Beaudesert State School Newsletter

Principal’s Report

Mrs Chant

Welcome back to Term 2. This term the P&C and school have agreed to trial using our Skoolbag app as our main communication source and newsletters as a supplementary information source. At the end of this term we will seek feedback from our parent community around your preference for newsletter frequency. There will be 2 newsletters released this term.

Firstly, a very happy Mother’s Day for last weekend. We hope our Mother’s and Mother figures were spoilt on Sunday and had a wonderful day. Also, a big thank you to the P&C for their work in the annual Mother’s Day stall.

Our school is experiencing an increase in physical misconduct incidents across the school in all year levels. These involve hands on behaviour that can lead to serious consequences. There is never a reason for a child to be physical with another. We have numerous staff on duty each break wearing a fluro yellow vest so they are easily seen. Please encourage your child to speak with an adult if they have a problem. Alternatively, please advise your class teacher if your child is experiencing problems at school so we can provide assistance and where necessary, investigate the incident. All behaviour concerns at before and after school care are directed to Camp Australia and bus incidents are reported to the appropriate bus company. Thank you for your help with this.

It is very unfortunate to note that our school has seen an increase in vaping amongst our young children, in and out of school. Electronic cigarettes are also known as e-cigarettes, e-cigars, vape pens or personal vapourisers. They heat liquid, which usually contains nicotine, into a fine vapour for inhalation into the lungs.

In Queensland, electronic cigarettes and electronic cigarette products containing nicotine are illegal unless on prescription and supplied from a pharmacist or through Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) processes.

Nicotine is a dangerous poison and can cause serious injury and death. It can also be absorbed through the skin. Liquid nicotine refill for electronic cigarettes are particularly dangerous to younger children who might be attracted by the packaging and the use of fruit and confectionery flavouring, such as chocolate, bubble gum, apple, and watermelon.

It is highly inappropriate for children to have access to or use vapes. While we are doing our best to be proactive in this space at school, we need the help of our parents. I encourage all parents to have age appropriate discussions around vaping and what your child can do if they encounter a peer pressure situation. I am looking into assistance from our local police and medical professionals to educate our young people in Year 4-6, however, if you have concerns with children in earlier year levels, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Please refer to the QLD Health website for further information regarding vaping: https://www.health.qld.gov.au/public-health/topics/atod/tobacco-laws/electronic-cigarettes?msclkid=0dbd4cf0cf5511eca9ce964e279a5d1c and https://www.qld.gov.au/health/staying-healthy/atods/smoking/devices?msclkid=bb2869fecf5711ec8b8a14fa76c2a4a3.

Each year our school offers the ThinkUKnow program for students in Years 3-6 through the Federal and local Police. These sessions are in the coming weeks for all students in Years 3-6 with a parent session to also be confirmed later in the term. Further information can be found at: https://www.thinkuknow.org.au/?msclkid=72256d81cf5711ec91d912c5a657b161

Congratulations to our students who received their Cross Country age champion medallion on parade this week:

This term we wish Ms Charmaine Jeffrey the very best at Dysart SHS. Replacing Charmaine is Ms Judy Smith in Year 3. We also welcome Mr Blake Mazic to the team who will be our internal relief teacher for the year. Mrs Chloe O’Dea will continue working in ECDP and KindyLinQ this term then will transition into our internal relief teacher towards the end of the year.

At the end of this term we will farewell Mrs Jess Martin who will go on maternity leave. We are all very excited for the arrival of her first child and wish her all the very best. The new Year 1 teacher is to be confirmed closer to the end of the term.

We continue to see an increase of students coming to school unwell. Thank you for your prompt responses when we call for immediate pick up and for advising the front office when your child is unwell. It is a Department of Education directive that students who are unwell are to remain at home. I continue to ask you to call the front office if your child has COVID so we can advise our school community. Your medical confidentiality continues to be a priority at our school so please be assured that your child or a staff member’s details will not be released to our community in any circumstances where a COVID case if confirmed.

We predict a very rainy week with possible localised flooding. I have spoken to our students on parade this week around ‘if it is flooded, forget it’. Thank you for reiterating this message at home too. Please call the front office if your child will be absent this week, particularly due to flooding or illness.

We continue to plan for the upcoming school events this term see the Important Dates section of the newsletter for everything that's coming up.

*In the event we need to change a date, this will be communicated via our Skoolbag app.

Deputy Principal Update

Miss Gauld

ANZAC Day Ceremony

On the 21st April we held our school ANZAC Day Ceremony.  All children showed the utmost respect during the ceremony and should be congratulated for this.  Well done to Hayden, Charlotte, Lexi, Addison and Eamon who spoke incredibly well on the day.

Thank you to all the students who marched on ANZAC Day with the school. It was great to see the students there marching with pride as they represented the school.

Cross Country

Congratulations to Ryan, Omari, Paige and Hayden who represented the Beaudesert Zone for Cross Country.  The students said the course was wet and muddy but all performed well.  Results are as follows:

Paige – 4th

Omari – 5th

Ryan – 6th

Hayden – 6th

Under 8’s Day

Under 8’s Day will be held on Friday 20th May from 9:00-10:30 with students from Years Prep – 2 attending.  Parents are welcome to attend this fun filled morning.

Attendance

It is very disappointing that the whole school attendance is at 88.2%.  I understand that some students have been absent due to illness but some students are absent due to birthdays or having a shopping day, these reasons are not acceptable. At the current time we have 34 % of students have an attendance rate of under 85%, some as low as 36% which equates to having attended school for 14 days this semester.

Junior School Classroom Reports

Prep

The Preps have had an eventful and productive start to the year, full to the brim with learning in their literacy groups, maths groups and during negotiated activity times. The students have been responsive to the Jolly Phonics program this year and we’re pleased to report that they are learning a lot of letters and sounds through songs and actions. This will undoubtedly help the Preps take their first big step into the world of reading and writing.

In term 1 our Science was all about the weather, and wow, we were able to observe a wide variety of weather including storms, floods and heat. This term we are learning about materials and their properties. We are looking forward to making our wind ornament at the end of the term.

Please remember to check the SkoolBag App to keep up to date with upcoming events. For example- Under 8’s Day, Colour Fun Run, Lap-a-thon and Sports Day.

Year 1

What a great start of the year it has been for year 1! All 3 classes have settled in extremely well and have adjusted very quickly to being part of the ‘big school’. It’s hard to believe that we are almost halfway through the year. Well done year 1!

In Term 1 in English, we have been looking at different text structures. In 1A and 1C students focussed on narrative while 1/2D looked at poetry.  This term 1/2D will be writing narrative retells while 1A and 1C will be writing character descriptions.

In Maths, we have been learning all about representing numbers in a variety of ways.  Students have enjoyed discovering many ways in which we can show numbers, including number lines, ten frames and MAB blocks. In term 1, we also covered the topic of ‘chance’. This term, Year 1 have begun learning about ‘addition’, ‘measurement’ and ‘2D and 3D shape’.

In Science for Term 1, we investigated different habitats and how these provide for living things (1/2D looked at ‘materials’). This term we are looking at ‘materials’ and 1/2D are investigating ‘Light and sound’.

In a few weeks, year 1 students will be having a visit from QFES to learn all about fire safety!

Have a look at some of the wonderful things we have been doing this term in 1A, 1C and 1/2D.

Year 2

It’s been a busy term for Year 2 so far. We are excited about the new ICT learning platform we have introduced to engage students. We are using SeeSaw on iPads for students to interactively complete work. Each student has their own portfolio. They are able to record themselves, type, draw and lots more to complete their tasks. It’s been a great opportunity for students to increase their ICT skills and to work in partnerships with each other.

Lost Property

As always we have a mountain of lost property piling up at school. A lot of it is unnamed which makes it extremely hard to get it returned to the rightful owner. If your student has lost any items direct them to the lost property bins which are located near the undercover area at the end of the year 6 classroom block or you're welcome to pop in for a look yourselves. Please check there if your children are missing any of their belongings.

PLEASE MAKE SURE ALL BELONGINGS ARE CLEARLY LABELLED!

KindyLinQ

KindyLinQ is a FREE pre-kindy program for three year old children to attend with a parent/caregive. Mrs Cathy Meehan, an Early Years Teacher at Beaudesert State School will be running the program 2 days a week. KindyLinQ aims to support children's learning and development and engagement in the year before the start kindergarten, enhance the confidence of parents/caregivers as their children's first teachers, and forge strong and supportive links between home, school, early childhood services and the community.

Chappy Corner

We have some really exciting things happening this term in Chaplaincy. Chappy Week is fast approaching in week 6 and we can’t wait to celebrate again with our Chappy Colour Run on Friday 27th May. Last year was super fun and I have had children asking me ever since when we were doing it again. Last year we also raised an amazing sum which enabled me to continue to be here 3 days a week. We get funding for 2 days a week, but to be here for the 3rd day, we need to raise those funds. If you haven’t signed up yet, can I encourage you to jump onto www.schoolfunrun.com.au and sign up today. Every little bit helps and all you need to do is raise over $10 to get a prize. A couple of weeks ago, 1C enjoyed some yummy Chappy Choc Chip biscuits for having the most students fundraising. At the end of this week we will recognise another class who are doing their bit for Chaplaincy. Thank you so much for your support.

We are also holding a Chappy Dinner on Thursday 26th May. This year we have Australian Olympic weightlifter, Deb Acason coming to share with us. It should be a great night! The dinner will be held at Harvest Point café on Walker Road. If you would like to come, you can find more details on the flyer below, or feel free to come and chat to me.

This term I have started up a parent chat morning tea on a Thursday morning at 9am. The chappy room is open with tea and coffee and a morning tea treat, along with the opportunity to just sit and chat with other parents. Parenting is not always easy and it can be such an encouragement and help to be able to share in the journey with others. Please feel free to join us.

Next week we will be recognising all the students who completed the Kindness Challenges for last term. This term we have been busy thanking our service men and women (with some very special cards and notes), our amazing office staff, and our Mums. Well done Beaudesert for practicing kindness!

I am so thankful for the opportunity of being your school Chappy. Having conversations with students, parents and staff, running programs and providing social, emotional and spiritual support.

Have a wonderful week 😊 Chappy Jade

Sports Update

This term is chock-a-block with exciting events! We have the P-3 Lap-a-thon and the Y3-6 Sports Day in Week 7. I am looking forward in seeing the Beauy Spirit and how our young athletes will perform.

CROSS COUNTRY SUCCESS

Further to what Miss Gauld mentioned earlier in the newsletter, I would like to extend my congratulations to Hayden, Omari, Ryan and Paige on advancing into the Pacific Districts for Cross Country! We all wish you all the best.

From the Japanese Desk

This term in Japanese, Year 4s are exploring the mascot culture of Japan, learning colours and basic body parts.  Students will create their own Japanese mascot and describe in sentences.

Years 5 and 6 are studying the unit of family, learning vocabulary relating to family members and counter classifiers of people.  Students will create and describe their own mini photo albums.

Now that our parades have returned, Pikachu too has returned to our classrooms. Pikachu points are given to each class during Japanese lessons, for excellent transitions, respectful behaviour, and whole class participation.

The winning class for Week 4 is Mrs Blake’s class – 5B.

Well done! -Yoku dekimashita

STEM Team News

Towards the end of last term our new stem program for Beaudesert state school started. The group is made up of year six students that were invited to attend because of their grades in science technology English and maths.

we began with drones and looking at the different ways that they are used to solve problems in our world. We continue to fly our drones and we can see that the skills in piloting these has improved immensely already even though we may have lost one drone.

We have now moved onto aviation and planes where we have been looking at the history of aircraft and doing some future designs to solve a problem. Last week we looked at fixed wing aircraft and made our own using paddle pop sticks and changing the design of these to see if we could improve how far they travelled. We will be creating our own paper aeroplanes and a launchpad for these aeroplanes to see how far we can make them travel. We will be looking at comparing the fixed wing aircraft to the rotary wing aircraft.

What are the kids saying?

Kelly - The best thing is that we get to do all these new activities that I might not of experienced.

Adlai - Flying the drones is awesome

Amber - I've enjoyed making things like paddle pop boomerangs.

Hayden - I'm so excited to be experiencing new things that I've never done before, like who would think to make boomerangs with paddle pop sticks and glue guns, I wouldn't have.
