Principal's Message

A big congratulations to Room 5 who performed a fantastic assembly item related to their Science investigations around living and non-living things. There were some inventive costumes, and the students did a wonderful job singing and acting. The crowd really enjoyed this item and were impressed with the students’ recital; well done!

What a busy couple of weeks it has been with our Year 6 Camp to Broome, School Photos, Colour Fun Run and Speedway visit. Please see more details of these below. Next week we move into our Faction Athletics and Book Week activities, an exciting part of our term! Our Faction Athletics has been redesigned this year to fit on our oval and to run with possible impacts of Covid. A few things to note are that; students have been pre allocated into divisions for races based on sprints during sport lessons (alleviating the need for timers on the day); longer races, such as 200m and 400m, will be completed with laps on the 100m track and team games are scheduled after each running session. We hope this makes for a smooth day and one that all spectators will enjoy. We look forward to seeing you there.

We have farewelled Miss Nina DeAngelo, an amazing Education assistant, as she moves on with her family. We wish her well and thank her for her valuable contribution to our school; especially our Pre-primary classes. We are currently still recruiting for this and other vacancies. If you know of someone in town who may be looking for Education Assistant work with school hours and school holiday leave, please encourage them to come and speak with us at the office.

Earlier in the year, parents had the opportunity to complete the National School Opinion Survey and provide their responses. Staff and the school board have reviewed these and celebrated the successes and investigated areas for improvement. Some areas recognised as strengths were; teachers at this school expect my child to do their best, I can talk to my child’s teacher about my concerns, this school looks for ways to improve and teachers at this school motivate my child to learn. A common theme for investigation was the management of behaviour and we are please to be undertaking the Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) journey to build on our school’s existing strengths, positive behaviour programs and strategies, develop a consultative and collaborative community-owned process, build a consistent approach to positive behaviour expectations and develop procedures for responding to behaviour errors, with a focus on re-teaching.

Our staff have developed the below purpose statement do drive this-

The Newman Primary School Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) team aims to collaboratively facilitate a positive approach to expected behaviours across the school in consultation with students, teachers, and the community. Our safe, positive and supportive learning environment will be enhanced by an easily understood and accepted framework that fosters improved behaviours, and explicitly teaches social skills and resilience, enabling us to achieve higher educational outcomes.

Year 6 Camp

Wow what a wonderful week. Year 6 students, together with Mrs Hudson, Mr Chapellow and Ms Cook spent 5 nights at  beautiful, warm Cable beach!

We commenced with a visit to Pearl Luggers then the town lookout, China town and shopping all over Broome. Afterwards we all had a quick play and morning tea at the town beach. Laser tag completed the day.

Another day found the children visiting the Broome museum. Then they had a trip out to Gantheaume Point for a look around and a little bit of rock climbing! Next it was off to The Mango place and we all had a yummy mango smoothie and a picnic lunch. We then bounced our way to Willie Creek pearl farm and had the best tour and afternoon tea!! Back to camp for Dominoes pizza, then off to the movies to watch The Minions - The Rise of Gru.

Another day and the kids had an absolute ball on a 2 hour mini surf carnival. We did our low ropes and raft building. Some really awesome team work guys!  After that it was free time at the pool or a long walk along Cable beach.

We finished off the day with a magnificent beach BBQ and icy poles before  having our campfire with marshmallows.

We finished our final day with archery and a 10 meter climb. Then off to mini golf for a few rounds! When we finished mini golf, we went out to the crocodile park. We all held a little baby crocodile and loved this visit. Next we were off to Cable beach for our camel rides. Fish and chips or nuggets and chips for dinner down on Cable beach.

On our final night we have had a small celebration with some camp awards. Well done to those students.

The children are a credit to you all. We had the absolutely best time!!!!

One full week of learning, activities and fun!

Colour Fun Run

Newman Primary School  held our Colour Fun run yesterday Thursday 18 August as a whole school event.

It was a day filled with bright smiles and bright colours! Turning our students into running rainbows of happiness!

Our students participated in events such as balloon bonanza, pole weaving, hurdles hoop maze and the balance challenge.

We raised $12,725 with our Colour Explosion School Run 4 Fun! which is an amazing effort. This money will go towards equipment for the children to use during recess and lunch.

Your prizes and participation certificates are on their way, so male sure you keep an eye out. To our fundraising MonSTARS congratulations and you will be receiving a MonSTAR bag tag, well done!

Thank you again for your support and generosity! We couldn't do it without you

Speedway Visit

Today we had Bernie Matkovich and Lee from the Newman Speedway bring a sprint car and sedan to the school for classes to see. This was set up outside our Library and each class had the opportunity to listen to a brief talk about safety, speedway, and the 50 year celebration before everyone got the opportunity to inspect the car.

Each class was given colouring sheets to complete and winners will be selected and announced at our next assembly.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019). Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes the year of schooling, category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional and the level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive. This information assists schools to formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools, consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools and develop shared practices so that they can review learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

Book Week 2022

Book Week this year will be celebrated from Monday 22 August to Friday 26 August 2022.

Newman Primary School would like to invite all students and parents to our two special events. A “whole school dress up parade” and a “Reading by Torchlight” event.

On Wednesday, 24 August all students from K – 6 are invited to dress up as their favourite book character. This year’s theme for Book Week is “Dreaming with Eyes Open”. We will be celebrating with all students participating in a book week parade, in the undercover area commencing at 8.20am. If your child does not formally attend Kindergarten on this day, they are still invited to dress up and join us for the parade. We will ensure they get to parade their costume. Parents will need to stay with your child and take them home at the conclusion of the parade.

Our Reading by Torchlight event will be held in the school grounds, in front of the under covered area on Thursday 25 August from 5.30 – 6.30pm. All families are asked to bring along a picnic rug, pillows, books that can be shared and read with your family members, torches, and don’t forget the family picnic snacks!

As the sun should be setting at approx. 5.47pm, this will be the time to bring out the torches. Reading by torchlight will give your child an opportunity to experience reading in a different, fun and exciting way and continue the development of reading for pleasure.
