Letter from the Principal, Kelli Johnston

Introduction

Dear Families,

Congratulations to all our Squad swimmers that competed at the Dandenong Ranges Division on Friday 10th March. All swimmers did their best and there were some outstanding results.

Our 9/10 Boys Relay team of Archer, Patrick, Aiden and Henry came in 2nd Place.

The Girls Medley team achieved a great result of placing second too. Well done to Sophia, Ria, Ruby and Jenna.

The 9/10 Girls Relay also placed a gallant third with Jenna, Sophia, Thaaruni and Scarlett  performing to their best.

A few students were just touched out of a place. Archer was able to be our sole individual Regional qualifier when he finished 2nd in the 9/10 Boys breaststroke.

The next level of swimming will be the Eastern Metro Region event which will be held March 24th at Ringwood Aquanation.

We are enormously proud of the way you presented yourselves and St John the Baptist School. You were outstanding. Thank you to all participants and we look forward to seeing you back in 2024.

School Fire Drill

On Friday as a school we had our first Emergency Drill for the year. The students were terrific in the way everyone moved calmly, promptly and in an orderly manner in their two lines to the Evacuation Point on the school oval. As a school we hope that there will never be a need to enter into such a scenario, however, in the event that such a situation does occur we know that staff and students will be prepared and ready to respond. Well done to all!!

Sacrament of First Eucharist - Amended Date

In consultation with the Parish the Sacrament of First Eucharist will now be held on Saturday 17th June at 3:00pm.  This is an amendment to the previous date of Saturday 10th June which coincided with the King’s birthday long weekend.

St Patrick's Day - Friday March 17th

This Friday the Year 6 School Captains, SRC Leaders and Social Justice Leaders will represent St John the Baptist School at mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral. Mrs Marialisa Mandarino, REL and the leaders will travel by train to St Patrick’s Cathedral.  After mass they will enjoy listening to performances from a number of Catholic Schools. We wish Mrs Mandarino and the leaders a most enjoyable day out and we know they will represent St John the Baptist School brilliantly.

Students are invited to wear a splash of green on Friday for a gold coin donation to celebrate St Patrick’s Day. The funds raised will be donated to Caritas as part of Project Compassion. Students are to wear their regular school uniform with a splash of green.

Caritas Project Compassion

Caritas is the Catholic Church's international aid and development agency in Australia. They are committed to working alongside the most vulnerable. Project Compassion spans across the six weeks of Lent each year, bringing schools, parishes and supporters together to raise funds for people living in some of the most vulnerable communities across the world.  Our support contributes to changing lives today and for future generations.

NAPLAN

This week and next the Year 3 and Year 5 students will participate in NAPLAN.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9, and is the only nationwide assessment that all Australian children undertake.

It’s a measure to see whether or not young Australians are developing the literacy and numeracy skills that provide the critical foundation for other learning, and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community.

The NAPLAN assessment period will commence Wednesday 15th March and conclude Monday 27th March. The Year 3 and 5 students will commence their NAPLAN program with Writing, followed by Reading, Conventions of Language and then conclude with Numeracy.

We wish all students the best as they undertake the NAPLAN assessments.  We know that all students will try their very best in each of the NAPLAN assessments. Good luck everyone, we know you will be terrific.

Term 2 Curriculum Planning

In the coming weeks classroom levels will be released for Term 2 curriculum planning.  As a school we strongly value providing our students with quality Learning and Teaching. Providing quality Teaching and Learning opportunities requires a great deal of time, planning and consideration along with the opportunity for teachers to work collaboratively with one another.

We thank Ursula De Corrado for her work as Learning and Teaching and Literacy Leader in facilitating such days and Marialisa Mandarino for her facilitation in the area of Faith in Education. We are very fortunate to have a wealth of expertise in our leaders and teaching staff.

Parent Support Group (PSG) Meetings

As we approach the end of the term families will receive communication from Jo Stoica - Learning Diversity Leader, in relation to making time for a PSG meeting.  PSGs are an opportunity to review and reflect on the goals set in student Personalised Learning Plans for the term, to celebrate student growth and set goals for Term 2.

At St John the Baptist School we strongly value the partnerships developed at PSG Meetings dedicating time and the release of teachers through CRT employment to run such meetings.

We thank everyone involved for their commitment and partnership in supporting our students in their learning journeys.

Easter Raffle

As part of this year’s Lenten season almsgiving, we are asking each family to contribute an Easter Egg.  The Easter Eggs will then be bundled to create hampers in which families can purchase raffle tickets for and go into a draw to win. The Parents and Friends will then draw the raffle on Wednesday 5th April.  Please refer to P&F section for further information.

Child Safe Practices - Working with Children Checks

St John the Baptist School is committed to providing a child safe environment and takes active steps to ensure any person authorised to conduct ‘child connected works’ does not pose a risk to their safety or welfare. To achieve this, the school implements screening processes, including Working With Children Checks (WWCC), to assess and verify their suitability.

St John’s School ensures that non-teaching staff, contractors, volunteers and visitors are of suitable character and do not have a relevant criminal record that poses an unjustifiable risk to children.

Teaching Staff & Casual Relief Teachers who are registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) undergo criminal record checks via their annual registration.

Volunteering to Assist with School Programs- WWCC

Parents would be aware that to assist with any of our school programs that all volunteers, parents/guardians/family members are required to have a current Working With Children Check on our school records.

Family members are to provide a copy of the WWCC to the school office.

COVID-19 Settings for Term 1, 2023

Orders must be placed no later than 7.30am on the Wednesday or Friday.

Thank you to everyone for your patience at the start of the year as we transitioned from one supplier to another.  The supplier last year was unable to provide many items, so it was decided to find a new food service.  Some things will vary slightly or be no longer available.
