Principal's Report

Tuesday 14th March 2023

Hello Everyone,

I hope that you all had a wonderful long weekend, sharing good times with your family.

Nominations for our school council have now closed. I'd like to thank Simon Keating, Katrina Monaghan and Ben Wilde for agreeing to join our SC. Many thanks to Cameron Howlett and Rachel Jex, both of whom have spent several years as school councillors. They have worked hard to represent parent perspectives and to ensure that the school is governed in the best possible way. It has been an absolute pleasure working with them.

Tomorrow our grade 3 and 5 students commence NAPLAN. It is being held much earlier this year. The timetable is;

Wednesday 15th -Writing at 9am. This year Grade 5 students will write their stories online and Grade 3 students will submit their writing on paper.

Thursday 16th – Reading at 9am and Language Conventions (spelling, grammar, and punctuation) at 11.30am. All students will do these assessments online.

Friday 17th – Numeracy – online at 9am.

Extra teachers and support staff will be available to make sure that the children are not feeling anxious. Please remember that this group of assessments is just a snapshot in time and classroom teachers, who gather evidence about your child’s learning regularly through the year will have the best picture of their achievement levels.

Tomorrow the school is also undergoing a half day OH&S assessment from an external company employed by DET.

Congratulations to Sam and Eliza Ransome who both received First Place prizes at the Woodend Art Show. We are very proud of them both. I have included a video link in the newsletter so that you can see their amazing pieces of work and hear what the judges had to say about them here. Great work Sam and Eliza.

The Williamstown Bike Ride is on Friday 31st March and we really need your help. If you are free on that day, we’d love to have you come and ride with us.

Our Friends of the School group is seeking a leadership team to guide them through this year. A parent group is required to have a president and secretary (neither of the jobs is very onerous) and if you have the time we would also love to hear from you. Each event is planned and run by different groups of parents and so the roles involve calling the meetings etc.

Have a lovely week.

Kind Regards,

Trish

OH & S Volunteer / Parent Induction Booklet

Parent Volunteers

All parent volunteers are required to complete an OH & S induction, along with Child Safety procedures. If at any time you will be participating in any school camps or excursions, reading with students or helping in the classroom, an induction will need to be completed. You can find the Child Safe Policies on our Website, and attached below is the induction documents and child safety form to be signed and returned to the office with a copy of your Working With Children's Check. Unfortunately, this is the process we have to follow to ensure the safety of all students. We appreciate your patience and thank you in advance to help us get through this process.

MMPS Easter Raffle

With Term 1 well under way, we are approaching the Annual Easter Raffle.

Each classroom will have their own designated tub to place your much appreciated donations.

You can donate anything from Easter eggs, colouring books, story books, bunny ears, baskets (we even get a few tooth brushes in there too)!

Raffle books will be coming home with your children next week.

If possible, please bring any small containers to create your garden e.g eggshells, seashells, saucers, cups and a spoon to scoop the soil into your container. Be imaginative about the small container – think reuse, reduce, recycle. Soil/potting mix and small plants provided. Bring masks and gloves if you want. Family groups welcome.

MMPS Athletics Carnival

Congratulations to Mitchell house winning the School Athletics carnival, a great effort! It was a fun day for the whole school, and a great day for the students to showcase their sports skills. Well done to all of the students who participated to make the day a great success.

Chess Club

On Tuesdays, as part of our Wellbeing program, some of our students spend the last half of their lunch time playing chess. Usually we hold these classes inside, however today was such a lovely warm day,  the students set up on the STEM room deck to make most of the Autumn weather. See below for some photos of the students enjoying their Chess.

New Book News

Andrea Mizzi, a parent at the school has published a wonderful children's book we would like to share with you. The book is called "Marshall the Brave Knight",  and teaches children the importance of personal safety communicated through Marshall a curious and fun-loving meerkat.

As the weekend approaches, MARSHALL the meerkat wants to take his beloved robot kite out to play. Before Marshall sets out, Marshall recalls the 'five must dos' focusing on his personal safety and aided by his mother. Marshall remembers the 'five must dos' and at the same time becomes a fearless knight ready to conquer and ward off any fiery dragons or any perils that may lay ahead.

This book has been beautifully illustrated by the talented Dita Putri, and is designed to assist parents, caregivers and teachers to start the conversation with a child on how to respond when faced with an unsafe situation and in turn reducing the likelihood of a child entering into a dangerous setting. This book was compiled to equip children with the knowledge to make safe choices and decisions.

It is with the knowledge and certainly that we can empower our children and in turn increase their confidence and resilience to explore and experience the world around us.

Discussion points are available for parents, caregivers and teachers.

You can purchase here its free delivery world wide.

Congratulations Andrea on a wonderful achievement, we wish you great success with your new book.

Sushi Monday's - extended order cut off time

Just a quick note to say that we have extended the cut off time for ordering Sushi now to 9.15am on Monday mornings instead of 9am. We are hoping this gives parents a little more flexibility when placing orders, especially at the start of the week which we know can be busy.

Lunch Orders

Thank you to everyone that has jumped on board Flexischools to order lunches from the Red Door Cafe, it's been a great success so far and we look forward to seeing more specialty items added to the menu soon.

Lunch Orders from Red Door cafe in Macedon can now be ordered on line via the Flexischools App. This App can be downloaded on to your SMART phone, see below link for instructions:

https://www.mtmacedonps.vic.edu.au/source/AAFlexischools-orientation-flyer.pdf

We will still run the paper bag and cash system for a few weeks more to allow for any teething issues and give parents time to organise registration with Flexischools.

Hats in Term 1, 2023

Just a reminder to ensure that students have their hats to wear at school during recess and lunchtimes, as well as any other outdoor activities they may be participating in. It is important that we are all being sun smart and ensuring our children are protected from the harmful UV light that is at it's highest peak during the months of August to April, where UV index levels regularly reach 3 or above. Please also remember to name your children's hats as they quite often are lost, misplaced or left in the playground and it is handy to know who the hat belongs to!

Guitar Lessons 2023

Aaron Moar has been teaching guitar students at Mount Macedon Primary School for the last 8 years. He is keen to meet some new students who are interested in learning how to play, and continue working with current students for 2023. Aaron is a qualified teacher and has been teaching guitar for over 15 years. He conducts group lessons at the school, and teaches students of all levels and classes. His lessons are fun and interactive, where the students learn to play both modern and traditional tunes to practise their skills and technique. If you would like to enquire about guitar lessons for your child, please contact Aaron on 0438 177 764 or email: aaronmoar@infinitesound.com.au or see flyer below.

Ranges Music Network

The Ranges Music Network is very excited to be bigger and better at Mount Macedon Primary this year!  We have some exciting term-based performance and project activities planned in addition to our Group and Individual programs.

We'd also like 2023 to be the year of the bands -- with Classic Rock Band and Drum Squad taking the stage from 3:40-4:20pm after school each Wednesday.  If you are interested in learning an instrument while playing in the band or building on the technique and musicality you're developing in your group and individual lesson we'd love to have you.

THE 39 STEPS

Directed by John Rowland (Too Many Crooks & The Wrong Box)

Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Fruity melodrama and you have the intriguing, thrilling, riotous and unmissable comedy. The show hurtles a notorious fugitive and a spellbound blonde from a London music hall north by northwest to Scotland’s most remote highlands. Will they save Britain from a den of devious spies? A cast of six actors plays over 25 characters in this fast-paced tale of an ordinary man on an extraordinarily entertaining adventure. The 39 Steps contains every single legendary scene from the award-winning movie — including the chase on the Flying Scotsman, the escape on the Forth Bridge, the bi-plane crash and the sensational death-defying finale in the London Palladium.
