Here at Curtin Primary we have so many caring and considerate students who enjoy helping others. This term, some of our year 5 and 6 students have volunteered to put their leadership skills to good use. These students have eagerly taken on the roles of reading mentors, sports coaches and play facilitators.
Our reading mentors meet twice a week before school and spend time with a junior buddy helping support them to practice their reading skills. When reading together, the mentors might discuss what is happening in the book, talk about the pictures, make connections between events in the story and their own experiences, model common reading strategies and encourage the younger students to use them to work out words in the text. Junior students choose between being read to, reading along with their mentor or taking the lead and reading to them.
Our play facilitators volunteer once a week and attend lunch club, playing a range of games with other students. Whilst playing these games, play facilitators encourage students to take turns, speak respectfully, negotiate rules and win/lose graciously. They also try and expand friendships and support students to make connections with other students who may also be attending lunch club.
Our sports coaches work in small groups and volunteer once a week either at recess or lunch time to set up various sporting activities on the junior playground. These sessions are also aimed at taking turns, establishing and following rules, speaking respectfully and encouragingly to others, winning/losing graciously. Some of the sporting activities our coaches have planned include: soccer, AFL, relay games, parachute activities, capture the flag and other fun games.
It is wonderful to see all our student leaders reflecting on their sessions; planning and discussing what they might do next time or asking advice on how to manage certain situations.
Fence update
This week, contractors will begin construction on the school fence. Over the next few weeks, you may see additional vehicles moving around the school grounds and particular areas will be temporarily sectioned off to ensure safe play zones for students. Please be aware of this construction and take care when moving around the school grounds.
Enjoy the rest of your week.
