Principal's Message

Welcome

It is with great excitement that I welcome all our 2023 students, staff and families to our new school year at Newman Primary School. It is a pleasure to see many familiar faces about the school and to meet new families. It has been a smooth start to the school year with students happy and engaged.

It was a pleasure to see the pride and the preparation that has been completed by our staff to ensure we are ready for students. Many thanks to the behind the scenes work of our office staff, our gardener, our cleaners, our teachers and all support staff who have worked enthusiastically to make the first days and weeks special for all of our students.

Curriculum 2023

Our staff will continue to deliver high quality curriculum to students as we work towards our vision for all students at Newman Primary School.

At Newman Primary School we are committed to providing a holistic, relevant and targeted education for each child that will provide them with a strong foundation for future learning in a rapidly changing and diverse society.

As detailed in our 2021- 2023 Business Plan, our focus areas are:

1) Growth for Students

2) Growth for Staff

3) Growth for Community Partnerships

Our detailed operational planning reflects our intention to continue with quality programs such as Talk 4 Writing and InitiaLit whilst in 2023 we are introducing Spelling Mastery for our Year 3-6 students. We will continue our work with Meg languages to deliver Chinese mandarin to our upper primary cohorts. After it’s success in 2022, we are supplementing our health and wellbeing program utilising the Resilience Project. The four key pillars of this program are: Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness and Emotional Literacy. Payment for the student Resilience Journal can me made at the front office for those who have not done so yet.

If you have any queries

Our priority is always your child and in developing a close relationship with our school community where we all work together to provide the best educational opportunities for all children at Newman Primary School. Please remember to make yourself known to your child’s class teacher and don’t hesitate to seek clarification on any questions you may have in the coming weeks. If further clarification is needed or you would like to discuss other areas, please do not hesitate to contact me.

School Board

I look forward to our first School Board meeting soon; however, would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the work our School Board has completed in 2022 with Mrs Jodi Wright as Chairperson. Our school community celebrates the contributions of all Board members and deeply thanks them for their service. Whilst our 2023 membership is yet to be finalised, I am looking forward to our first meeting. I would like to invite parents to consider nominating to serve on our school board. For further information please contact myself on 9154 3900. Together we Grow!

2023 Student Leaders

Meet some of our new teachers!

Miss Mahalia Odquin

Hi, my name is Mahalia Odquin, and I am teaching Year 6 this year at Newman Primary. I have recently moved up from Perth but grew up in Darwin, N.T. and Denham, Shark Bay during my primary years. I graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2021 with a Bachelor of Education (Primary). I am always keen to learn new things and have new experiences. For example, I am currently trying to teach myself how to play the piano, I am also trying to learn Dutch, and I played my very first game of basketball at the Newman Rec centre just the other week! I am so excited to have the opportunity to teach at Newman Primary as it has always been a dream of mine to deliver quality education to students in remote areas of Australia. So far, I am loving being a part of this special community and learning about Newman and the Pilbara region.

Miss Maggie O'Neill

Hello! My name is Maggie O’Neill, and I am so excited to be teaching my first class in Year 1 Room 6!

I graduated from Murdoch University with a Bachelor of Early Childhood and Primary Education, in 2022. I believe in equitable opportunities for all children, and my personal philosophy of education is based on children’s rights and advocating for them. My partner and our three children have just moved from Perth to Newman and we are eager to explore the beautiful Pilbara region. Some things I enjoy: travelling to new places, hiking, swimming, reading, camping, music, art and trying new food. Thank you for welcoming me to the Newman Primary School community.

Mr Sam Curtis

Hi, my name is Sam Curtis and I have recently moved to Newman from Perth. I will be working in Room 2 Year 3 this year. I take pride in helping students reach their goals and provide the support needed to develop confident learners. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time so far in Newman and have enjoyed the community feeling of the town. I am excited about the year ahead at Newman Primary School.
