Principal's Report

In the past two weeks the students and teachers of Kingswood PS have been at their finest! I am so proud and honoured to be leading such an amazing school. This year we celebrated Education Week with a range of exciting activities showcasing the abilities of our students in a range of areas. It was lovely to see so many parents and family members take time out to visit our classrooms and join in our STEM activities. I would like to thank our Education Week team led by Mrs Husarek and all of the teachers for working so hard to give our students the best possible learning experiences.

Once again this year our Book Fair was held on Open Day. Mrs Young and her team of helpers were extremely busy on the day, this year was our most successful Book Fair on record! Thank you to all of our students who purchased books on the day and to our parents for encouraging their children to develop a love for reading. An extra thank you to those families who have kindly donated a book from the Book Fair to our School Library.

Our Choir performed at the Joan Sutherland Centre during Education Week. Mrs Taylor went along to the performance and can not believe how fantastic the students sounded! Miss Jansen and Mrs Di Giglio have worked very hard all year with the choir and I would like to thank them for giving our students such a wonderful opportunity.

This week Miss Cleaver, Mrs Husarek, Mrs Taylor, Mrs Jeff and myself are all attending the Network of Inquiry and Innovation Annual Symposium. This year our teachers have been collaborating during our Spirals of Inquiry sessions on a fortnightly basis. We are looking forward to bringing back some new and exciting ideas from the Symposium to ensure the students at Kingswood PS are accessing the best opportunities for learning.

The NSW Department of Education have revised the enrolment policy and procedures for schools. An information brochure will be coming home in the next few days. Please take the time to read this important information as it will impact families who are out of our catchment area. If you have any questions about the new policy and procedures please contact the office and make a time to discuss your concerns with me.

We were very honoured to learn this week that our 2018 Stage 2 students who attended the Bush Trackers excursion have had their artwork incorporated into the new brochure promoting the Castlereagh Nature Reserve at Berkshire Park. A brochure is being distributed to all families and we have also scanned a copy into this newsletter for you to enjoy.

A heartfelt letter of appreciation and book arrived from the Principal at Tathra Public School thanking us for our donation and support after the bushfire that destroyed their school in March 2018.

I’m sure our students will appreciate reading the beautiful book created by Tathra students in Years 4, 5 and 6 – When the fire met the sea. Their book is a reflection of the events of last March and the days, weeks and months following the bush fire. Please click on the link to see the letter.

Personalised School Photo envelopes have been distributed and should be returned on photo day - Thursday 5 September. Please read all of the instructions on the order form so that orders can be processed smoothly. Sibling envelopes are available at the Office.

Our wonderful P&C has a signed Penrith Panthers NRL jersey to raffle. Flyers are being distributed to order tickets for the raffle and I would like to thank everyone for your continued support for the P&C fundraising efforts.

I would like to remind parents and families that the park across the road from our school should only be used by students after school if they are being directly supervised by an adult. We have had an increasing number of issues after school and the students who have been involved are unsupervised. It is also recommended that if you cannot pick your child up at 3pm that you consider our After School Care service to ensure that your children are safe.

Next week we celebrate Book Week. I am looking forward to seeing our students dressed as their favourite book characters.

Stage 2 (Year 3 & 4) and Stage 3 (Year 5 & 6) Reading Comprehension Workshop

Parents are invited to attend a Literacy Workshop “Comprehension … moving beyond” on Wednesday 21 August 2:00 – 3:00 p.m OR 5:30 p.m till 6:30 p.m. Our experienced teaching staff will guide you through current practices in supporting students in reading comprehension and explore how students learn.

We will share with you some of the tips and techniques to support your child with reading more complex text, developing a desire to read for pleasure and reading for subject specific tasks.

This workshop is open to all parents from Kindergarten to Year Six but is focusing on Stage 2, Stage 3 and transition to Stage 4 content.

So come along to learn how to best support your child to become a lifelong learner.

2019 Stage 1 Spelling Bee

Get ready for Kingswood Public School Stage 1 Spelling Bee.

The Premier’s Spelling Bee was introduced in 2004 as a fun and educational way for primary school students to engage with spelling. The program includes activities to encourage all students to engage with spelling and to promote improved literacy in combination with the English K-6 Syllabus.

The Stage 1 Spelling Bee will be held this term on Thursday, September 12 in the school hall. Two children from each class will be selected to be their representatives in the battle to find the best spellers in Stage 1.
