PRINCIPAL'S UPDATE

Dear Parents/Carers

What a week it's been!

We've had new playgrounds to explore, Stage 2 classes finished off their Planetarium incursion in a gigantic dome that just managed to fit inside our new hall, we've had a couple of mini open-air discos in the playground, trials for PSSA sports have taken place, some Kindy classes have visited the Field of Mars Environmental Education Centre, staff enjoyed a special fundraiser socially-distanced breakfast ... and the first 5 of our Demountable City classes have moved back into their classrooms - situated in the old library block.

Friday night and Saturday sees the remaining Demountable City classrooms move into our historical building, C Block ... with the demountables planned to be taken away over the holidays so that restoration works to the high school oval can take place.

Building Update

Monday will see Stage 1 classes (Years 1 & 2) working in their new classrooms in C Block.

Works to the Medway Lane back gate and some minor landscaping is planned for Saturday, with further rectification works planned for the school holidays. These works will see the front entry concrete repaired and resurfaced, some repairs to the surface of the Level 2 outdoor area, "the blue roof," and new joinery and sinks installed in C Block.

Afternoon pick up areas

With Years 1 and 2 situated in C Block from Monday, classes will be dismissed out of the Rose Garden gates. This means that Year 1 and 2 parents/carers can wait along the Oakville Road fence to collect students at 3pm. Please note, the Rose Garden gates are only for exiting the school at 3pm, and are not to be used for morning arrival/entry to the school at this stage.

Students to stay home if sick

Thank you to parents/carers for your support in keeping students who are unwell at home. We appreciate you adhering to the infection control procedures we have in place.

School Security Unit - contact 1300 88 00 21

The Department of Education's School Security Unit can be reached 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on: 1300 88 00 21

If you notice anything untoward on site, particularly over weekends and nights, please give School Security a call so they can send out a security patrol to check on things.

Thank you

A special thank you to the P&C clubs and committees for their efforts in preparing for the recommencement of band, chess, netball, uniform shop, lost property and all the extra work involved in complying with relevant hygiene, distancing and safety protocols. One of these measures, along with signing in as a visitor, is completing name and contact details on an "External Visitors to School Site"  form each time you are on site to allow accurate contact tracing, in case it is ever required. A copy of this form is attached below and will be available at the front office.

Another thank you to our wonderful teachers who work so hard  to ensure that classroom moves don't result in any disruption to learning programs. It is no small feat, and I acknowledge and thank them for the extra hours put into to ensure a smooth move. A well-deserved holiday is almost here!

Pink Breakfast & Morning Tea

You may have noticed Miss Killingback sporting her fancy pink hair recently.

It's been part of her pledge to GO PINK and raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

On Friday, staff enjoyed a special pink breakfast and morning tea, socially-distanced of course, and helped Miss Killingback exceed her fundraising goal.

Well-done, Madeleine!

Planetarium Incursion - Stage 2

Earlier in the year some Stage 2 classes enjoyed an incursion to support their Science unit of work. Sadly, COVID-19 restrictions meant that not all classes got to attend.

This week, Starr's Planetarium was back, and took centre-stage in our new hall. Actually, it was so big it pretty much took up the whole hall.

Once inside the dome, classes took part in an interactive look at our Solar System and Galaxy.

Best of all was the feedback we received from Gary, the presenter:

"I just wanted to say that it was a pleasure visiting your school. Your students were great - engaged, respectful and well behaved. They asked some fantastic questions and I hope that I have inspired them to find out more about our universe. You and your staff should be very proud of them."

Well done, Stage 2 classes.

We can't wait to have parents and carers visiting school to see our new playgrounds and learning spaces. Until restrictions lift, we are using technology to share snippets of learning from inside our new homebases. This week, we feature the 6/5 Homebase of Ms Rist and Miss Haefeli.

NSW Curriculum Review

In May 2018, the NSW Government announced the launch of the NSW Curriculum Review (the Review). This was the first comprehensive review of the NSW primary and secondary curriculum since 1989, and aimed to equip students to continue to contribute to Australian society in the 21st century. Parents and carers were invited to be part of the Review through consultation opportunities in 2018 and 2019. Feedback from parents and carers informed the shape of the final recommendations of the Review.

The publication of the NSW Curriculum Review final report indicates the completion of the review process and signals the commencement of activities to achieve curriculum reform.

A fact sheet is attached below.

?BAND REHEARSALS AND TUTORIALS RETURN TO WPS

It will be music to everyone’s ears to hear our three bands will be able to rehearse in our amazing new hall, and musicians can have face-to-face tutorials in Term 3!

The Band Committees and Conductors have worked extremely hard for WPS musicians over the past five months.  When completion of our hall was delayed, band rehearsals were moved to lovely Laurelbank Cottage, which involved the setup of a walking bus to take children back to WPS each morning, as well as moving equipment and instruments every day.  Kate Nieland and parent supervisors must be congratulated and heartily thanked for keeping rehearsals going during that difficult time.

When rehearsals in the hall were thwarted in Term 2 by COVID-19 restrictions, Band Convenors and Conductors set up zoom catchups to keep the interest of musicians so they could learn new pieces, and receive feedback from conductors.  The first rehearsals in the hall in Term 3 are long awaited and will no doubt be amazing for everyone!

Big thanks go to all the volunteers who moved instruments, equipment, music stands, filing cabinets and furniture from the band demountable to the new storeroom near the hall.  Well done, it was an incredible effort by you all!

NUT & PEANUT ALLERGY (ANAPHYLAXIS)

At Willoughby Public School we have a number of students with a

LIFE THREATENING NUT / PEANUT ALLERGY.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

Even a small trace of nut, peanut or nut/peanut product may trigger a severe allergic reaction called Anaphylaxis, which attacks the immune system leading potentially to death within minutes.

This reaction can happen by taste, touch and sometimes can be airborne. All of these students have access to an adrenaline injection in the form of an Epipen, which can save lives. Photo posters are displayed in the classrooms, canteen, staffroom, playground bags and sick bay for easy identification of these children.

Willoughby PS works with parents/carers to support students in developing an awareness of their allergies and what foods to avoid. Students are encouraged not to share food and to always check with a parent/adult/teacher if unsure at any time.

HOW CAN YOU HELP TO KEEP WPS STUDENTS SAFE?

Please help us by not including peanut or any nut products in your child’s lunchbox. This includes peanut butter and Nutella.

Please avoid products with any nuts/peanuts listed as an ingredient.

Explain about nut/peanut allergy to your child and encourage the ‘no food sharing’ rule.

Please consider what you are sending for birthday treats to share with the class, checking there are no nut products included.

The school canteen does not serve products containing nuts.

It is only with the continued support of all parents and staff that we can effectively maintain a safe school environment for these children.

Thank you for your understanding. We know you will want to support the school and these children.
