Bogangar Public School Newsletter

Term 3 Week 10, 2019

Principal Message - Mrs M Kelly

Dear Parents/Carers

As we count down the final week for Term 3 and begin to get excited about the upcoming holidays, I’d like to take this opportunity to reflect on the engaging learning experiences that have made Term 3 a busy yet memorable time.

We started off the term with a bang, the launch of PBL, Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) and will finish this week with our Year 5 and 6 students enjoying life at camp. However, throughout the term there were a number of big ticket whole school events, these included the Premiers Spelling Bee, Public Speaking, Book Week inclusive of Book Parade, Education Week inclusive of Book Fair, Grandparents Day and Jump Rope for Heart.

Numerous students have represented Bogangar Public School or participated in a raft of events locally and across the region  at events such as, Athletics, Debating, Spelling Bee, Public Speaking, Juraki Surf Festival, North Coast Creative Arts Camp, Byron Writers Festival, Family Centre Transition Program, and Tournament of the Minds, just to name a few. Congratulations to Sunny Hurworth who will be competing at the State Athletics Carnival in the 1500 metres and the twelve students who were selected to dance in the School Spectacular. Both events will be taking place in November.

Our school welcomed author Tristan Banks and the Storyboard Bus into our school as well as the Tweed Family Centre, Tweed Dental Service and continue to have the pleasure of weekly visits from Story Dogs.

Thank you to the students for always contributing to your learning, to teachers for the effort you apply to delivering learning experiences that engage our students and the parents and community who continually support the opportunities we aim to provide.

I hope everyone enjoys a restful, recharging break and we look forward to Term 4 recommencing with students on Monday 14th October 2019.

To assist you in planning for school activities happening in Term 4, a parent calendar is attached and a paper copy will be sent home with each family.

Thank you all for an awesome term.

2020 Staff Development Day

On behalf of the Bogangar Public School staff I am seeking the understanding and support of our parents and carers to reassign 2020 Term 4 SDD, Thursday 17th December 2020, to Wednesday 29th January 2020 so to have two consecutive SDDs. This first SDD, Tuesday 28th January 2020 is assigned to professional being undertaken with a cluster of local schools, Visible Learning. Therefore BPS would appreciate an addition SDD on site to focus on our local school specific professional learning for example mandatory training and preparation for the return of students on Thursday 30th January 2020.

There will be no loss of school days as the students will finish 2020 school year on Thursday 17th December 2020, not Wednesday 16th December 2020 as indicated on the NSW Department of Education school calendar.

Consultation has occurred at the last P&C meeting on Monday 16th September 2019 whereby the members present clarified understanding of the request and supported the reallocation of the 2020 Staff Development Day.

If you have any questions or require clarification of the above information then please feel free to contact me at the school.

A separate notice, (paper copy) will be sent home with each BPS family with the return slip seeking your support. Please return the slip by Term 4 Week 1 Friday 18th October 2019.

Thank you for your understanding.

NAPLAN

The school has received and will be forwarding home NAPLAN results with our Year 3 & 5 students who sat the test earlier in the year.

The students will be handed the sealed envelope and directed to open them with their parent and not before.

For Year 5 students on camp parents can collect at the school or ring and request their child’s results to be sent home with a younger sibling. Otherwise if not collected by Friday they will be sent home with students when they return home from camp.

SHADED OUTDOOR LEARNING SPACE

A shaded outdoor learning space has been constructed (at the end of C Block near the playground equipment) and is looking very cool and inviting, the next stage will be the planting of plants around the seating area.

An Environmental Trust Eco Schools grant along with school funds has enabled the joint project between the school and the P&C to occur.

Thank you to Katie Maccoll, Vanessa O’Brien, Cathy Llewellyn and Alyson McIntyre for their time and effort in the coordination of the structure. Also thank you to the Tweed Shire Council for the supply of plants that will be planted near our new shaded outdoor learning space.

2020 Enrolment Intentions

While this year hasn’t finished, our planning has commenced for 2020.

If you anticipate moving schools in the new year or know of anyone planning on joining the BPS community next year please let Ms Robinson in the front office know as soon as possible. 2020 student numbers will directly determine 2020 classes, teacher placement and school support.

SNIPPETS OF WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING AROUND BOGANGAR PUBLIC SCHOOL

K Waves - Staying Alive

This term, K Waves have been investigating all about ‘staying alive’ for our unit in science. We have been learning all about what we need to stay alive, our 5 senses and how we can look after plants and pets.

To learn more about the topic, K Waves planted some beans in our classroom. We put them into a special sunny spot in our classroom and had to remember to water them each afternoon.

Every few days we recorded our observations using our journals and noted the changes. We even drew some diagrams and labelled the changes. Some of our bean plants have grown to over 14 unifix cubes in length!

We love science in K Waves!

A huge thank you for the effort skipping and fundraising for the Jump Rope for Heart program this term. Together we raised an incredible $2694.23 and this money will all go towards vital heart research and education programs.

We’ve loved seeing so many smiling faces skipping on the playground and in sports lessons. Our Jump Off Day was a huge success, you can see a few action photos from the day below.

Here’s our school leaderboard, congratulations to our top fundraisers! Keep up the skipping and thanks again for the hard work!

Regional Athletics Carnival

Last Friday 20th September Bogangar PS had two students attend the Regional Athletics Carnival in Lismore.

Beau R (4L) finished 5th in the Junior Boys Long Jump and Sunny Hurworth (5/6O) placed 2nd in the 11 Years Boys 1500m.

Both of these results are incredible considering that our region consists of over 190 schools!

Sunny will now represent the North Coast Region at the State Athletics Championships in Sydney in November. An incredible achievement after making it to State for Cross Country earlier this year.

Well done!
