Term 2 Week 2, 2019

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

This term we have welcomed Ms Francesca Xavier who is our new Assistant Principal Support and teacher of KW. Ms Xavier is getting to know students in her class and the support unit and is a wonderful addition to our staff.

On the School Development Day staff participated in the Uplifting Australia teacher training. The training was in preparation for the programs we are implementing in conjunction with Uplifting Australia this year. Staff were enthused by the training and excited about providing the opportunity for our community. The program is focused on supporting families to develop strong relationships, which support the social and emotional wellbeing of children. Children in Year 2, Year 4 and Year 6 will have the opportunity to invite a parent to an afternoon workshop which will focus on introducing parents to lots of ideas and strategies which will support children’s development. Our involvement will also provide access to Family Connect resources which provide families with simple tools to talk and connect with each other in ways which are meaningful and significant. Look out for the resources and try the activities which support your family to have meaning conversations and to connect effectively as a family. This term the Family Connect resources will focus on listening, I plan to  focus on the skills myself and will be inviting groups of students to have a listening conversation with me each week.

On the last Friday of Term 1, our school captains led the ANZAC service to commemorate and remember the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.

It was a moving assembly and students from each class respectfully placed a wreath at the base of our school flag.

Thank you to the families that could join us and also to all of the families that donated the beautiful flowers for the wreaths.

Staff Development Day Term 2

Teachers Lift Off!

Term 2 is off to a great start, with all teachers participating in the Lift Off! workshop run by Uplifting Australia. Teachers were involved in a full day of professional development that focused on strengthening social and emotional well-being for our students.

Read about teachers thoughts of the day in the word art below!

 Lift Off! Schools programs are:
  • Unique – by providing experiences that engage and skill children and parents together
  • Manageable – giving school staff the skills, resources and support needed
  • Progressive – providing a developmental journey for students through their school life
  • Repeatable – allowing a school to embed social and emotional wellbeing for families into their annual school programming and culture

Pre School

Term 1

Term 1 has been a busy time for preschool this year. They have settled in well and have been busy in the lead up to Easter. One of the activities that the preschool participated in, was the whole school Easter Hat Parade. The children enjoyed being part of the 'big school' and these events are important for building connections between the preschool and the school community. Opportunities for preschool to be a part of whole school activities will happen in different ways throughout the year, as we understand the importance of the children and parents being part of the wider community.

Reconciliation Day

SRC Represent Pendle Hill at Prospect Hill

                               2019 Cumberland Council Reconciliation Day

On the 3rd of May, 2019 our Year 4-6 SRC members attended a commemoration of the first recorded act of reconciliation between the Darug Nation and European settlers at Prospect Hill in 1805 NSW.

Students from 5/6S and 5/6 V have shared their experiences of this day.

On the 3rd of May 2019, Year 4-6 SRC members went to Prospect Hill to attend a commemoration of the first known act of reconciliation between Aboriginal people and European settlers.

First we listened to Stephanie, a Darug woman who sang the Welcome To Country and then talked about a group of Darug women who made the reconciliation happen in 1805. At the end of her talk she sang a song called “Beautiful Woman”.

We learnt a Kangaroo and Emu dance which we performed in front of the teachers. It then started to rain and the Reconciliation event ended.

5/6S

On Friday, 3rd of May, 2019 Year 4-6 SRC went to a special reconciliation event where we learned about Reconciliation in our country.

First there was a Welcome to Country with a song and a speech. Some of the local dance groups  performed Emu and Kangaroo dances. Then they split us into groups so we could do some activities.

Next we got to our activity and they taught us how to do the Emu and kangaroo dances. Then we went to have lunch and it was pouring. We went to get sausages and when we went for seconds Isabella dropped her sausage while running in the rain.

We had an amazing day and at the end of the day we had all learned about Reconciliation.

Shoe Box Appeal

Thank you

At the end of last year, our school participated in the Shoe Box Appeal. Our school community donated items for primary school aged students, that were doing it tough in the drought affected areas of NSW. your donations were placed into wrapped shoe boxes delivered to Spring Ridge Public School.

The Principal, students and families sent a letter expressing how grateful they were to receive such generous gifts. It lifted them up as a community and below is a letter from the Principal and photo of the students.

Thank you to all of the families and staff who sent in toys, games, books and clothes to support our country neighbours.

Attendance

Attendance is Important for Learning and Well-Being

It is important for students to be on time and at school every day, every possible day. Being at school is vital for your child's understanding of concepts and learning new skills. Have you ever thought about what happens if your child is often late, or absent, without an adequate reason?

Have a look at the tables below, they may surprise you!

Remember, the school needs to be notified of any absences. You can do this by:

Writing a note

Calling the school

Sending a message through Skoolbag

Speaking to your child's teacher

NSW Premier's Reading Challenge 2019

Remember to log your books for the Premiers Reading Challenge. All students have been reminded of how they can log onto the website to record their books, during library time. The school holidays are a great time to catch up on some reading. You can borrow books from the school library or your local library. You can even swap books at our Little Street Library!

National Testing for Year 3 and Year 5 students

Students in Year 3 and 5 will participate in the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy or NAPLAN. This will take place in Term 2, from Tuesday 14th May to Thursday 16th May. NAPLAN tests skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time through the school curriculum. In addition to the knowledge and skills students are developing in class, teachers will familiarise students with the test by looking at past NAPLAN tests and practising the skills needed in answering questions.

The link below (NAP - Home) is the NAPLAN website. It answers questions you may have about the test and some sample questions, should you wish to look at these with your child.
