Welcome back to Term 2. This term the P&C and school have agreed to trial using our Skoolbag app as our main communication source and newsletters as a supplementary information source. At the end of this term we will seek feedback from our parent community around your preference for newsletter frequency. There will be 2 newsletters released this term.
Firstly, a very happy Mother’s Day for last weekend. We hope our Mother’s and Mother figures were spoilt on Sunday and had a wonderful day. Also, a big thank you to the P&C for their work in the annual Mother’s Day stall.
Our school is experiencing an increase in physical misconduct incidents across the school in all year levels. These involve hands on behaviour that can lead to serious consequences. There is never a reason for a child to be physical with another. We have numerous staff on duty each break wearing a fluro yellow vest so they are easily seen. Please encourage your child to speak with an adult if they have a problem. Alternatively, please advise your class teacher if your child is experiencing problems at school so we can provide assistance and where necessary, investigate the incident. All behaviour concerns at before and after school care are directed to Camp Australia and bus incidents are reported to the appropriate bus company. Thank you for your help with this.
It is very unfortunate to note that our school has seen an increase in vaping amongst our young children, in and out of school. Electronic cigarettes are also known as e-cigarettes, e-cigars, vape pens or personal vapourisers. They heat liquid, which usually contains nicotine, into a fine vapour for inhalation into the lungs.
In Queensland, electronic cigarettes and electronic cigarette products containing nicotine are illegal unless on prescription and supplied from a pharmacist or through Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) processes.
Nicotine is a dangerous poison and can cause serious injury and death. It can also be absorbed through the skin. Liquid nicotine refill for electronic cigarettes are particularly dangerous to younger children who might be attracted by the packaging and the use of fruit and confectionery flavouring, such as chocolate, bubble gum, apple, and watermelon.
It is highly inappropriate for children to have access to or use vapes. While we are doing our best to be proactive in this space at school, we need the help of our parents. I encourage all parents to have age appropriate discussions around vaping and what your child can do if they encounter a peer pressure situation. I am looking into assistance from our local police and medical professionals to educate our young people in Year 4-6, however, if you have concerns with children in earlier year levels, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Please refer to the QLD Health website for further information regarding vaping: https://www.health.qld.gov.au/public-health/topics/atod/tobacco-laws/electronic-cigarettes?msclkid=0dbd4cf0cf5511eca9ce964e279a5d1c and https://www.qld.gov.au/health/staying-healthy/atods/smoking/devices?msclkid=bb2869fecf5711ec8b8a14fa76c2a4a3.
Each year our school offers the ThinkUKnow program for students in Years 3-6 through the Federal and local Police. These sessions are in the coming weeks for all students in Years 3-6 with a parent session to also be confirmed later in the term.
