Principal's Message

Wow, Week 9 already! Since our last update we have been entertained by our Kindergarten students with a fantastic assembly where we were reminded of being positive like a ray of sunshine. This week and next, we have and will acknowledge the school year with our Graduation, Presentation Events and class celebrations of learning. We hope to see everyone here, with our students, revelling in the year that was.

Transition has been happening for many year levels throughout the school. It was fantastic to receive such positive feedback about our Year 6’s who attended Newman SHS as part of their transition program. Here is a snippet of feedback from their staff; “May you please give a huge thanks to your Year 6 students. They were absolutely delightful. It was a pleasure meeting them and we look forward to welcoming them in 2023.”

Next Wednesday after our final assembly our School Board will host an open meeting in our library at 9am. Please come and listen to the Board Chair as we report on the Board’s operations for 2022. Everyone is welcome.

Our school has been looking at a new modernized and functional jumper/jacket 2023. Our P&C and Board are excited to having this new part of the uniform ready for 2023. Our previous jumpers will still be part of the uniform as current stock gets phased out.

In Week 10, we will be presenting our 100% Attendance Awards for Semester 2. Well done to these students who have not missed a day of school in Terms 3 and 4. What an effort!

Departing Staff

We wish a sad farewell, but are really excited for our departing teachers and staff, who are starting a new phase of their lives. You have been amazing, and we will miss you.

·       Miss Jenkinson - who has gained full time employment in Perth.

·       Mrs Barrett - who has gained a fulltime teaching role in Broome.

·       Mrs Kilburn - who is retiring and going to enjoy the caravanning lifestyle

·       Mr Kilburn - who is retiring and going to enjoy the caravanning lifestyle

·       Mrs Mehan – who is very excited to welcoming a little new addition to her family

·       Mrs Campbell – who has gained a fulltime teaching role in Jurien Bay

·       Mrs Truesdale - who has gained a fulltime teaching role in Jurien Bay

·       Mrs Offer- who joined us originally as part of the flying squad and stayed on for the year, and is going home to Geraldton.

·       Mr Lyons- who is moving back home to Mandurah.

Each of these talented teachers and support staff has made a commitment to the school community and most importantly to our students, and as such we have greatly enjoyed and appreciated their contributions. Good luck in your next adventure.

Class Lists for 2023

Our student lists will be posted up on the school notice board near the canteen on Friday the 27 January 2023 at Midday. This enables us to make changes and adjustments as necessary with movement over the Christmas period.

Languages in 2023

As part of our commitment to a single language and a continuation of current languages, in 2023, all of the Year 3-6 students at Newman Primary will be undertaking a language program focusing on Chinese- Mandarin, through Meg languages. Using video-conference technology, the Meg Chinese program broadcasts its China-based teachers directly into the classroom at the same times each week for live and interactive lessons. Mandarin is the most widely spoken language in the world and Australia has a rich history of Chinese immigration, resulting in the diverse multicultural reputation Australia has today. For a young Australian deciding on an additional language, no language will provide as much opportunity as Mandarin. We look forward to this aspect of our curriculum in 2023.

Goodbye and Good Luck

It is the time of the year for some families to leave our school community to head off in different directions, I feel certain you will take great memories of a vibrant town and a proactive and welcoming school community. Good luck.

On behalf of the staff, I would like to wish everyone safe travels, an enjoyable break and a wonderful New Year. We look forward to seeing all students on Wednesday 1 February 2023.

Have a happy and safe holiday. Merry Christmas Everyone.

Planning for 2023

We are currently engaged in the planning process for 2023. Part of this planning needs to start with our potential class structures which are based on projected school numbers.

We are requesting that families inform the front office as soon as possible if they know that their children will not be returning to Newman Primary School in 2023. This will give us a more realistic idea of the number of students we need to cater for next year. It also assists with budgeting, as our school funding allocation is based upon student numbers.

The following are the guidelines around class sizes: Kindergarten - 20 students, Pre-primary - 27 students in a purpose-built centre, Year 1-3 - 24 students and Year 4-6 - 32 students.

If we have multi-age classes, this number generally drops by 1 or 2 students. Often parents believe that single stream classes are ‘better’, however multi age classes are just as good, with great teaching relationships and practice being the key to children’s schooling. It is important to realise that even in a class that is a single year group, the academic, social and emotional differences can be as diverse as a multi-age class.

If you are leaving town in the coming weeks or at the end of the year, please send in an email to newman.ps@education.wa.edu.au or contact our front office on 9154 3900. This information will greatly assist our planning for 2023.

Reports

All reports K-6 will be emailed using the email address we have on file. If you wish to have a hard copy, please email newman.ps@education.wa.edu.au as soon as possible. Remember, the link you have been emailed will be ‘live’ for four weeks, so download for future reference.

Attendance comment in reports

Student reports will include an attendance comment which clearly states the WA Education Department’s view on the impact of student attendance on learning. This percentage is based upon student attendance at the end of Week 6, Term 4; so it may have altered since that time. The following wording has been adapted from the Department documents and coloured sections may be utilised.

End of Year Concert

AWESOME Arts Creative Challenge

Congratulations to our Year 3 & 4 students who have produced so exceptional art in the last two weeks.

Creative Challenge is AWESOME’s core education program. AWESOME recruits a team of amazing, professional artists to undertake a one or two-week residency within a partner school or community. The artists facilitate process driven, creative workshops, based on a theme, with a select group of participants. The workshops require the participants undertake research, conceptual development and creation of an artwork, or artworks which celebrate their unique identity and the community in which they live.
