From the Principal, Ms Hanson

Congratulations Mrs Stanley!

It is with an incredible sense of pride that we congratulate our amazing Mrs Jane Stanley who has been successful, through merit selection, in gaining the Principal position at Brookvale Public School.

Mrs Stanley has been a highly integral member of the Beacon Hill community for over 16 years, wearing numerous hats throughout her BHPS journey- classroom teacher, Assistant Principal, Deputy Principal and Relieving Principal. Incredibly talented and hard-working, she has passionately shared her enthusiasm for teaching and learning with so many. A truly special educator, she touches the lives of all she meets with her warm, kind spirit, calm demeanor and incredible enthusiasm and love for educating young people. She is highly respected here at Beacon Hill and will leave behind a legacy that is beyond measure. It is never easy to farewell those we hold dear to our hearts and we are all going to miss her very much. However, I know you will all join me in wishing her the very best as I couldn’t think of anybody more deserving of this fantastic career opportunity! We know she will embrace this new challenge and we couldn’t be more proud. Please note that the process, although complete, is currently within a ten day appeal period. At this stage, it is anticipated that Mrs Stanley will commence in her new role at the beginning of Term 3.

Student Leaders' Challenge Week & Pyjama Party Day

We are all looking forward to "Pyjama Party Day" TOMORROW, where we all get to come to school in our comfy, warm PJs. Our student leaders look forward to hosting a little disco party for our Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 on Friday as well.  We hope this will be a lovely way to end Term 2!

Our student leaders have done an exceptional job planning and leading their "Challenge Week" project this week. Lots of fun and excitement has been shared as well as a little bit of 'mostly' healthy class competition! We congratulate 6M on being the champion class of "Challenge Week" finishing with the highest point score.  We are sure they will enjoy their Pizza Party tomorrow!

Enormous thanks and congratulations to our wonderful student leaders who initiated this project as a way to strengthen connectedness across the school and give us all an opportunity to have some fun in the last week of Term 2! Well done leaders! I'm so proud of your efforts!

Kindness- it costs nothing but means everything!

You have, no doubt, at some point come across "Mount Lost Property" located right in the heart of the 4G

bagroom! I am sure you have wondered lately how the items from that region somehow magically make their way back to the village to be returned safely to their rightful (when labelled) owners each week!

Let me introduce you to Josie, Matilda and Kaitlyn- 3 very kind Year 5 students who identified a need at school, knew they had a strategy to help and ever so kindly offer their assistance to the office each week to provide a service to our BHPS students, returning lost items promptly to them and always with a smile!

We are so grateful to Josie, Matilda and Kaitlyn for their kindness and willingness to help others. It has not gone unnoticed and is certainly appreciated. Thank you Josie, Matilda and Kaitlyn, from everyone who has ever accidentally left belongings behind (and I'm pretty sure that covers everybody at some point ;-) ). What would we do without you? (Probably be cold!)

Year 4 Project Penguin

Our Year 4 students are very excited to be commencing Project Penguin this week. This Northern Beaches

Learning Alliance Project involves collaboration across local primary and high schools, Taronga Zoo, Manly

Environment Centre and Sydney Water. In 2020, in line with the Covid-19 restrictions in place, Project Penguin has needed to evolve, and as a result has gone virtual!

Through virtual inquiry based learning, our students will discover the challenges for the Little Penguins trying to survive in a changing urban environment. The framework of Design Thinking will guide their work and deepen their understanding of a creative process, supporting our students to create a film, display piece or performance to raise awareness of the plight of these cute little creatures. Thank you to Miss Gately and the year 4 teachers for coordinating our involvement in this project. Our students are certainly very excited about it and we look forward to them sharing their ideas!

Semester One Reporting to Parents

Parents and carers will receive their child’s Semester 1 report in digital format TODAY- Thursday 2 July 2020 from 3pm. Detailed information on how to access reports has been sent home via email (attachment and information is below for your reference as well).

This will be a simplified version of the report you normally receive and will not grade student achievement using the usual 5 point scale. Please be aware that all students may not have covered the same syllabus outcomes or content during this period. There will be a focus on the learning covered in English and Mathematics, along with a general comment which may provide information on other key learning areas and what can be done to support further learning growth.

Sentral Parent Portal Letter

Our semester 1 student reports will be published for parent access on our SENTRAL Parent Portal on Thursday 2nd July.

Your child's/children's reports are securely stored on the portal. Parents are able to download and/or print copies of their child's report at their convenience. As of 3pm Thursday 2nd July, your child's school report will be published and available online.

If you have NOT registered to access and use the Parent Portal, to view and download your child’s / children’s reports previously, you will need to reply to this email to be supplied with a unique access key and instructions to set up your personal access.

We attached a copy of the original letter with instructions that went home in 2019.

If you have previously accessed your child’s / children’s reports via SENTRAL Parent Portal the URL for continued access to the portal is: https://beaconhillps.sentral.com.au/portal You will need to log in using the email and password you set when you set up your access.

Please note, that all EALD reports for years 1 to 6, will be emailed out to families separately.

Tell Them From Me: Student Survey Term 2

Traditionally our school participates in the Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 and Term 3 each year. The survey is open for students in Years 4-6 to participate. The survey provides our school with valuablefeedback on what our students think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different waysthat teachers interact with them.At the end of this term we will be capturing student voice across our school by surveying arepresentative sample set from each class in Years 4-6. This will give us an opportunity to check-in with ourstudents. Especially as the COVID-19 crisis has presented unique challenges for students, teachers andparents across NSW. As we have now transitioned back to face-to-face learning, now is an opportunity tocheck-in on your students’ wellbeing and engagement during this extraordinary time. Please find attached theInformation and consent form for parents and carers. Please note: you only need to send back in the form ifyou do not want your child to take part in the survey.

Premier's Reading Challenge

The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is underway and goes through until August 28th 2020. The challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge for each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is available for all NSW students in Kindergarten to Year 9.

Go to the new PRC student website. There is a video on the PRC Support site that you can watch that demonstrates how to login, search for books and add them to your child's individual Student Reading Record (SRR).

A link to the Premier’s Reading Challenge website can be found in the

Student Portal under the Learning section.  Students are also able to add a link to the PRC in the My Link List section to make the PRC easier to find.

The URL to use is  https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/studentExperience.html#/

Students can access the PRC website using their Department of Education (DoE) username and password.  These are the same details a student would use to access the Student Portal and the computer network at school.  If you are unaware of your username and/or password, please contact your class teacher and ask for your Student Portal username and/or password.

We encourage as many students to partake in the challenge as possible. All students who participate will go into a class draw, with a prize for a student per class at the end of the challenge.

Please come and see me if you would like more information on the PRC or assistance in sourcing books.

This year we are asking all students in K-6 to log their own books to complete the challenge.

Happy reading!

Library News

Overdue books

It is fantastic that so many children have been reading during remote learning and are continuing to enjoy reading a variety of books now. This however has lead to us having a HUGE amount of overdue books.

Notes have gone home this week to remind you which books your children have borrowed out under their name. If they have been returned already please let me know either in person or or via email. If you can not find these books at home; please replace the book with a new copy and send it to the library or office OR you can pay for the book and we will re-purchase the book for others to enjoy.  The cost of the book is on the notice. Please bring the notice in with payment so that we can take it off the system.

Classes who return all over due books before the end of the term will  claim a small reward for their efforts.

Happy reading!

A Message to All Students in Christian Combined SRE

Hi everyone, thanks for joining me for a few minutes of Bible chat.

The book of Psalms is a book of poetry, many chapters of both short and longer writings, which provide peace and reflection for anyone who chooses to read them. Psalm 139 is one of the long ones. Verse 1 says: “You have looked deep into my heart lord, and you know all about me.” That’s a comforting thought I think, to know that God knows all about me! It means he knows what I need and where my heart is at. In SRE classes

with year 6, we talk about this verse in lesson 2. We learn that God knows us deeply and therefore he’s like a best friend.

This week, who don’t you take a few minutes each day to think about this verse. The graphic above (and the ones I provided in the last few weeks) can be printed in credit card size and carried around or hung on the fridge – a quick reminder that God is good.

Maybe you’d like to pray with me… “Dear Lord, I pray that you’ll be close to me today and every day, that I may get to know your goodness. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.” ?

Lunchbox Program

Lunch is on us

Need help with the kid’s lunches during school holidays or while schooling from home? What about your own lunch? Maybe an elderly relative or neighbour? In response to Covid-19, The Link Community Care will fill your lunchbox for free.

So what’s in your ‘LUNCHBOX’? Director of The Link Community Care Glenn Wysman said it was important to ensure the lunchbox was healthy. “We consulted local nutritionist Kelly Richardson, and as a result we’ve

decided to pack the lunchboxes with a sandwich, a drink, a piece of fruit and a snack - or two.”

Mr Wysman said they’ve also put in place provisions to ensure they abide by the strict rules governing social distancing and travel during Covid-19.

“We will be making it as safe as possible for those wanting a ‘LUNCHBOX’ by providing a drive through service, so people won’t have to leave their car.

Our drive through lunch centre is located at the Pittwater Sports Centre, 1525 Pittwater Road, Narrabeen, which is opposite the park where we typically stage ‘Carols by The Lake’ and ‘Eggs by the Lake’.

“Each ‘LUNCHBOX’ will be sufficient for one person, although families will be able to collect extra lunch boxes to ensure no one skips lunch.”

The Link Community Care ‘LUNCHBOX’ Program commences on Wednesday 15th April and will be available

Monday to Friday from 11am to 2pm as long as the need continues. A gold coin donation would be gratefully accepted but is not essential.

If you would like to support the Program, Mr Wysman outlined several options. “You can donate at www.link.org.au/community-care/

You can also drop off non-perishable grocery items to the Pittwater Sports Centre which will be packaged into hampers to help those in our community in most need.

“We also need volunteers to help pack and deliver the ‘LUNCHBOXES’.”

The Link Community Care will also be offering a home delivery service for the most vulnerable & the elderly who are unable to leave their home.

“These are unprecedented times”, said Mr Wysman. “But one thing I know about the Northern Beaches, is that we are a very supportive community and together we will get through this season.

“I would also like to acknowledge those who’ve come on board to help us run this program. Special appreciation to Mark & Gai Forrest owners of Pittwater Sports Centre and the organisations within the centre”.
