Willoughby Public School Newsletter

Term 1, Week 4 - Friday 21 February 2020

SCHOOL VISION STATEMENT

At Willoughby Public School we empower students to demonstrate creativity, collaboration, curiosity and persistence to become successful life-long learners. Students will be challenged in productive and innovative learning environments promoting inclusivity, resilience, respect and confidence.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Carers

Our Willoughby students and teachers have settled into a good routine with everyone navigating around the many obstacles across the playground. The building works continue and we saw the installation of our new school sign above the Oakville Rd main entry on Friday. Thank you to our kindergarten parents for your support in encouraging independence and responsibility from day 1. As we approach the mid point of Term 1 you will notice the children starting to show signs of fatigue – early bedtimes help with this as well as limiting afternoon activities.

Parent teacher information evenings:

On Wednesday afternoon and evening we welcomed our Early Stage 1 and Stage 3 parents to our annual information evenings for 2020.The format of the meetings had a slight change this year to bring the stage groups together for the meetings. It provides an opportunity to meet the whole team and understand the structure of supervision. We will host an open evening in Term 2 after we have moved into our new learning spaces. I’m looking forward to Stage 1 and Stage 2 meetings in Week 5.

Swimming Carnival success!

Thank you to Miss Limbert, Miss Cho, Miss Stanley and Mr Talbot for organising our annual swimming carnival at Macquarie University Aquatic Centre on Tuesday 18 February. Thank you to our Years 2-6 teachers and parents for your help on the day with time keeping, marshalling students efficiently into their races and crowd control. Our 2020 sport house leaders very successfully led their house groups with cheering and supporting swimmers. I was very impressed with the way our students managed the changed conditions we encountered by not having access to the hill to view the races. I must admit I enjoyed the fans and air conditioned room as a place out of the sun during the day. Please see a few action shots from the carnival attached. The full gallery of swimming carnival photos will be playing on the screen at the front office this coming week.

Positive Behaviour Engaging Learners (PBEL)

Our whole school positive behaviour system and framework provides consistency across our school, no matter where you are in our school the same expectations apply: Show Respect, Be Responsible and Do your personal best. We also have our discipline aspect of PBEL system which focuses on students taking ownership for their own behaviour and choices they make in the playground and classrooms. The expectations have been explicitly taught in class and are regularly revisited. Our Willoughby Way awards reflect:

Keeping yourself and others safe; taking responsibility for your own learning and behaviour; respecting yourself and others; respecting the school environment; striving for personal best

·         be an active participant in school life

·         work cooperatively with fellow students

·         wear school uniform

·         be polite at all times to students, teachers, parents and visitors

·         support fellow leaders in performing their duties

·         be able to speak clearly and with confidence

·         be wonderful ambassadors for Willoughby Public School

The PBEL team have decided from feedback from teachers and students to make the Willoughby Way Awards accumulative commencing from this 2020. This makes it more equitable for those students who often receive 2 awards each year and never get the third within the year. This focus on the ongoing expectations will provide long term goals for students. Once we have moved into our new hall / buildings we will be having regular assemblies with each class taking turn to host or perform and item for the K-2 or 3-6 students. The roster has already been developed we are just waiting on the builders to finish the buildings.

WPS SPORTS UPDATE

Swimming

Our swimming carnival was held on Tuesday 18 February at Macquarie University Aquatic Centre. We would like to thank our wonderful students who created a fantastic atmosphere of sportsmanship throughout the day.

Our House Captains and Vice Captains in their colourful outfits were busy all day competing, leading their houses in cheers, helping students make it to their races and much more. Thank you also to all the teachers who worked throughout the day to make it a successful carnival. Our parent volunteers and supporters were very much appreciated and another integral part of making our carnival a success.

We had some records broken on the day (three records were broken not once but twice!)

Senior Girls 50m Butterfly Olivia Corr 40.6 and Amelie Constantian 36.68 (previous record 2017, 40.77)

12 years Girls 50m Freestyle Olivia Corr 34.79 and Amelie Constantian 33.44 (previous record 2009, 35.63)

13 years Girls 50m Freestyle Mai Pethebridge 53.66

Senior Girls 50m Breaststroke Olivia Corr 45.98 (previous record 2012, 47.12)

Senior Girls 50m Backstroke Olivia Corr 40.38 and Amelie Constantian 38.04 (previous record 2012, 42.43)

Apologies to Olivia Corr whose 2019 record in 11 years Girls 50m Breaststroke was 49.12 (previous record 2016, 49.81)

The Zone Swimming Carnival will be held in North Sydney on Friday 13 March. More information regarding our Zone team to come. Our top place getters will receive their ribbons shortly and soon after we will be announcing the students who have qualified for the WPS Zone Swimming team.

Many thanks to Pip Stanley, Melissa Cho, Ben Talbot and Joanna Limbert for organising the fantastic event.

Elite Sports

Please note, these trials are for children who play sport at a Representative/Elite level. Participants need to have regular coaching and play in high level competitions out of school. We can only send through our best three girls and best three boys to the area trials. Willoughby P.S. can only send a maximum of 2 boys and 2 girls to the trials.

The Elite Sports we can participate in are:

AFL

TENNIS

BASKETBALL

CRICKET

SOFTBALL

GOLF

TOUCH FOOTBALL

HOCKEY

NETBALL

RUGBY LEAGUE

RUGBY UNION

SOCCER

A few parents have been asking and emailing about how it works and here’s an example. After explaining the requirement for tennis, we had seven expressions of interest. One student has played for seven years and gets professional coaching for 6-7 hours each week. Another student has played for 2 years and gets one hour of coaching each week. If these two players were to play each other, the more experienced player who trains more regularly is more likely to win. Therefore, Willoughby will only send the most experienced players if they meet the criteria. The key point to remember is that the trials are equivalent to Regional Trials, which is higher than Zone. See below for other sporting opportunities.

Carnivals

Cross Country - Term 2, Week 5, Thursday May 28th

Thankyou also to Little Athletics for your offer of help, we are looking forward to working together with you to help deliver a competitive representation for Willoughby Public School.

Gala Days

There are three Gala days this term. AFL, Rugby Union and Rugby League (Paul Kelly Cup, Rugby 7’s and Greg Florimo Cup).

Paul Kelly Cup and Rugby 7’s are on the 24th of March

The Paul Kelly Cup consists of 12 player teams competing in round robin gala days in your local area. Games are played on a smaller field using modified rules. Players will need a mouth guard.

Greg Florimo Cup is on the 6th of April

Named after one of the Bears best players, these 7 a-side competitions are aimed at developing Rugby League skills in a safe environment and is suitable for all levels of experience.

PSSA

Stage 3 Netball and Soccer and Stage 2 AFL will start Term 2, Week 3. More information will follow.

SCHOOL OPAL CARD

Students need to tap on / off with their Opal Card

Data collected from tapping on and off with Opal Cards is used to schedule bus services. One such afternoon bus service at a local school was cancelled as students were not using their cards and it appeared the bus route was not being used. Please encourage your children to have their school opal card with them each day and use it on each trip so that WPS bus services are not impacted.

WPS LIBRARY NEWS

Library 2020

During Term 1, the library will be open most mornings between 8.35am and 9.00am, for reading, returning books and borrowing.

We will also be open for a short time 3.00-3.15pm, for students accompanied by a parent, for returning and borrowing.

Each week, each class will come to the Library for a lesson, so ask your child which day is their Library Day and remind them to bring their books for return or renewal. It is helpful to have a library bag and a consistent and specific location at home for library books. Loans are for 2 weeks – Y1-Y6 may borrow up to 3 books. Kindergarten can initially only take 1 book for Term 1, but may take 2 books in later Terms.

WPS LIbrary Website

WPS Library has its own website and Instagram account, packed with interesting and useful information about the library and new books, old books and everything to do with reading.

Site: www.librarywps.com/

Instagram: @wps_library

Scholastic Book Club

We oversee the Scholastic Book Club program which rolls out twice each term. For the first issue in 2020, everyone will receive a paper copy of the Scholastic Catalogue. Orders will only be processed by Scholastic’s on-line LOOP order system. A week or so after the Issue closes, orders will be sent in bulk to the school.

https://mybookclubs.scholastic.com.au/Parent.aspx

NSW Premiers Reading Challenge

We also oversee the Premiers Reading Challenge which begins in March 2020. K-2 will have their Reading Records completed by Staff, as they read to the classes during the year. Year 3-6 students will need to complete their own records, the Teacher Librarians will guide them through the process and remind them each week to update their Record. At the completion of the Challenge in August, students who have read the required number of books are issued with a Certificate. Further details to help you help your student are available from the Library or the PRC website.

Volunteers

We will always welcome any parent or relative who is interested in helping out in the library. Most of the year there is always book covering either with contact or plastic to be done – this is a task you can do at home, or here in the library. We are in special need of help for the Book Fair in Term 3 – setting up and breaking down and manning the donations desk is always a huge task. If you are able to help, please come and see us, or email Mr Thorn with your contact details (james.thorn1@det.nsw.edu.au)

NUT & PEANUT ALLERGY (ANAPHYLAXIS)

At Willoughby Public School we have a number of students with a

LIFE THREATENING NUT / PEANUT ALLERGY.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

Even a small trace of nut, peanut or nut/peanut product may trigger a severe allergic reaction called Anaphylaxis, which attacks the immune system leading potentially to death within minutes.

This reaction can happen by taste, touch and sometimes can be airborne. All of these students have access to an adrenaline injection in the form of an Epipen, which can save lives. Photo posters are displayed in the classrooms, canteen, staffroom, playground bags and sick bay for easy identification of these children.

Willoughby PS works with parents/carers to support students in developing an awareness of their allergies and what foods to avoid. Students are encouraged not to share food and to always check with a parent/adult/teacher if unsure at any time.

HOW CAN YOU HELP TO KEEP WPS STUDENTS SAFE?

Please help us by not including peanut or any nut products in your child’s lunchbox. This includes peanut butter and Nutella.

Please avoid products with any nuts/peanuts listed as an ingredient.

Explain about nut/peanut allergy to your child and encourage the ‘no food sharing’ rule.

Please consider what you are sending for birthday treats to share with the class, checking there are no nut products included.

The school canteen does not serve products containing nuts.

It is only with the continued support of all parents and staff that we can effectively maintain a safe school environment for these children.

Thank you for your understanding. We know you will want to support the school and these children.
