Newman Primary School

Newsletter: Term 4 Issue 1

Principal's Message

I would like to welcome all of our existing families back to Newman PS in Term 4 and a warm welcome to our new families who have joined us. Our first assembly was hosted by the student leadership team and what a wonderful job they have been doing. Congratulations to all award recipients on the day, you have made a great start to the term.

R U Ok day was held in Week 1 where parents, students and staff participated in a special assembly and a range of activities including community stalls. Well done to all those that made the day happen. A special mention to Mrs. Amie Leggett and the wellbeing team who organized this event.

Last Friday was the Bloody Slow Cup assembly. This moving event was well led by our student leaders and supported by our School board, P&C, Newman Police, Maori Haka and families of the fallen officers.

First thing in the Morning

All students from years 1- 6 are asked to drop their bag off at the classroom and move up to the undercover area for a play, chat with friends or just sit and watch. Supervision is provided every morning from 7.45am, students are then released at 8.00am to their classrooms which are opened up to allow students to settle for the day.

Enrolments

Do you know someone new to town? Do you have a young child who is eligible to attend Kindergarten in 2022? Please get in touch with our front office staff to discuss enrolment processes on 9154 3900.

Planning for 2023

I am currently engaged in the planning process for 2023. Part of this planning needs to start with our potential class structures which are based on projected school numbers.

I am requesting that families inform the front office as soon as possible if they know that their children will not be returning to Newman Primary School in 2023. This will give us a more realistic idea of the number of students we need to cater for next year. It also assists with budgeting, as our school funding allocation is based upon student numbers.

The following are the guidelines around class sizes: Kindergarten - 20 students, Pre-primary - 27 students in a purpose-built centre, Year 1-3 - 24 students and Year 4-6 - 32 students.

If we have multi-age classes, this number generally drops by 1 or 2 students. Often parents believe that single stream classes are ‘better’, however multi age classes are just as good, with great teaching relationships and practice being the key to children’s schooling. It is important to realise that even in a class that is a single year group, the academic, social and emotional differences can be as diverse as a multi-age class.

If you are leaving town in the coming weeks or at the end of the year, please send in an email to newman.ps@education.wa.edu.au or contact our front office on 9154 3900. This information will greatly assist our planning for 2023.

2023 Student Placement Requests

If you believe your child has particular considerations regarding class placement for 2023 please contact Chris Sheridan directly by, letter or email at christopher.sheridan@education.wa.edu.au All requests will be treated with complete confidentiality and will be taken into consideration; however, there are no guarantees. In structuring classes there are many influencing factors that will be considered including friendships and class dynamics.

Requests received after Friday 25 November 2022 will not be able to be considered.

Class Attendance Award Room 22

Congratulations to Room 22 on winning the class attendance award.

This shows the commitment of families and students and a reminder about the importance if attending school everyday unless your child is sick.

Art News

This Semester in Art, students have been exploring the Performing Arts through Drama. We have learned about some important elements of Drama that help to make our stories come alive on stage and are currently using our knowledge of these to devise our own dramas based on familiar stories we have read in class. Drama is about working as a team and being able to get creative, to build on these skills we love playing Drama games with our friends where we have to think fast, use our imagination and be flexible with our ideas. The most exciting part of Drama this semester has definitely been the dressing up! Mrs Leggett has created a costume cupboard full of exciting costumes and props for us to use as we explore our characterisation and narrative.

Bloody Slow Assembly

On behalf of Newman Primary School, we would like to thank the community, special guests, the New Zealand Haka team, WA Police Pipe band, Constable Care, Police Legacy, Police officers and family members of the Police who tragically lost their lives on Australia Day, 2001 here in Newman. WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.
