Newman Primary School

Newsletter: Term 3 Issue 1

Principal's Message

Welcome back to Term 3 and a big welcome to our new Newman PS families. It has been great to see students and staff returning after being away on holidays, with many families making the most of the opportunity to travel interstate and overseas. How excited we are to be back!

Mrs Kathryn Offer has joined us in an internal relief role and has already been guiding and working in many of the classes across the school. The impacts of COVID on staff and classrooms is still prevalent and we thank our school community for their support as we juggle teachers to ensure continuity of teaching and learning. It needs to be acknowledged what a wonderful job all of our staff are doing.

We have farewelled two of our amazing Education Assistants, Mrs Dawn Gray and Mrs Sarah Gumley, who have pursued other roles or returned to substantive positions. We wish them well and thank them for their valuable contribution to our school. We are currently undertaking recruitment processes to fill these, and other vacancies. If you know of someone in town who may be looking for Education Assistant work with school hours and school holiday leave, please encourage them to come and speak with us at the office.

I need to re-enforce the message that there are to be no dogs brought on to our school grounds. This includes if they are being carried or on a leash. Please consider our students welfare in this regard.

Please see below some of the things happening throughout the school and details for upcoming events and dates. What a busy term we have ahead! We are ready and raring to go in what is our Faction Sports term and really consolidate our regular teaching and learning.

Room 1 Year 3

At the beginning of this year, Newman Primary School transitioned to a new social-emotional wellbeing program – The Resilience Project. This program aims to support students develop their ability to regulate their emotions through the G.E.M values.

Through daily lessons, students explore their own emotions, their relationships with others and how they might act in certain situations. This week, Room 1’s “advertise me” activity focused on gratitude and positive self-talk. Many students can feel down about themselves and comparing yourself to others, but this activity allowed students to stop and reflect about what positive attributes and characteristics they have. For the next two weeks, come up to the office and view Room 1’s posters that are designed to advertise what makes each individual student’s unique strengths.

There are also many resources available for parents to access for use at home to support their child’s social and emotional journey.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019). Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes the year of schooling, category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional and the level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive. This information assists schools to formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools, consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools and develop shared practices so that they can review learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

Book Week 2022

Book Week this year will be celebrated from Monday 22 August to Friday 26 August 2022.

Newman Primary School would like to invite all students and parents to our two special events. A “whole school dress up parade” and a “Reading by Torchlight” event.

On Wednesday, 24 August all students from K – 6 are invited to dress up as their favourite book character. This year’s theme for Book Week is “Dreaming with Eyes Open”. We will be celebrating with all students participating in a book week parade, in the undercover area commencing at 8.20am. If your child does not formally attend Kindergarten on this day, they are still invited to dress up and join us for the parade. We will ensure they get to parade their costume. Parents will need to stay with your child and take them home at the conclusion of the parade.

Our Reading by Torchlight event will be held in the school grounds, in front of the under covered area on Thursday 25 August from 5.30 – 6.30pm. All families are asked to bring along a picnic rug, pillows, books that can be shared and read with your family members, torches, and don’t forget the family picnic snacks!

As the sun should be setting at approx. 5.47pm, this will be the time to bring out the torches. Reading by torchlight will give your child an opportunity to experience reading in a different, fun and exciting way and continue the development of reading for pleasure.
