Principal's Report

Remembrance Day

Last Sunday Mrs Jeff and I had the pleasure of representing our school at the Remembrance Day Ceremony held at the newly renovated ANZAC Memorial in Hyde Park Sydney.

Remembrance Day has a special significance in 2018. Sunday 11 November 2018 marked the 100th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War (1914-1918).

According to reports in the Sydney Morning Herald perhaps the most poignant part of the service was when members of the public were allowed to float 1701 cardboard poppies onto the new cascades watching them slowly drift to the lower levels.

The figure represents the 1701 locations from around the state from where young men enlisted voluntarily. In the new subterranean Hall of Service below the memorial are soil samples also taken from the 1701 locations. Kingswood Public School was one of these locations.

In the four years of the war more than 330,000 Australians had served overseas and more than 60,000 of them had died. The social effects of these losses cast a long shadow over post war decades.

Lest we forget.

Creating Chances Program

Stage 2 classes have been offered the opportunity to participate in the Creating Chances program, which is aimed at providing students in Year 9 at Kingswood High School, the chance to develop their self esteem  and leadership qualities by implementing sports programs for local primary schools.

The programs allows the Year 9 students to feel empowered as role models by designing and delivering sports programs for younger students. They actively develop their leadership, communication and conflict resolution skills, gain experience in giving and receiving feedback,  and learn how to take responsibility for the safety of others.

The Stage 2 students build relationships with older children which develops their sense of togetherness with these students, improving their resilience by watching and interacting with the older students, as well as having more personalised interaction due to lower coach and student ratios. This also further develops a sense of community fostering the students connection with the local high school whilst helping to demystify the future at the local high school.

End of Term Dates

Students last day this term will be Wednesday 19 December 2019. The last day for staff will be Thursday 20 December as we have completed our professional learning hours attending after hours training and workshops during the year. The school will be closed on Friday 21 December.

Breaking the Silence Schools Program

Kingswood Public School is taking part in the Breaking the Silence Schools Program again this year. The focus of the program in the primary years is respectful relationships. As part of this program we will mark White Ribbon Day on Friday 23 November, 2018 with students being involved in activities on the day. We ask that students wear something white that day to signify our support for this important cause.

More information is available about the program and this day on the website www.whiteribbon.org.au
