Principal's Report

Tuesday 7th March 2023

Hello Everyone,

Last Friday we held the school athletics carnival. Thank you so much to everyone who came along to cheer and to help out on the day. Although it was a very cool start, the weather was kind to us, and I think that the children had a great day. I love watching them compete and the way they support each other. Thanks once again to Hayley Saunders who works extremely hard behind the scenes to make these days happen.

On Friday night, FOS held a Welcome BBQ. It was lovely to see the new parents come along and mix with our school community. We are actively seeking people to join our parent committee. We would love your input on parent/school functions as well as new ideas. Please let your classroom teacher or the office know if you can give us a little of your time.

Next week we are undergoing an OH&S audit conducted by an external audit company. You will notice that there is some new signage at the school (e.g. the No smoking or vaping signs on the front gates). These are required to be placed at entrances of all schools now.

I have met with a representative from Macedon Ranges Solar to get a quote to start the process to add solar panels to the school. This project is completely funded by the money raised from the fete last year. Thank you again, for all of your hard work. We will undertake a two-part installation process, with half the panels installed this year and the second half of the panels installed in 2025. Even with half of the panels in, we should see a significant reduction in the amount that we currently pay for electricity. This is such a wonderful project and a great example of the difference we can make to our school with the support of the community. It will be the gift that keeps on giving into the future.

Another project has been completed and the new outdoor reading room (funded by a generous gift from one of our families, and some of the proceeds from the fete), was officially opened by our School Captains Lachie and Wil yesterday. There was a lot of cheering as they cut the ribbon. The children have been very happy to sit in there during break times and read quietly. There are some photos in this newsletter.

Garden Club has commenced at the school, and every Wednesday at lunch time, the children can help down at the veggie gardens. Thanks to Jane Honey for running this. Some of the vegetables grown will be used in a cooking program and some will be available for sale to the parents, via a stall to be run by the students. I will let you know when this is happening.

I have extended the period for school Council nominations by 48 hours. If you are interested in being on the School Council, please submit a nomination by 4pm Wednesday 8th March.

Don’t forget to let your teacher or the office know if your preference is to receive a short version of the newsletter via paper. We are trying hard to reach all parents with news about the school.

Kind Regards,

Trish

School Council Elections

A school council plays a vital part in the running and success of a school. School councils have governance over areas such as Strategic Planning, Finances (including fundraising), Buildings and Grounds and Marketing. It is the role of a school councillor to be informed and represent the views of the parent body. We have three positions vacant on the SC this year.

Please consider nominating (self-nominating) or nominating someone else for the role (the person you are nominating will need to agree and sign the nomination form).

The nomination period will be open until Monday 6th March at 4pm and nomination forms were sent home in a previous post or are available at the front office. I now call for nominations for the three vacant parent member seats.

The parent electorate includes each parent of a student at the school, except those who are Department employees engaged in work at, and for, the school. A parent of a student at the school, who is a department employee but does not work at or for the school is included in the parent electorate. These parents are recognised on council as ‘Department employee parents’.

‘Parent’ includes a guardian or person who is liable to maintain or has the actual custody of a student of the school.

A person is ineligible for election or co-option to the school council if the person:

•    is or has been insolvent under administration within the last three years. Note: Insolvent under administration includes a person who is an undischarged bankrupt

•    is of unsound mind

•    has been found guilty or convicted of an indictable offence or an offence that would be an indictable offence if it had been committed in Victoria

•    is a registrable offender within the meaning of the Sex Offenders Registration Act 2004

•    is subject to any medical condition that makes them unable to fulfil the role of a council member

•    ceases to be eligible for election or co-option to their membership category.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

OH & S Volunteer / Parent Induction Booklet

Parent Volunteers

All parent volunteers are required to complete an OH & S induction, along with Child Safety procedures. If at any time you will be participating in any school camps or excursions, reading with students or helping in the classroom, an induction will need to be completed. You can find the Child Safe Policies on our Website, and attached below is the induction documents and child safety form to be signed and returned to the office with a copy of your Working With Children's Check. Unfortunately, this is the process we have to follow to ensure the safety of all students. We appreciate your patience and thank you in advance to help us get through this process.

Student Wellbeing:

Please keep an eye on SeeSaw as teachers will be posting some information about our new wellbeing initiative, Skodel. After trialling with the grade 4/5/6’s last year, we are now moving to embed this wellbeing tool across the whole school.

Mount Macedon Primary School has its own 5-star chef!

For the past 8 months Harry has been travelling down to Woodend Bakery with Olivia to learn how to bake in a professional kitchen. Harry has a passion for baking and has learnt many new skills from fancy piping to making a Genoise Swiss Roll. Harry often shares his treats with his class and very appreciative staff! We are hoping that Harry may look at setting up a little side business so the whole community can enjoy his delicious creations! Watch this space!

MMPS Update by School Reporter Harriet

Hello everyone, welcome to the fifth school report of the year.

On Friday the third of March, We had our Athletics carnival at Dixon field in Gisborne. Everyone showed amazing and awesome sportsmanship and strength, especially those who did the 800m and the 1500m run. Thank you to the parents that came and helped! It was a wonderful day and we also want to thank Ms Saunders who helped get everything all set up!

Currently the grade 4s are undertaking bike ed and have been giving super positive reviews. The class is loving the education about bike safety they are learning. They are enjoying being taught by Mr Ewels who has many years of Bike Education experience. The program runs through many elements of safe bike use and will finish with the very exciting Williamstown Bike Ride later this term.

The grand opening of the reading room was amazing! Our School Captains introduced the students to the new area and cut the ribbon. You can come and read during recess and lunch for as long as you would like.

Have a great week everyone,

Harriet

MMPS Athletics Carnival

Last Friday 3rd of March was our MMPS Athletics Carnival. The day started off quite drizzly and cool, but fortunately warmed up to be a lovely day. It was a fun day for the whole school, and a great day for the students to showcase their sports skills. We started off with the seniors completing their track events in the morning - 100m, 200m, 800m and 1500m, and the juniors partaking in some fun novelty events on the field. Activities included ball throw, sack races, hula hoops, hurdles, soccer dribble through witches hats and target throwing with bean sacks. From all accounts, they had a great morning playing games, warming up and practising their coordination and sporting skills. In the afternoon it was time for the juniors to partake in the running events, whilst the seniors competed in their field events such as discuss, shot put and long jump. The winner of the day (Kulin or Mitchell) has not yet been revealed, however we will soon know by the end of the week so stay tuned!

Art at MMPS

Our current focus in Art is colour and shape, where students have been putting their painting and cutting skills to practise. They have been creating works of art inspired by Pete Cromer. Pete Cromer is an Australian artist who is well known for his beautiful collages of animals.

Classes F/1, 1/2 & 2/3 were given the shapes of an animal to paint, carefully cut out and then worked step by step to layer and glue the pieces into place.

Classes 3/4 & 5/6 had to identify the shapes needed in the animal they chose and trace each shape before continuing with the process.

Below are photos of some very creative and colourful pieces of art, they have done a fabulous job!

STEM Update

Last week in Stem the students were conducting experiments to explore the density of water. They created their own salt water with different levels of salt dissolved into it, to explore how it acts in different situations. They used eggs and food colouring to identify the different densities in water samples and looked at real world situations where water density is important to understand. See below for some photos of their experimenting in action!

New Book News

Andrea Mizzi, a parent at the school has published a wonderful children's book we would like to share with you. The book is called "Marshall the Brave Knight",  and teaches children the importance of personal safety communicated through Marshall a curious and fun-loving meerkat.

As the weekend approaches, MARSHALL the meerkat wants to take his beloved robot kite out to play. Before Marshall sets out, Marshall recalls the 'five must dos' focusing on his personal safety and aided by his mother. Marshall remembers the 'five must dos' and at the same time becomes a fearless knight ready to conquer and ward off any fiery dragons or any perils that may lay ahead.

This book has been beautifully illustrated by the talented Dita Putri, and is designed to assist parents, caregivers and teachers to start the conversation with a child on how to respond when faced with an unsafe situation and in turn reducing the likelihood of a child entering into a dangerous setting. This book was compiled to equip children with the knowledge to make safe choices and decisions.

It is with the knowledge and certainly that we can empower our children and in turn increase their confidence and resilience to explore and experience the world around us.

Discussion points are available for parents, caregivers and teachers.

You can purchase here its free delivery world wide.

Congratulations Andrea on a wonderful achievement, we wish you great success with your new book.

Sushi Monday's - extended order cut off time

Just a quick note to say that we have extended the cut off time for ordering Sushi now to 9.15am on Monday mornings instead of 9am. We are hoping this gives parents a little more flexibility when placing orders, especially at the start of the week which we know can be busy.

Lunch Orders

Thank you to everyone that has jumped on board Flexischools to order lunches from the Red Door Cafe, it's been a great success so far and we look forward to seeing more specialty items added to the menu soon.

Lunch Orders from Red Door cafe in Macedon can now be ordered on line via the Flexischools App. This App can be downloaded on to your SMART phone, see below link for instructions:

https://www.mtmacedonps.vic.edu.au/source/AAFlexischools-orientation-flyer.pdf

We will still run the paper bag and cash system for a few weeks more to allow for any teething issues and give parents time to organise registration with Flexischools.

Hats in Term 1, 2023

Just a reminder to ensure that students have their hats to wear at school during recess and lunchtimes, as well as any other outdoor activities they may be participating in. It is important that we are all being sun smart and ensuring our children are protected from the harmful UV light that is at it's highest peak during the months of August to April, where UV index levels regularly reach 3 or above. Please also remember to name your children's hats as they quite often are lost, misplaced or left in the playground and it is handy to know who the hat belongs to!  Spotted at recess today were some students playing down ball in their hats!

Guitar Lessons 2023

Aaron Moar has been teaching guitar students at Mount Macedon Primary School for the last 8 years. He is keen to meet some new students who are interested in learning how to play, and continue working with current students for 2023. Aaron is a qualified teacher and has been teaching guitar for over 15 years. He conducts group lessons at the school, and teaches students of all levels and classes. His lessons are fun and interactive, where the students learn to play both modern and traditional tunes to practise their skills and technique. If you would like to enquire about guitar lessons for your child, please contact Aaron on 0438 177 764 or email: aaronmoar@infinitesound.com.au or see flyer below.

Ranges Music Network

The Ranges Music Network is very excited to be bigger and better at Mount Macedon Primary this year!  We have some exciting term-based performance and project activities planned in addition to our Group and Individual programs.

We'd also like 2023 to be the year of the bands -- with Classic Rock Band and Drum Squad taking the stage from 3:40-4:20pm after school each Wednesday.  If you are interested in learning an instrument while playing in the band or building on the technique and musicality you're developing in your group and individual lesson we'd love to have you.

THE 39 STEPS

Directed by John Rowland (Too Many Crooks & The Wrong Box)

Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Fruity melodrama and you have the intriguing, thrilling, riotous and unmissable comedy. The show hurtles a notorious fugitive and a spellbound blonde from a London music hall north by northwest to Scotland’s most remote highlands. Will they save Britain from a den of devious spies? A cast of six actors plays over 25 characters in this fast-paced tale of an ordinary man on an extraordinarily entertaining adventure. The 39 Steps contains every single legendary scene from the award-winning movie — including the chase on the Flying Scotsman, the escape on the Forth Bridge, the bi-plane crash and the sensational death-defying finale in the London Palladium.
