Newsletter: Term 4 Issue 2

Principal's Message

Welcome to this Term 4 edition of our newsletter; doesn’t time fly! Our last assembly was hosted by Room 4 and what an awesome job they did presenting some wonderful messages from the Resilience project, particularly around bouncing back when thigs don’t go our way. Well done to all our award recipients, our students continue to do amazing things.

We were especially privileged this week to have so many of our students’ complete speeches to nominate for student leadership roles in 2023. Well done to all of those who overcame their nerves. I was particularly impressed with how all our students conducted themselves. The 2023 leadership team will be announced at our End of Year Concert in Week 9.

Key transition events have been happening in the school already for our Pre-Kindergarten students with Story Time. Over the next few weeks, our Pre-primary students will be introduced to the big playgrounds and eating areas and our Year 6s will have the opportunity to experience High School through out transition process.

We have a part time Network Administrator role coming soon. If this is a position you may be interested in and computers are your jam, please pop into the office to have a chat.

Hats

As our weather warms up and the UV index increases, it is particularly important that students come to school with their labelled school hat. Hats are required for sport and break times. No hat= shade play in our undercover areas. Due to hygiene issues we are unable to provide spare hats.

First thing in the Morning

All students from years 1- 6 are asked to drop their bag off at the classroom and move up to the undercover area for a play, chat with friends or just sit and watch. Supervision is provided every morning from 7.45am, students are then released at 8.00am to their classrooms which are opened to allow students to settle for the day. We have had several students arriving at the front gate from very early in the morning and we ask parents ensure students come closer to our opening time as there is no supervision before this time.

Crunch&Sip

We are a Crunch&Sip school, and this means that students can have a snack during the morning session. Participating in a daily in class Crunch&Sip break provides an opportunity for children to drink water and eat an extra serve of vegetables or fruit to support good health and to help with learning and concentration in the classroom. Crunch&Sip includes all fresh vegetables and fruit, vegetables and fruit canned in water with no added sugar and limited dried fruit. Plain water is always the go, and every student should have their own water bottle to fill from our chilled fillers. Let's hero healthy habits and remember to pack Crunch&Sip every day!

Planning for 2023

We are currently engaged in the planning process for 2023. Part of this planning needs to start with our potential class structures which are based on projected school numbers.

We are requesting that families inform the front office as soon as possible if they know that their children will not be returning to Newman Primary School in 2023. This will give us a more realistic idea of the number of students we need to cater for next year. It also assists with budgeting, as our school funding allocation is based upon student numbers.

The following are the guidelines around class sizes: Kindergarten - 20 students, Pre-primary - 27 students in a purpose-built centre, Year 1-3 - 24 students and Year 4-6 - 32 students.

If we have multi-age classes, this number generally drops by 1 or 2 students. Often parents believe that single stream classes are ‘better’, however multi age classes are just as good, with great teaching relationships and practice being the key to children’s schooling. It is important to realise that even in a class that is a single year group, the academic, social and emotional differences can be as diverse as a multi-age class.

If you are leaving town in the coming weeks or at the end of the year, please send in an email to newman.ps@education.wa.edu.au or contact our front office on 9154 3900. This information will greatly assist our planning for 2023.

2023 Student Placement Requests

If you believe your child has particular considerations regarding class placement for 2023 please contact Principal- Chris Sheridan directly by, letter or email at christopher.sheridan@education.wa.edu.au All requests will be treated with complete confidentiality and will be taken into consideration; however, there are no guarantees. In structuring classes there are many influencing factors that will be considered including friendships and class dynamics.

Requests received after Friday 25 November 2022 will not be able to be considered.
