FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

Welcome to the new Term, for all returning students and the new members of our School family.

I do hope you have enjoyed some time for refreshment through the Spring Recess whilst our Year 12 students have been preparing for their examinations. Additionally, a range of holiday activities have been enjoyed by different groups of our students.

My congratulations and thanks are extended to:

  • The 42 strong cadet group who enjoyed their Camp in Week 1 of the Recess…under the new student leaders and SUO Ewan, a great but exhausting time was had by all under the command of Capt. McClean.
  • All the HSC teachers who spent significant days in their holidays, supporting the Class of 2019 as they made final preparations for their examinations, which begin with the first English paper on Thursday.
  • The 21 French students who spent time in New Caledonia exposed to the French language and culture of this antipodean French department, under the guidance of Mrs Bachelin, Ms Lovell and Mr Hine.
  • Cameron G12 who has been named in the Australian U17 Men’s National Football Team to represent Australia at the FIFA U17 World Cup in Brazil in October. Cameron is currently with the team, in Chile, making final intense preparations.
  • Meg C12 who has been named in the Born 2002 Australian Women’s Water Polo Squad again, this time to prepare for the 2020 World Championships in Netanya, Israel in September. Additionally, Meg has been selected from this squad to travel to train and compete in Japan in November this year.
  • The vast majority of the Year 11 and 12 HSC Dance students who have been nominated for Callback 2019. This is an almost unprecedented result and Ms Tamatea and Ms Giovanelli are warmly commended for their support of the students.

Forging the Future…

This was the title of the biennial conference of AHISA (Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia) which I attended during the break. The theme was so apt, for our role in leading schools, is to ensure we are preparing our students for the world they will inherit. Opinions are so varied as to what is needed in the curriculum and the ‘hidden curriculum’, to ‘future proof’ our students. Almost daily we read of skills that will be needed, what future work may look like, how tertiary education may be delivered and the continuing challenges in leading complex organisations. In exploring so many areas we were fortunate to hear from household names such as Bernard Salt and Mark McCrindle as they shared the data that helps shape decision making. To know what parents are seeking and how our nation is changing, provides help in allowing us to transform, whilst we perform. Meeting with my colleagues from around the nation, is always of great value and additionally, I was able to visit several schools.

The role of a Principal has changed enormously from the time of my first appointment as Head in the 1990s. The generational shift, digital disruption, change fatigue, cultural diversity, social trends and parental expectations could not be more different. Sharing the challenges with colleagues, is refreshing and affirming. It sets us up for all that we are undertaking in Term 4, in preparation for 2020 and beyond; a time of reaffirming who we are and reshaping our vision for learning. It is an exciting time.

So, as the new and final Term of 2019 begins, we need to be prepared for a hectic term for all, with assessments a key part. I hope everyone is focused on a strong finish and ending 2019 happily and successfully.

I look forward to sharing the many events with you all.

SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS

Years 9 and 10 Elective French Excursion

On Tuesday 24 September, a group of 21 students from Years 9 and 10 Elective French, along with 3 teachers, Mrs Bachelin, Ms Lovell and Mr Hine set off for 7 nights in Nouméa, New Caledonia. The students engaged in a variety of educational and cultural experiences throughout the trip. We had a guided tour of the Tjibaou Cultural Centre, engaging in cultural activities and cooking the Bougna with some native Kanak people. We did a day trip to Amédée lighthouse, where we indulged in a tropical island lunch and show, and went snorkelling with some amazing reef life, including turtles and sea snakes. We had an informative tour of the capital city on the Tchou Tchou Train, a visit to the local markets and several visits to the supermarket to buy and taste some of the foreign delicacies. The students attended language lessons further enhancing their experience in New Caledonia, improving their French language skills and learning about the country and its culture. Apart from the scheduled activities, the students really enjoyed putting their French into practice and experiencing the enjoyment of speaking another language as they navigated their way through everyday situations; engaging with the locals, ordering food and drinks, purchasing bus tickets and communicating with hotel staff. A great time was had by all and a very memorable week spent together!

JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS

J6H is Visited by an Expert

On Tuesday 17 September, J6H were lucky enough to have a special science lesson with Mr Andrew Jopling, an engineer at Qantas – and Phoebe’s dad. What an experience it was to have someone with such knowledge and expertise come and speak to us about energy and how we can both harness and use this in our lives. The girls were able to conduct experiments such as measuring the energy present in lemons and transforming a regular nail into a magnet. They were also able to look at how gravity and our planet works, and what energy is needed to get planes and space shuttles into the atmosphere. Thank you Mr Jopling for your time and expertise. You gave us all so much new information – and lots of interesting and challenging things to think about and explore.
