Please see the attached map to help you find your way around WPS.

We have welcomed a number of new staff members to Willoughby Public School’s dynamic teaching team. We have organised the classes around the building program – unfortunately we were unable to move straight into our exciting new learning spaces. Thank you parents, students and teachers for your resilience as we navigate our way around the school site. It is hoped that we will now move towards the end of Term 1. It was a great opportunity to have a look inside the new hall on Tuesday as we formed our new classes. One student made the comment “It’s like walking into a shopping centre!”  The entrance to the school is very open and spacious.

In order to reduce congestion at the entrance to Demountable City – I would like parents to make the meeting point with their children along the laneway. There is no safe area within the Demountable City area for parents, prams, toddlers and children. Thank you for your anticipated support of this request. A reminder that no cars are to enter the laneway off Keary Street as this area is a pedestrian entry/ exit for WGHS as well as WPS.

The Rose Garden area is the meeting point for our 2020 kindergarten students – please wait at the Oakville Road side of the Rose garden so students can exit safely. We ask parents no to go into the building as it adds to the congestion and movement to the classrooms. Thank you for your cooperation in waiting on the Oakville Road side of the Rose Garden on Friday afternoon.

Welcome morning tea – 2020 Kindergarten

Thank you to our P&C and Year 1 families for providing a lovely morning tea on Friday morning to welcome our new families. We were able to use our school hall. The kindergarten students have had a great week and appear to be pretty settled after their first week at school. Thank you to our Kindergarten team and support teachers for providing a safe and secure environment for our new students.

School Uniform

It has been great to see the girls at Willoughby PS in our new school uniform – they look great! If I had a choice – I would definitely choose the shorts and new polo shirt. Thank you to the uniform shop and P&C committee for working through the surveys and selecting a great combination for our girls.

Primary Mathematics Specialist initiative 2020 - 2021

Willoughby PS is participating in an exciting professional learning trial in Mathematics. Mrs Garrard and Ms Stericker will be leading this professional learning with our Willoughby teachers. This project will provide opportunities to build the capacity of our teachers delivering quality mathematic lessons through team teaching, lesson study and collaborative planning. This project will continue into 2021.

Novel Coronavirus

Thank you to the families in our community who supported the recommendation to delay the return to school after travelling overseas we appreciate your support with this matter.

The news regarding Novel Coronavirus on the television, radio, internet or social media has been constant. While this news can be upsetting for many people it is important that we work together to support those who have been in the impacted areas. It is also very important that we don’t assume people who have a Chinese or other Asian background are linked to the spread of the Novel Coronavirus. Anti-Asian language and behaviour, or any other form of racism is unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our school community.

NUT & PEANUT ALLERGY (ANAPHYLAXIS)

At Willoughby Public School we have a number of students with a

LIFE THREATENING NUT / PEANUT ALLERGY.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

Even a small trace of nut, peanut or nut/peanut product may trigger a severe allergic reaction called Anaphylaxis, which attacks the immune system leading potentially to death within minutes.

This reaction can happen by taste, touch and sometimes can be airborne. All of these students have access to an adrenaline injection in the form of an Epipen, which can save lives. Photo posters are displayed in the classrooms, canteen, staffroom, playground bags and sick bay for easy identification of these children.

Willoughby PS works with parents/carers to support students in developing an awareness of their allergies and what foods to avoid. Students are encouraged not to share food and to always check with a parent/adult/teacher if unsure at any time.

HOW CAN YOU HELP TO KEEP WPS STUDENTS SAFE?

Please help us by not including peanut or any nut products in your child’s lunchbox. This includes peanut butter and Nutella.

Please avoid products with any nuts/peanuts listed as an ingredient.

Explain about nut/peanut allergy to your child and encourage the ‘no food sharing’ rule.

Please consider what you are sending for birthday treats to share with the class, checking there are no nut products included.

The school canteen does not serve products containing nuts.

It is only with the continued support of all parents and staff that we can effectively maintain a safe school environment for these children.

Thank you for your understanding. We know you will want to support the school and these children.

Class Parent

In your child’s class there will be a nominated Class Parent who will liaise with the teacher/s and parents and, using a class contact list, send out useful information about activities specific to the class as well as information about P&C activities and events.  Your contact details for this list will be collected at the parent information evening early this Term and distributed only to parents in your child’s class.

Other News…

Kindy “Tea and Tears” Morning Tea

The P&C hosted a morning tea for Kindy parents and carers in our brand new hall on Friday 7 February.  It was great to meet so many lovely kindy mums and dads.  This is the first of many social occasions they are sure to experience at Willoughby – where lifelong friendships are formed (for the parents as well as the kids).

A big thank you to the Year One families who brought in some delicious treats for our new Kindy parents & carers, our P&C Executive for serving the teas and coffees, and our Kindy Ambassador, Francine Burge, Class Parent Coordinator, Amy Daly and the School Executive for answering loads of questions!

Traffic Safety Reminders

Have you seen our new traffic safety signs?  They have lots of good reminders, like the maximum legal waiting time in the Kiss 'n' Ride zones is 2 MINUTES!

Our Traffic Taskforce is keen to implement some further safety measures in 2020. If you have any suggestions, please email president@wpspandc.com.au.

Blow Your Own Trumpet

 Seeking New Angels!

Our Lost Property Angels are in need of 6 new helpers to join the team.

You'll only need to spare an hour or two once per term to help sort lost property and reunite it to owners.

We work in teams of two, so grab a buddy and let us know if you can help!

We can also find you a buddy if you need one.

Please send your details to Lisa: lisa_gizariotis@yahoo.com.au

Thank you!
