Principal's Report

Tuesday 28th of March 2023

Hello Everyone,

It’s hard to believe that we are racing towards the end of the term.

It has been a very busy few weeks here and I know that children (and parents) will be feeling a little tired. I understand that it feels sometimes as if there is always something on or coming up soon. We work hard to fit in as many outdoor activities as we can, while the weather is still favourable.

Next term we have both swimming and camp early in the term. Both of these, once again, are early to beat the cold weather. Whilst we can get two weeks in a row for swimming in Winter, we have found in the past that moving from the overheated pool environment back to the cold weather on the mountain caused colds etc. This is one of the reasons that we are splitting our swimming program into two different weeks in the year. The program will be held for one week in April and then again in October.

I’m also really aware that we are constantly asking for payments for something or your help to deliver programs. This too, will slow down soon. Please remember that I am here to support you in any way that I can. If you are finding it difficult to pay for excursions etc, come and see me.

VicHealth is running a campaign to encourage parents, children, and sporting groups to use school facilities. They are trying to get more children into healthy activities. Our school will be one of 10 schools showcased in this campaign. We currently leave our gates open on the weekends to allow children to come in and play on the playground or basketball court. Our facilities are also used for midweek futsal training and for before school Jui Jitsu lessons. Apparently, some schools are now locking up their facilities and not allowing them to be used out of hours. In this newsletter there is some information about the campaign and a QR code for you to scan to provide our thoughts. Please take a moment to support this by participating in the survey.

Sadly, Hayley Saunders, one of our Grade 1/2 teachers, has badly injured her Achilles tendon and will not be at school for the rest of the term. We are very lucky that our other Grade 1/2 teacher, Laura Wenczel has agreed to move to full time teaching to make sure that the class has consistency. Thanks Laura and get well soon Hayley!

Friends of the School is currently organising our annual Easter raffle. Thanks so much to everyone who has donated eggs and goodies for this. The raffle will be drawn on Thursday 6th April at our end of term assembly in the hall at 1.45pm. You are all welcome to attend. School finishes at 2.30pm.

School Council has decided to have a Pupil Free Day on Monday 24th April. This is the first day of Term 2 but given that the next day is a public holiday (ANZAC Day) the SC felt that having a Pupil Free Day on the 24th April would be less disruptive than scheduling it later in the term. Schools have 4 of these days a year, and the dates are decided by the School Council.

Tonight, we have the AGM for School Council at 7.30pm in the staffroom. At this meeting I will present our Annual Report for 2022. Once this has been verified it will go on to the school website for you to read. I am very proud of what the school achieved last year.

Cross Country was cancelled yesterday, due to wet weather. We will try to reschedule it in the next week.

This Friday we have the Williamstown Bike Ride. This is always a big day on our events calendar, and I know that the children are very excited. Currently the weather is looking ok, with showers predicted in the later afternoon (when we will be heading home). We will keep our fingers crossed that it stays this way. If it is too wet, we will reschedule to another time – we want the children to have fun and enjoy the day. Thanks so much to all the parents who have offered to cart bikes in trailers and to ride with the children.

Have a lovely week everyone.

Kind Regards,

Trish

From the Office

Hello everyone,

We hope that you've all had a good Term 1 so far, it sure has been a busy one! However, with less than 2 weeks left, we can look forward to Easter and the first school holidays. Below are a few messages for this week:

School Uniforms

We have had quite a few items of school uniforms (particularly jumpers) that student's have lost or misplaced, and it is very hard to find who they belong to, as many of them have not been named. Could we please remind parents to name their students uniforms, especially items like jumpers and hats that are quite frequently taken on and off throughout the day?

Lunch Orders

Thank you to everyone who has jumped on board with Flexischools and Red Door Cafe lunch orders. So far it has been going quite smoothly without too many hiccups. In Term 2, ordering will be fully on line via Flexischools, and we will not be runnning the paper bag and cash system anymore. So just a heads up - if you haven't had a chance to download the app, please do so before the end of Term 1. Instructions and more information can be found further below in this newsletter.

Consent and Payment via QKR!

A quick reminder that the forms for the Williamstown Bike Ride on 31st March and the Forest Edge Camp in Term 2 for Grades 4 - 6, are on QKR! We appreciate if parents could complete both payment and consent to participate electronically via QKR!

Student Medications

We would like to remind parents that if your child is required to take any type of medication whilst at school, you must hand the medication directly to the school office, and you will need to fill in a medication authority form. This is for all forms of prescribed medication, including Panadol / Paracetemol etc for minor ailments. This is to ensure that we have the correct information, instruction and clarity around administering the medication. You can find the form and our school Administration of Medication Policy on the website under Reports, Plans & Policies.

Thank you.

OH & S Volunteer / Parent Induction Booklet

Parent Volunteers

All parent volunteers are required to complete an OH & S induction, along with Child Safety procedures. If at any time you will be participating in any school camps or excursions, reading with students or helping in the classroom, an induction will need to be completed. You can find the Child Safe Policies on our Website, and attached below is the induction documents and child safety form to be signed and returned to the office with a copy of your Working With Children's Check. This is the process we have to follow to ensure the safety of all students. We appreciate your patience and thank you in advance to help us get through this process.

MMPS Easter Raffle

With just under 2 weeks to go, we are approaching the Annual Easter Raffle.

Each year Friends of the School (FOS) ask for donations of Easter goodies that we then package up into lots of prizes to be drawn at the final Term 1 assembly on Thursday April 6th.

Each classroom will have their own designated tub to place your much appreciated donations.

You can donate anything from Easter eggs, colouring books, story books, bunny ears, baskets (we even get a few tooth brushes in there too)!

School Photo Day 2023

A reminder that School Photo Day for MMPS is on Tuesday 4th April. Please ensure that students are in correct uniform on the day. This year all orders will be processed on line directly with MSP Photography. Parents will receive a personal email with a unique code from MSP for on line orders in the coming weeks. If you have any further queries or require any further information, please contact MSP on 03 5333 5577. Below is an example of the information you will receive via email to order your photos.

Just a quick message to let you know that our
Well-being and Inclusion Coordinator Olivia Desormeaux, has changed her days here at MMPS, she is now available on Monday's and Tuesday's.

Harmony Week:

The theme of Harmony Week was ‘everyone belongs’. Our students participated in Harmony Week activities and conversations, with a focus on understanding how all Australians equally belong to this nation and enrich it.

As a school we created an art piece highlighting our collective understanding of belonging* that we displayed on our school notice board.

Below is a photo of the students creations connected together. It looks fantastic.

A resource which we will be using to understand belonging is A kids book about Belonging by Kevin Carroll. You can watch it here : https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=D61RKIvcDJk

* Belonging: a feeling of being happy or comfortable as part of a particular group and having a good relationship with the other members of the group because they welcome you and accept you.

Definition of belonging from the Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary & Thesaurus © Cambridge University Press

Digi-Tech Harmony Week Activities

For Harmony Day, the Prep, 1 & 2 students had to spend time looking at another person and really seeing them. They then had to paint their portrait using a digital print program on iPad. Below are some of their amazing portraits. (Remember the portraits are signed by the 'artist', it is not the name of the person in the painting.) We have all been guessing who the students in the portraits may be!

MMPS Update by School Reporter Harriet

Hello everyone, there are only two weeks left of school!

Macedon Bike Ride

The Macedon bike ride is the hardest bike ride that the grade 4, 5s and 6s do in their bike education journey. It was a challenge for everyone to complete, even the teachers! Everyone showed an enormous amount of strength and support. The ride took us from MMPS down to Tony Clarke Reserve. We then rode through the pine forest to Macedon Primary School and then back up through Macedon township.

Williamstown Bike Ride

On Friday the 31st of March the grades 4, 5 and 6s are going to ride from Maribyrnong to Williamstown. The students will be riding through the city and will end up at a local park in Williamstown. There the students, staff and parent helpers will have a pizza lunch. Then they will ride back to Maribrynong and take the bus back to school. The ride is the final activity in our Bike Ed program and is always a highlight for many students.

We are coming very close to the end of a busy Term. Well done everyone on getting this far and I hope you have a wonderful final two weeks of school!

STEM at MMPS

This week in STEM the upper classes explored the aerodynamics of paper plane designs. They built and tested various designs with the grade 5/6 class determining the average distance for each design and graphing their findings. Below are photos of the students testing their plane designs from the stage in our school hall. What a fun lesson!

Gardening Club

Thanks to everyone who purchased our Veggies at the Gardening Club Veggie Stall last Wednesday, we hope you enjoyed them! It was a great success and everything was sold. The students have been so excited watching the veggies grow. One of our students Max is so proud of being part of gardening club. He has been tending to silverbeet and designed the bag for the stall. He made mum buy it and cook it!! He loves the program. Below is a photo of Max and the silverbeet making a nutritious addition to a delicious breakfast!

FOS News

Thank you to our new parents who have joined FOS. Sarah Valentini, Nick Farley and Katia Woods. We are so appreciative that you can volunteer some of your time to the school committee.

The next FOS meeting is 26th April at 7:30pm. If you have any feedback on last year's FOS events, please complete this quick survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2F5BPYJ  which will support the team on decision making for this year's social events and fundraisers.

Please reach out to your child's teacher or visit us at the office if you would like to join FOS or volunteer as a classroom representative.

Sushi Monday's - extended order cut off time

Just a quick note to say that we have extended the cut off time for ordering Sushi now to 9.15am on Monday mornings instead of 9am. We are hoping this gives parents a little more flexibility when placing orders, especially at the start of the week which we know can be busy.

Lunch Orders

Thank you to everyone that has jumped on board Flexischools to order lunches from the Red Door Cafe, it's been a great success so far and we look forward to seeing more specialty items added to the menu soon.

Lunch Orders from Red Door cafe in Macedon can now be ordered on line via the Flexischools App. This App can be downloaded on to your SMART phone, see below link for instructions:

https://www.mtmacedonps.vic.edu.au/source/AAFlexischools-orientation-flyer.pdf

We will still run the paper bag and cash system for a few weeks more to allow for any teething issues and give parents time to organise registration with Flexischools.

Hats in Term 1, 2023

Just a reminder to ensure that students have their hats to wear at school during recess and lunchtimes, as well as any other outdoor activities they may be participating in. It is important that we are all being sun smart and ensuring our children are protected from the harmful UV light that is at it's highest peak during the months of August to April, where UV index levels regularly reach 3 or above. Please also remember to name your children's hats as they quite often are lost, misplaced or left in the playground and it is handy to know who the hat belongs to!  Spotted enjoying their lunch time break were two of our students today wearing their hats!

Guitar Lessons 2023

Aaron Moar has been teaching guitar students at Mount Macedon Primary School for the last 8 years. He is keen to meet some new students who are interested in learning how to play, and continue working with current students for 2023. Aaron is a qualified teacher and has been teaching guitar for over 15 years. He conducts group lessons at the school, and teaches students of all levels and classes. His lessons are fun and interactive, where the students learn to play both modern and traditional tunes to practise their skills and technique. If you would like to enquire about guitar lessons for your child, please contact Aaron on 0438 177 764 or email: aaronmoar@infinitesound.com.au or see flyer below.

Ranges Music Network

The Ranges Music Network is very excited to be bigger and better at Mount Macedon Primary this year!  We have some exciting term-based performance and project activities planned in addition to our Group and Individual programs.

We'd also like 2023 to be the year of the bands -- with Classic Rock Band and Drum Squad taking the stage from 3:40-4:20pm after school each Wednesday.  If you are interested in learning an instrument while playing in the band or building on the technique and musicality you're developing in your group and individual lesson we'd love to have you.
