our P&C meetings. Our next meeting is organised for Tuesday 8th November from 6:00pm in R Block accessed via Eaglesfield Street. We hope to see you there.

Thank you to our amazing P&C members who organised a lunch break Halloween disco for all year levels this week. The students absolutely loved it!

As we near the end of the year our Business Manager, Sandy Currie, is contacting families to ensure all debts are paid for 2022. Please note, families with bad debts will not be eligible for future incursions and excursions until the amount is paid in full. Statements were sent home with the final payment due 17th November.

Due to unforeseen circumstances on Wednesday 26th October, school swimming was cancelled. All students who were unable to attend swimming will have their $3.50 credited to their account to be used in a future payment.

As previously communicated via our PBL team, this year our school replaced our positive school reward systems with Beauy Bucks. With the same foundation as our previous Vivo system, teachers allocate Beauy Bucks to students throughout the year as they aspire to reach Bronze, Silver, Gold and Gold pin levels. Our teachers are allocated 400-450 points each week, depending on class numbers. Please see below table for further information. Students have until the beginning of Week 10 to achieve the gold pin level. If you have any questions, please contact your classroom teacher or our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) teacher, Sarah Smith via the front office.

Prep Transition days

I’m looking forward to welcoming our new Prep families to our next transition day on Tuesday 1st November from 9:30 – 10:30. We are also accepting out of catchment applications. Thank you for letting your friends and families know. Beaudesert is a wonderful school and we look forward to meeting new, and families, faces in the coming weeks.

Have a wonderful week,

Angela

Seeing double/triple

It was great to see our Year 6 students dress up like our very own IT technician, Mr O’Brien, for the Halloween disco this week. Mr O’Brien couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw double of himself walking around the school. Thanks for the laugh girls!

2023 Enrolments

Interviews for 2023 Prep students are currently being held, if you have not received a phone call from the school to organise an interview, please call the school to arrange.

If you know of any prep aged students who have not yet enrolled, can you please encourage them to call the school to organise an enrolment interview.  We have had parents come to our Transition Days who still need to submit their enrolment forms and have an interview, please do so at your earliest convenience to ensure your child’s place in Prep.

If you are planning to enrol your child at another school for 2023, can you please contact the school immediately to let us know of these plans as we are looking at staffing and classes for next year and we need this information to ensure accuracy.

Parking

Just a reminder to please not park across driveways during school pick up and drop off.  Our neighbours would like to be able to get out of their driveways at these times.  I know that with all the construction happening it is difficult to find parking, especially at the front of the school, but we need to be respectful of our neighbours.

The Disability Standards for Education

Resources for Families

Please find below some information products for students with disability and their parents and carers regarding The Disability Standards for Education (DSE). This is important information about the roles and responsibilities of all people involved in the care of young people with a disability.

The products are designed to help you:

  • understand the rights of your child as a student with disability.
  • work with education providers to make sure your child can learn and participate on the same basis as students without disability.

Students with disability and their families from across Australia helped to design these resources. Children and Young People with Disability Australia (CYDA) asked them what they needed. Students and families then worked with CYDA to bring these ideas to life. Together, they came up with the focus and content for each resource. The content of these resources was checked by students and their families and by other disability organisations and education authorities across Australia.

Lost Property

As always we have a mountain of lost property piling up at school. A lot of it is unnamed which makes it extremely hard to get it returned to the rightful owner. If your student has lost any items direct them to the lost property bins which are located near the undercover area at the end of the year 6 classroom block or you're welcome to pop in for a look yourselves. Please check there if your children are missing any of their belongings.

PLEASE MAKE SURE ALL BELONGINGS ARE CLEARLY LABELLED!

Chappy Corner

A highlight this term has been having some officers from the Kokoda Army barracks come and join us for parade and share their thanks for our notes and letters of thanks that we sent to them back in term 2 as part of our kindness challenge. How amazing was it when they spoke and then presented us with five super cool robots for use in our STEM programs. I love that our kindness is making a difference and that the students are seeing the positive impact they are having by simply being kind. This term we have reached out to our Police force and delivered some beautiful colouring in pictures for them. It was pretty special to walk in and drop off a huge bundle of pictures and see the smiles on the faces of the Police officers. Well done Beaudesert State School!

This term we are also being kind by thanking our teachers, helping them with a job, writing cards for our grandparents and next week, thanking our tuckshop ladies. In week 7, our kindness challenge is to donate a gift from someone in need. You can do this by placing a gift under a tree, such as the Kmart Wishing Tree, or you can bring them in to the chappy room and I will arrange for them to be distributed. I gave out almost 50 certificates on parade this week for students who completed all nine challenges last term…. I wonder if we can beat that this term 😊

Please don’t forget that parents are welcome to come up on a Tuesday after drop off for a coffee and chat. Parenting can be hard at times and it is always nice to have a community around you who can provide support.

As we get closer to the end of the year, please consider donating your second hand uniforms so that we can help families. You can drop clean and washed uniforms up to the Chappy room any Tues, Wed or Thurs.

Please don’t hesitate to let me know if I can help in any way.

😊 Chappy Jade

Here are some of the things I get up to each week:

·         Having conversations with children, staff and parents, seeking to supporting them socially, emotionally and spiritually

·         All Stars Friendship Group

·         Bella Girls Group

·         HOPE Cooking Group

·         Brekky Club

·         Lego Club & Uno

·         HOPE Shop

·         Kindness Project

·         Parent Chat, Coffee & Cake (moving to Tuesday’s)

·         Care for teacher wellbeing

The prize portal is now open, so jump back on to your child’s profile page and you will be able to select their prizes. Prizes must be ordered by next Friday (19th August).

You may have noticed that next to Parent Chat, Coffee & Cake I have mentioned moving it to Tuesday’s. It has been a little tricky to make it up to the Chappy Room in time each week with brekky club, so we are moving it to Tuesday mornings, 8.40am to 9.30am. Please feel free to come up and enjoy a coffee and cake/biscuits etc, along with the chance to just chat with other parents and share in the journey of parenthood.

I am here to support the whole school community, so please feel free to contact me if I can be of any help.

Have a wonderful week 😊 Chappy Jade

Sports Update

Paige Jumps into the QLD top 4!!

Congrats Paige

Year 4 student Paige recently competed in Brisbane at the Queensland School Sport Track & Field State Championships. She was very successful coming in 4th in the state in Long Jump. The whole school is extremely proud of her achievements. Her hard work and dedication have certainly paid off.

Sporting Achievements

If you would like your child’s school sporting achievements outlined in the newsletter, please contact the front office on 5540 1111. A reminder that the P&C offer school sporting sponsorships which can be applied for via the front office. The application can also be found on our school website under Support and Resources / Forms and Documents.

The Arts Department

This term in the Performing Arts preps have been creating a dance to show making a wish. While Year 1s and 2s have been learning about the special animals in our area. Last week we had a special visit from Miss Stacie who taught as all about Mununjali totems, and we even learnt a dance to show each animal!

STEM Team News

This semester the Prep classes have been investigating how to use some of our robots. Our Bee-bots were used with directions, counting and estimating with lots of trial and error to make them do what we wanted them to.  There were lots of cheers as the bees moved cotton balls around the squares and followed the directions to end up in the correct square. We then moved onto using Spheros (a round ball robot) to complete obstacle courses.

Our year ones and twos have been creating animated retells of the story "The Three Billy Goats Gruff".  They planned how they wanted their characters to move, sound effects and speech. This was then put into action through the app Scratch Jnr.  Backgrounds were designed and then the characters were all coded to retell the story.

P & C News

Halloween Disco

Wow! A wonderful turn out at our Halloween Disco this year! Thank you to all our helpers: Miss Payne, Miss Wood and Sam for setting up, Miss Wood for supplying all the tunes and fun, Mrs Becerra for help packing up, and to all the teachers who came to help supervise and join in on the fun. Lastly, a big thank you to all the students for coming and having fun at the disco, and for your donations to the P&C.

See you next year!
