Principal's Report

Tuesday 29th March 2022

Hello everyone,

I’d like to start with a reminder that tomorrow night there is a special WebEx session for parents from our local area.  Dr. Billy Garvey, a paediatrician from the Royal Children’s Hospital will be online to talk about children. This session will address areas such as anxiety, separation anxiety and trauma in children. Currently I am the DET representative on a principal selection panel for a school in Bendigo and will be required up there until 8pm tomorrow night, so I will be unable to sit on the panel with Dr. Garvey, but our other local principal, Matt Forrest will help with questions and answers on the night. I’d love to see you join in to this special event. The details are in this newsletter. Once again, thanks to Olivia our Inclusion Coordinator for organising this.

This week, on Thursday, our grades 4, 5 and 6 students will be heading off on their Williamstown bike ride. At this stage, the weather looks a little misty/drizzly in the morning, but it will clear. Thanks so much to all of the parents who have offered to help on the day. We cannot do this event without you. I know that the students are very excited about both the ride and the pizza for lunch!!

On Friday we have the District Cross Country event at Dixon Field – the same place where the school event was held. If your child is competing, you are welcome to head down and watch.

In week two of term 2, we will commence our annual swimming program. This runs for two weeks (ten lessons) and is held at the Gisborne Aquatic Centre. Given that our students have had a long time without swimming lessons over the past couple of years, this intensive course, conducted by qualified swimming teachers, should help them to regain some of their skills and confidence in the water. All students will be bussed down for their lesson and then returned to school to continue with their normal timetable. A note about this went home yesterday. Could you please remember to return the form about swimming ability by the end of this term, so that the students can be accurately grouped? I understand that swimming lessons come at a significant cost, so if you have any issues paying for this, please just contact me and I’ll do whatever I can to help.

For the last week, I have been listening to our senior class (they are right next to my office) learning about different forms of government as part of the Primary Years Program. This is particularly relevant, given that our school site will be used as a polling place in May, for the Federal elections. It is wonderful to listen to the students’ insightful questions and thoughts about our democratic process as compared to other countries with very different forms of government. Last week they wrote about their Utopia and rather than rivers of chocolate and fairy floss trees (which I have seen students write about in other schools) our students wrote about a place where there was equality for all, no homelessness and a pervading sense of kindness. They are intelligent, articulate children who understand that they can take action to make a difference in their world. It makes me VERY happy!

Have a lovely week everyone.

Kind regards

Trish

PYP APPROACHES TO LEARNING

In the IB Primary Years Programme we teach our students a set of Approaches to Learning skills that will support them to be lifelong learners. Our students will be working on one or two of these skills at a time, not only within the PYP Programme of Inquiry but across all aspects of their learning. They will set a goal aligned to this list and then demonstrate their skills to the classroom teacher when they believe that they have achieved their goal.

Kimochis at MMPS

This week we are learning all about feelings and behaviours in Kimochis.

MMPS Update by School Reporter Eliza

Hello everyone.

Cross Country for Grades Three and up was a couple of weeks ago. It was a long distance jog. It was a cold day, but while racing it was hot and tiring. Everyone tried their best, and I think that's all that matters. Like the other sporting events, it is good for everyone to get active and have some fun while doing it, as well as being balanced and healthy.

Also, a couple Thursdays ago three students went to ‘Division’ for swimming and all did an absolutely amazing job. One student got through to the next level, ‘Regionals,’ where they will compete against students from other regions of Victoria. They are representing the whole of the Macedon Ranges.

Two weeks ago there was also a District Tennis competition and a student from MMPS was selected to go through to the next level, ‘Division,’ where they compete against the Western region of Victoria.

Everyone has done amazingly at all these different events. District Soccer, Netball, AFL and Basketball, are also coming up in term two.

Grades 4-6 went on a bike ride from school down to Macedon and back last week in preparation for the Williamstown bike ride this week. It was a hard ride because we had to go over hills and it was quite hot. There was also downhill, which was fun because we could speed down the hill. The Williamstown bike ride is a longer but flatter ride. It's 28km from Fairbairn Park in Ascot Vale to Williamstown and back.

Wear Your Favourite Colour Day

Last Friday 25th of March was "Wear Your Favourite Colour Day". Students came to school dressed in their favourite colour. Everyone had a great time getting to know each others favourite colours, and the school was awash with every colour in the rainbow!! It was a very bright and fun day. The Junior School Council collected a gold coin donation to help raise funds for the Sarcoma Organisation, and it was a very successful day with funds being raised in excess of $300 so well done to all, what a fantastic effort! Below are some great pics taken by our school photographer Darcy.

Foundation Update

Last week the Foundation students were learning how to write numbers. To help them do this, Foundation teacher Mrs Bowen thought it would be a great idea to combine the learning activity with a bit of fun and use shaving cream on desks as a creative canvas on which to finger paint their numbers! As you can see from the pictures below, the students had a blast learning to write their numbers from 1 to 10.

Grade 2 Update

In Grade 2 we have just finished our Inquiry unit on Families. We found that families take many shapes and sizes and can look very different; This is a wonderful thing! We looked at the many ways you can record all of the people you are related to and made these Family Trees. See below for some pictures.

Board Games Tuesday

As part of our Inclusion and Wellbeing focus this year, we have implemented a new Lunchtime Activity program for the students. For the last few Tuesday's some of our students have been involved in lunchtime Board Games, and having a whole lot of fun. These sessions provide opportunities for the students to have a break from the schoolyard, and partake in some inclusive activities to help build confidence and social skills.

Williamstown Bike Ride

This Thursday 31st March our Grade 4/5/6 students will be participating in the Williamstown Bike Ride. This ride allows them to practise the skills and theory learnt during their Bike Education, and also have a fun day out. A lunch pack is provided as a special treat for the day as well as fruit and bottled water. The bus will leave at 9.00 am so please ensure all students participating arrive at school on time with their bikes, helmets, water bottle and small backpack.  Students are required to wear their school  uniform for the day. Students will return to school by 3.00pm. Hopefully the weather is kind to us on the day, but we are sure it will be a whole lot of fun regardless.

District Cross Country

The District Cross Country event is being held this coming Friday 1st April at Dixon Field in Gisborne for the students who qualified. Students depart from MMPS by bus at 9.20 am, and the first race begins at 10.00 am and the last race at 11.30am. The 9/10 year olds will run the 2km course, and the 11/12 year olds will run the 3 km course. Please bring a hat, snack and plenty of water to drink for after the race. We wish all our competitors the very best of luck, and a fun morning.

From the Office

A big thank you for kindly welcoming myself to the Mount Macedon Primary School community.  It’s a lovely school I feel very lucky to be here.  I am available Wednesday to Friday and look forward to meeting more parents throughout the year.

A few reminders………..

Term 2

With the colder months ahead of us and the possibility of COVID causing further disruptions to schools, please be reminded that your triple vaccination status must be sighted at the office.

Evidence of triple vaccination is required for everyone entering the school including parents, grandparents, volunteers, contractors, delivery drivers and the list goes on and on and on!  At present, we can promise we will sight your certificate once and document it in an effort to avoid repeatedly asking.

This can be frustrating, however, your patience while we wade through the regulations and guidelines we must follow, does not go un-noticed and is greatly appreciated.

Working with Children’s Checks

A reminder to all parents/guardians to register MMPS as a volunteer organisation on the Working with Children’s Check website.  On updating your details, The Department of Justice send us an official letter which we keep on record and check through when parents opt to volunteer for activities.

Thank you to the parents and volunteers who have already provided this information.  Many activities and events would not go ahead without you!

Qkr!

There are quite a few activities awaiting payment on Qkr!  Please check your receipts for record of payments.

If you are unsure, please contact the office, myself and Naomi are more than happy to assist you or step you through how to view your receipts on Qkr!

Late Arrival, Early Departure & Absence

Thank you to everyone for being diligent and signing your children in and out.  This is important to ensure accurate attendance records for your child/ren and is also used in the event of an emergency.

A reminder, the Late Book and Early Departures Book is located at the reception desk.

If your child/ren are absent, please leave a message on the school absence line as early as possible.

Update Details

Update Details Forms were sent home earlier this term.  Thank you to those that have returned the forms.

If your family details change, please email the school mount.macedon.ps@education.vic.gov.au .

Enjoy the last two weeks of term!

FOS Bulb Fundraiser

Spring to it!

We know it’s hard to think about spring flowers when we’re still waiting for summer to arrive, but if you want your garden full of spring bulbs you need to order them now!

Welcome to our first fundraiser of the year, and this one is super easy to be a part of and spread the message far and wide to your friends and family (even those outside of Mount Macedon). Forty percent of all sales are donated to the school by Tesselaar, who is conducting the bulb sale on our behalf. So if you were going to order spring bulbs through a reputable seller then this is the way to do it and raise money for your local school at the same time. It’s all done online so no need for cash in envelopes or notes back to teachers, just head to www.bulbfundraiser.com.au/MOUNTMPS (it’s also super easy to send the link to family and friends). Get in quick, final orders will be taken until 9th April 2022, or until sold out.

Funds raised will go to supporting projects at the school. Please try and support this important fundraiser if you can.

Thanks,

The FOS Team
