Principal's Report

Year 4 Flexible Classrooms

For our year 4 team of students and teachers 2020 has started with a burst of colour, collaboration, choice and comfort.

Four classrooms in our original Q Block have been transformed with the purchase of new flexible furniture creating dynamic, fun and inspiring learning environments.

Flexible seating is a great way to prepare students for life in the real world after school. Flexible learning spaces encourage active learning and freedom of choice. Learning opportunities are expanded. Students can work in small groups, brainstorm ideas on whiteboard tables or have a discussion as a whole class.

Thank you to our generous P&C who contributed funds towards this project that has our year 4 students and teachers excited about their teaching and learning for 2020.

Natalie Hanlon

Assistant Principal

Our school’s focus is to provide a learning environment which allows students to be self-regulated, guided, inspired and challenged. Our goal is to assist and support students to find the joy in learning, to build their skills and understanding and to make sense of their world. Our aim is to employ teaching practices to encourage and support students to be constructive, self-regulated learners who are confident and creative individuals, with the personal resources for future success and wellbeing. – Ref: School Excellence Framework 2014.

Thanks so much to Ms Natalie Hanlon for coordinating and ordering our new year 4 flexible furniture and for her consultation with the year 4 teachers and students late last year to ensure that we had an amazing innovative learning environment for our year 4 students this year. Ms Hanlon has also surveyed the students and taken some lovely pictures below. As the P &C have donated $38,000 for this initiative, we wanted to share our appreciation with all of our parents who helped raise the funds.

Manly Zone Swimming Carnival

Harbord Public School had a great number of representatives at the Manly Zone Swimming Carnival on Friday 13th March. All of the students participated with pride and swam their personal best. It was a fantastic day out in the sun next to the pool trying to compete for a place in the regional level. Congratulations to all those students who qualified for this level. Special thanks to Mr Holmes, Mrs St Pierre and Miss Norwood who acted as officials and supported our Harbord students throughout the day.

Teaching & Learning Update - STEM 2L with Lego Robotics

Year 2 Students have been developing their computational thinking skills using Bluebots and Dash robots, integrating digital technology with spelling and maths. Students are coding the Bluebot to spell words and give directions to follow a path.

Students  have been working collaboratively exploring Dash robots. They have been using apps to create different behaviours such as moving in different directions, navigating objects, dancing and speaking.

NAPLAN 2020

Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will sit for the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) test in May.  The assessments are an opportunity for students to demonstrate what they have learned in class. The NAPLAN test results and the student reports are released in September and provide information about student achievement that can be used to inform teaching and learning programs. NAPLAN tests provide point-in-time information regarding student progress in literacy and numeracy. Harbord PS will continue with NAPLAN on paper before NAPLAN Online becomes mandatory. More information can be found at:  https://www.nap.edu.au

Respecting Our Neighbours

I have unfortunately had complaints from some of our local residents in Corella Street that our parents are parking in their driveways and blocking access before and after school, sometimes for an extended period. Even more distressing is that a number of the residents have been abused and sworn at for asking them to move their cars.  I have been given the list of car models and registration numbers and will not publish them, however, I have asked the Northern Beaches Council to send rangers to patrol Corella Street and Wyadra. Sadly, we still also have parents who are abandoning their cars in the middle of our Kiss and Drop Zone. Please consider the safety of our students and our local residents when parking and collecting your child/ren. Thanks for your assistance with this.

Student Leadership Camp

Last week, our student leadership team attended the NBLA (Northern Beachers Learning Alliance) student leadership camp.  Leaders from across our region participated in team building and cooperative exercises.  Our leaders, engaged in a leadership project looking at an area of the school they thought could be improved.  I was impressed by their initiative and creative ways to problem solve.

Scripture/Ethics

Firstly, to keep our students and community safe, we have made the decision to cancel Scripture and Ethics class for the remainder of the term.  We thank our volunteers for the time they give to our students and look forward to seeing them back with us sometime soon.

In the meantime, no changes to SRE (Special Religious Education) and SEE (Special Education in Ethics) classes will be made for the rest of the term.  Changes to these classes will be accommodated for term 2 in preparation for when classes resume.  If you would like to change your child’s SRE/SEE placement please return the attached form below to the office by Friday 27 March (week 9).  Any forms received after this date will be kept for changes to be made in Term Three.  Currently, there is no year 1 Ethics option.  We will inform year 1 families if and when these classes become available.

Contacting the School

Parents are reminded that their first point of contact is their classroom teacher. Sometimes matters can seem big and they can be easily resolved with a quick conversation with your classroom teacher. Your classroom can be contacted through the school office via email or phone, or pop in to make a mutually convenient appointment.

ICT Contract

In line with our Positive Behaviour for Learning processes, we have developed a contract for students in year 1 to year 6 to outline how they can successfully engage with information and communication technologies.  In class, teachers have been discussing this contract with students.  We ask that when this contract is sent home, that you do the same.  At the bottom of the contract is a place for both parents and students to sign.  At Harbord Public School, we want to teach our students how to be respectful and responsible digital citizens through clear expectations and guidelines.  While Kindergarten do engage in some technology use in the classroom, they are not required to sign this contract.

With the increasing changes in technology, our students have access to many devices.  However, in the classroom, the technology students have access to must be for educational purposes only.  At Harbord PS, students are not to have access to their own smart devices between school hours, this includes smart watches.  In addition, if a student brings an item of value to school, they need to be mindful of keeping it safe.  We ask parents to assist us in these measures to ensure that distractions in classrooms are minimised and that student learning is optimised through the educational and teacher monitored use of technology.

Learning in Year 1

Each fortnight I will showcase some of the great learning happening across K-2. This week I had the pleasure of visiting year 1 to see what was happening during their English lessons. Students in year 1 have been exploring different themes within texts. 1G were reading Stanley Paste, a wonderful book by Aaron Blabey. 1S were also ready a book written by Aaron Blabey called Noah Dreary.  Children learnt from both books it does not matter if you are different to others:  we are all unique and special in our own way.  In 1F students were practising their fluency and expression when reading. In pairs they recorded each other reading and provided feedback. It was wonderful to see they enjoyment of reading they shared with each other.

World Water Day - Friday 20th March

We are requesting your generosity to raise money for our World Water Day charity. Last year children held cake stalls on the weekend, did chores for extra money and many students sacrificed a treat from the canteen to donate their money to communities in East Timor. Families, we hope you can give up a coffee or spare a few gold coins for this great cause.

The money provides filtration units that allow locals to purify their water using natural materials available in their area. Last year the students were proud of the difference they were able to make.

We will display a record of the funds raised as we collect them. Class teachers will take the donations from students from today on.

Total money collected last year was $3446. En Avant Harbord!

If your family would like to make a tax-deductable donation, please follow the instructions below:

P&C News

We are hoping to be able to go ahead with our AGM and general meeting on April 1st. However, the evolving COVID-19 situation may change things for us. We will be updating our current members via email as things progress. If you were planning to come along and would like to be informed of any changes, email me president@harbordpandc.com.au and, for 50 cents membership fee, I’ll add you to our mailing list.

Our sub-committees have been working extremely long hours to ensure the ongoing viability of our P&C businesses and we thank you for your support and patience over the next few weeks. The safety of your children and our paid staff are our priority right now.

Enormous gratitude to Marg Kaye, Rebecca Isaacs, Jo Denman, Louise Boreham and Kara McMillan for the work they are putting into preparing our OOSH service for all the challenges that may be ahead. And to Heidi Reuttinger and Nick Richter for preparing the Canteen and Uniform shop. These parents are going above and beyond for the good of our community.

All of our upcoming P&C fundraising and social events are now on hold for the foreseeable future.

Once again, thanks for your support during this difficult time.
