Principal's Report

Tuesday 4th October 2022

Hello Everyone,

Welcome back to term 4. This is traditionally the busiest term in a school year – completing curriculum plans that we have been working on, fete, preparing for next year, doing transition programs, school camps in the warmer weather etc. I hope that you all had a lovely break (if you had one) and that you are looking forward to this term as much as I am. My short break away has left me feeling reinvigorated and full of new ideas for the school.

Have you seen our new eating area? If not, please come in and have a look. Brock Glenister, a parent at the school, and owner of Victorian Rockwork, has installed a new rock area. As part of our fire preparation program, and also because they were sadly in need of replacement, we have removed the old sleepers (a fire hazard) and replaced them with rock walls. I am SO happy with the result and have had some lovely feedback from the children. They especially like the purpose built “armchairs”. Thank you so much to Brock who did this project for much less than what it should have cost. I am very grateful and feel that it is a lovely companion for our new garden area.

The new project this term is to add an outdoor reading room. We have come up with a few plans and have also asked the students for their input. We now need to source a builder who could create this area for us. If you know of anyone who might have the time and skills – could you please let me know? The new outdoor learning areas in the school are adding a lovely new dimension to our spaces.

It is FETE TERM. This is always a busy, but happy few weeks. Please make sure that you keep November 12th free as we will need everyone on board to help for the day. If you haven’t yet put your name down to work on a stall, please contact the school or the numbers that are advertised as part of the fete, to give us an hour or so of your time. This is such an important event on our school calendar!! There is more information about the fete in this newsletter.

I am already working on class and staffing structures for 2023. It is with very mixed emotions that I let you know that Simon Dohler will be leaving the school for two years. He has requested, and I have granted him 2 years leave without pay to go and live and work in the Northern Territory. I am so sad to lose Simon’s teaching (and personal) skills, but it is also important to me to support him on his life journey. I too left Victoria for the NT to teach there for several years. It shaped me as a person and as a teacher and I wish Simon and his family every happiness and success on this adventure. I am currently working on replacing him with an experienced teacher to lead the International Baccalaureate in the school.

We will have more students next year than this year, but I currently have room for more students in the 5/6 area. If you know of anyone who is interested, please let them know that we are taking students who are not Mt Macedon residents in those classes. The numbers for next year do not fall evenly into class groups and so we will have all mixed classes next year e.g. F/1, 1/2. I will put the numbers in next weeks newsletter so that you will see the problems that I have in creating 5 classes. I always value your input and will be happy to hear your opinions on what our grades should look like next year.

Yesterday I spoke to Amanda Beezley, who is currently out of hospital and travelling well. Our meal train has stopped for a while, but when Amanda has to return for more chemotherapy, we can start it up again.

Our school has a lovely relationship with Gisborne Foodbank, and we have been allocated the month of October to help them support others in our local community. We will be collecting donations of food for them. Currently they need: -pasta sauces, children’s lunch box snacks (pretzels, popcorn) biscuits sweet and dry, muesli bars, sugar, pasta, rice, noodles, breakfast cereals, muesli, jam, vegemite, spreads, long life milk, shampoo and conditioner.

If you could drop any donations into the front office, we will make sure that they get to the Foodbank. Thank you for helping us to support those in need in our local community.

Kind Regards,

Trish

MMPS Update by School Reporter Eliza

Hello Everyone,

The holidays have passed and the two week break is over. We have all rested up, to get ready for the last term of school. This term will be busy with fun and educational events for the students and community alike.

This term there will be a sleepover for year 1 / 2. They will be staying at the school for a night. After the last couple years of COVID we can finally get back to these events. Grade 3 / 4 will also be going on camp to Boomerang Ranch. It's a horse riding camp and it will be fun and exciting for them.

Grade 3 / 4 are going to Quantum Vic. A STEAM centred place, teaching kids about science and maths. It will be a fun, interesting and exciting experience for them. And it will grow their knowledge in that area.

The grade 6's have also begun preparing for the Grade 6 Exhibition. It is the culmination of the PYP and every PYP school worldwide conducts one of these in the last year of their Primary school. We have started it, and are going to go on with it this term. We are split into groups and are conducting an inquiry that interests us. We have chosen our inquiry based on one of the seventeen Global Goals. At the end of the year the Grade 6's will be graduating and showing the highlights of their years at MMPS.

At the very end of the year, the whole school will go to Hanging Rock and have a picnic. The community carols will also be conducted just before Christmas. The school fete is also coming up bringing the community together after two long years. It's a fun event for everyone.

I hope everyone enjoys the last term and and all that it has to offer. It should be one to remember.

Eliza

District Basketball Update

On Wednesday September 14th, 16 of our senior students competed at the District Hoop Time Basketball competition, at Boardman Stadium in Sunbury.  Both of our MMPS teams took part in the 'Future Stars' competition and were very competitive.  They even got to play against each other which was a fun game!

All of our students enjoyed the day and it was great to see them experiencing a basketball competition while gaining a better understanding of how the game is played and umpired.

Well done to our senior students who represented our school with pride and excellent sportsmanship.

Below are some photos from the day.

Guitar at MMPS

Guitar lessons have resumed for Term 4, and it's going to be an exciting last term. The students spent their lesson this week learning and choosing new songs which they will be performing in their Guitar Concert at the end of November! Below are some pics of our Grade 2 guitar students learning how to play 'The Chicken Dance', which is always a fun classic.

Our new playground seating

Over the school holidays, we had some work done in the playground eating area. We were very fortunate to have one of our parents of the school Brock Glenister from Victorian Rock Work create a fantastic new space for the students to eat their recess and lunch. Below are some photos of the new seating area assembled entirely from large rocks. How amazing (and very functional) does this area look now? The natural rocks blend in so nicely with the rest of the school outdoor environment. When asked about the new seating, the students said it was "very comfortable" "much better and nicer than the wooden seating" and that "it fits in with the natural environment". We couldn't agree more.

Helping to Protect Wild Gorillas

One of our Grade 2 students Liam, is calling upon our help to recycle our old mobile phones to help protect wild Gorillas. As part of the Grade 2 Sharing the Planet inquiry, Liam is instigating action and calling on our community for help. Please read Liam's message below. Liam has set up a collection box for your old and used mobile phones at the school office. What a fantastic project and a great way to raise awareness and interest in this important world issue.

Hats in Term 4

Just a reminder to ensure that students have their hats to wear at school during recess and lunchtimes, as well as any other outdoor activities they may be participating in. It is important that we are all being sun smart and ensuring our children are protected from the harmful UV light that is at it's highest peak during the months of August to April, where UV index levels regularly reach 3 or above. Please also remember to name your children's hats as they quite often are lost, misplaced or left in the playground and it is handy to know who the hat belongs to! Spotted on the grounds were some of our students wearing their hats today.
